Background: Amyloidosis refers to a group of systemic and localized disorders associated with the accumulation of misfolded protein aggregates called amyloids in different parts of the body. Owing to the existence of multiple forms of amyloids with similar tertiary structures, precise identification of their biochemical form is critical for correct therapy. Objective: This retrospective study aimed to determine whether typing of oral amyloid deposits can help diagnose a serious systemic condition in the early phase of the disease Methods: All histopathologically confirmed cases of amyloidosis managed over a 14-year period (January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2011) were retrieved for analysis. Two board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists reviewed the histopathological findings of amyloidosis on the basis of its classic Congo red staining characteristics. This was followed by immunohistochemical analysis of biopsy samples using a panel of antibodies specific for different forms of amyloidosis. Results: The most common location of amyloidosis was the tongue, and women were more commonly affected than men. The patient age ranged from 11 to 83 years (average 59.3 years). In patient 9, light-chain and pre-albumin (transthyretin) antibodies were related to arthritis and senile amyloidosis, respectively. The biopsy sample of patient 10, who was reported to have multiple myeloma, was positive for light chains and β2 microglobulin. All other samples exhibited localized (solitary) amyloidosis. Conclusion: Histological analysis coupled with immunostaining with a panel of specific antibodies might assist in identifying early systemic amyloidosis in patients with localized oral forms of the disease.

ABSTRACTWe report a case involving a 45-year-old woman, who presented with an axillary mass 10 years after bilateral cosmetic augmentation mammaplasty. A lump was detected in the left axilla, and subsequent mammography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated intracapsular rupture of the left breast prosthesis. An excisional biopsy of the left axillary lesion and replacement of the ruptured implant was performed. Histological analysis showed that the axillary lump was lymph nodes containing large amounts of silicone. Silicone lymphadenopathy is an obscure complication of procedures involving the use of silicone. It is thought to occur following the transit of silicone droplets from breast implants to lymph nodes by macrophages and should always be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients in whom silicone prostheses are present.

Summary Objectives: To report on a new surgical approach to scapular neck fractures. Methods: A combined prospective and retrospective study of eight dogs that had sustained a fracture of the scapular neck between 1992 and 2005 was performed. All eight dogs had an internal fixation using a T plate through a muscle separation approach. Retraction of the supraspinatus from the deltoideus and infraspinatus allows an adequate surgical window to enable plating of the scapular neck. Results: Sixty-two percent had an excellent outcome without any lameness or stiffness detected. The remaining cases experienced infrequent bouts of stiffness, or, in one case lameness. Clinical significance: The current literature recommends that the surgical approach to the scapular neck is by osteotomy of the acromion process, which is unnecessary in the authors’ opinion as it increases surgical trauma, operating time and the number of implants required.

Abstract BackgroundCarbofuran was a widely used board-spectrum pesticide, which despite his strict regulation and bans for more than one decade is still encountered in cases of intentional poisoning in dogs and wildlife. The objective of the study was to provide a complete and detailed description of the pathological, histological and toxicological findings of the 7 cases of intentional carbofuran poisoning in dogs. ResultsIn this retrospective study 7 case of carbofuran intoxication recorded from July 2015 to June 2017 were analyzed. Following complete history recording, all cases were examined by complete necropsy and histopathology. The carbofuran intoxication was confirmed in all cases by gas-chromatography. The postmortem examination revealed extensive haemorrhages and congestion located mainly within the respiratory, nervous and cardiovascular systems, accompanied by degeneration and necrosis within the lung, heart and kidneys.ConclusionsNowadays in the European Union, carbamate poisoning is a rarely reported entity. Although banned in the EU, carbofuran is still used in Romania for crop protection and poisoning cases are encountered in animals, and it can be purchased. This paper will contribute to a better understanding of occurrence and pathogenesis in cases of acute carbofuran exposure in dogs and add some necropsy and histopathology data to current literature.

SummaryThis retrospective study concerning 102 patients was undertaken to study the therapeutic decisions in these patients when they presented with symptoms of cerebral vascular insufficiency, mostly from the territory of the carotid artery, either transient or accompanied by a deficit. The current literature on the subject is also mentioned. The clinical outcome with regard to the quality of life, seems to have been better in patients who were subjected to carotid endar terectomies than in those who received medical treatment.

Background and objectives We conducted this preliminary retrospective study to assess the short-term safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants (SGBIs) that are commercially available in Korean women. Materials and methods The current retrospective, observational study was conducted in a total of 2612 patients (n =2612) who underwent augmentation mammaplasty using breast implants at our hospitals between 1 January, 2017 and 31 August 2021. Results Overall, there were a total of 248 cases (9.49%) of postoperative complications; these include 112 cases of early seroma, 52 cases of shape deformation, 32 cases of CC, 12 cases of early hematoma, 12 cases of rupture, 12 cases of infection, 12 cases of stretch deformities with skin excess and 4 cases of rippling. Overall complication-free survival of the breast implant was estimated at 1564.32 ± 75.52 days (95% CI 1416.39–1712.32). Then, the Motiva Ergonomix™SilkSurface showed the longest survival (1528.00 ± 157.92 days [95% CI 1218.48–1837.56]), followed by the BellaGelÒSmoothFine (1458.4 ± 65.76 days [95% CI 1329.56–1587.28]), the SebbinÒ Sublimity (1322.00 ± 51.20 days [95% CI 1221.64–1422.32]), the BellaGelÒ Smooth (1138.72 ± 161.28 days [95% CI 822.6–1454.84), the MentorÒ MemoryGel™ Xtra (698.4 ± 52.64 days [95% CI 595.28–801.52]) and the NatrelleÒ INSPIRA™ (380.00 ± 170.88 days [95% CI 45.04–714.96]) in the decreasing order. On subgroup analysis, both the Motiva ErgonomixTM and MentorÒ MemoryGel™ Xtra showed no postoperative complications. However, the BellaGelÒSmoothFine, SebbinÒ Sublimity and BellaGelÒ Smooth showed incidences of 8.87%, 4.84% and 1.61%, respectively. A subgroup analysis also showed differences in incidences of postoperative complications between microtextured and smooth breast implants (15.18% vs. 16.67%). Conclusions In conclusion, our results indicate that diverse types of an SGBI are commercially available and their safety profile varies according to the manufacturer. Plastic surgeons should consider the safety profile of each device in selecting the optimal types of the device for Korean women who are in need of an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty. However, this warrants a single-surgeon, single-center studywith long periods of follow-up.
