Business process modeling aims to construct digital representations of processes being executed in the company. However, models derived from the event logs of their execution tend to overcomplicate the desired representation, making them difficult to apply. The most accurate recovery of the business process model requires a comprehensive study of the various artifacts stored in the company’s information system. This paper, however, aims to explore the possibility to automatically obtain the most accurate model of business process, using mutual optimization of models recovered from a set of event logs. Further, the obtained models are executed in multi-agent simulation model of company, and the resulting event logs are examined to determine patterns that are specific to distinct employees and those that generally characterize business process.

In business process models, elements can be scattered (repeated) within different processes, making it difficult to handle changes, analyze process for improvements, or check crosscutting impacts. These scattered elements are named as Aspects. Similar to the aspect-oriented paradigm in programming languages, in BPM, aspect handling has the goal to modularize the crosscutting concerns spread across the models. This process modularization facilitates the management of the process (reuse, maintenance and understanding). The current approaches for aspect identification are made manually; thus, resulting in the problem of subjectivity and lack of systematization. This paper proposes a method to automatically identify aspects in business process from its event logs. The method is based on mining techniques and it aims to solve the problem of the subjectivity identification made by specialists. The initial results from a preliminary evaluation showed evidences that the method identified correctly the aspects present in the process model.

In recent years, business process modeling has increasingly drawn the attention of enterprises. As a result of the wide use of business processes, redundancy problems have arisen and researchers introduced the variability management, in order to enhance the business process reuse. The most approach used in this context is the Configurable Process Model solution, which consists in representing the variable and the fixed parts together in a unique model. Due to the increasing number of variants, the configurable models become complex and incomprehensible, and their quality is therefore impacted. Most of research work is limited to the syntactic quality of process variants. The approach presented in this paper aims at providing a novel method towards syntactic verification and semantic validation of configurable process models based on ontology languages. We define validation rules for assessing the quality of configurable process models. An example in the e-healthcare domain illustrates the main steps of our approach.

Formal models of business processes are used for a variety of purposes. But where the elicitation of the characteristics of a business process usually takes place in a collaborative fashion, the building of the final, formal process model is done mostly by a single person. This article presents the design and Implementation of a Recommendation-Based Process Modeling Support System with ‘social features.’ A process builder using this system will receive recommendations to complete or edit a formal business process model on the basis of previous usage of modeling fragments by her peers. Such features potentially Improve the modeling process and, as such, the modeling outcome, that is, the quality of the process model. This article also contains an evaluation of the system's usage and effectiveness, which builds on an experimental design. It is shown that process builders are inclined to follow up on the provided recommendations and that this will improve the semantical quality of the created model. However, Information on peer usage of modeling fragments does not play a big role in selecting the recommendations being followed up. This article fits within a stream of research that puts emphasis on the modeling process, rather than on the model artifact.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a representation scheme based on the i* strategic actor model to represent the process owner information and show how to incorporate this approach into the event driven process chain and Business Process Modeling Notation-BPMN meta-models and also into the aspect-oriented business process modeling (BPM) context. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use a case study in a real setting to evaluate the proposal and a controlled experiment to get more evidence about its relevance. Findings – The authors presented evidence both from a case study in a real-world library showing the importance of representing – previously unavailable – process owner information, and from an experiment which involved participants analyzing the same models of the case study, confirming the preliminary evidences. It is important to stress the recognition that the proposed representation provided more transparency, in terms of ownership, than the usual BPM models. These benefits are due to the combination of the aspect-oriented approach and the strategic actor model, providing ownership information in a more transparent way. Originality/value – The authors not only argue the importance of clearly established process ownership, both of the core process and the aspectual process, but also the authors presented an approach to represent the actor involved in process and aspect ownership as an instantiation of the i* strategic actor. Using this approach, the process owner can be defined in terms of actors instead of the activities performed. It is also possible to define the aspect owner and to include the aspectual process concept in the business process model.

Abstract One of the key purposes of Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is to support graphical representation of the process model. However, such models have a lack of support for the graphical representation of resources, whose processes are used during simulation or execution of process instance. The paper analyzes different methods and their extensions for resource modeling. Further, this article presents a selected set of resource properties that are relevant for resource modeling. The paper proposes an approach that explains how to use the selected set of resource properties for extension of process modeling using BPMN and simulation tools. They are based on BPMN, where business process instances use resources in a concurrency manner.

Through the analysis of the execution and dispatching principle of the Petri net, the business process management mode based on Petri net is proposed. We merge the place node and the transition node, and reside the token in the node. The only token in process instances and the sub-token in parallel process are introduced, which can avoid conflicts caused by multi-tokens. The business process model for the drawings design and approval is established, and it is verified by the workflow modeling system.

In order to develop the process-oriented software, we put forward hierarchical colored Petri net (HCPN) to model business process. This approach consists of hierarchical decomposition graph, detailed process graph. Furthermore, the concept of business process components (BPCs) is proposed to facility the business process modeling. The software components, which are constructs of the information system, can be derived by means of the mapping from the relevant business process components. The development of business process-oriented application will be more convenient and rapid based on component library. Such an application becomes more flexible to the changing environment.

With the rapid development of economic globalization and informationization, the Chinese e-government is still in its adolescence with a long way ahead. Based on some recent research in Guangdong province, we find that e-government affair systems play important roles therein and represent a certain kind of application called Form-centered Application Systems (FAS). After much investigation and analysis on e-government's background, daily routine and regulations, we summarize some rules and disciplines of its business process modeling, based on which we characterize requirements of FAS. Though currently many process modeling approaches or techniques have been proposed and widely used, they can not fully and easily meet the special needs. In this paper, we introduce a new business process model called Double-State Based Business Process Description Model (DSBPDM), which is composed of Business Process Model (BPM) and Dispatching Model (DM), where BPM enriches Finite State Machine (FSM) Model by three constraint checks, business logic and message passing, whereas DM delineates the dispatching and executing status of the business object in its lifetime. After presenting DSBPDM's formal definition, we discuss the essence of process forwarding by deducing its operational semantics formally. In this way, key issues such as explicit state and operation representation, rigorous constraint expression, complex authorization check, and full picture of the dispatching and executing of business objects are nicely tackled. Our practice shows that building FAS system with DSBPDM and its supporting platform fits the requirements well, provides an open and transparent view of business process, satisfies the needs of the public and officials, and helps to get a comprehensive insight into the meaning of business process forwarding.

BPMN has become the standard of business process modeling indescribing the existing series of business process. By engaging BPMN, an analystwould possibly able to model the whole business process activities in whichhe/she may analyze business process upon design time. It can be done byanalyzing the structure, behavior, or semantic of process model. In certaincondition one may ask a question what would the effects of the process be if itwere to be executed up to this point?. However, it cannot be solved with onlygraphical notation, but with its semantics. In practice, several modeling tools stilldo not provide a feature for managing information regarding the effects/resultsin the business process model. In fact, analysts should be supported with a toolin order to semantically enrich a process model with its effects. This articledescribes effect annotation semantically towards activity in the BPMN modelincluding the rules in representing its effects. The effect annotation will be suitedtowards activity type (atomic and compound activities). The outcomes of plugin development of eclipse BPMN2 modeler for representing semantic effect arealso described in this paper.

Semantic Business Process Management (SBPM) bridges the gap between business and IT by taking advantage of the Semantic Web technologies. The foundation for SBPM is the detailed ontological description of enterprise models. These models encompass also business processes taking place in enterprises. Within this chapter, we show how the process-oriented knowledge may be captured for the needs of SBPM. For this reason, we describe semantically enhanced Business Process Modeling Notation (sBPMN) being a conceptualization of one of the main process modeling notations with the fast growing popularity among the tool vendors, namely BPMN. The sBPMN ontology is based on the BPMN specification and may be used as a serialization format by the BPMN modeling tools, thus, making creation of annotations invisible to users. In this chapter, we also present an example of a process model description.
