Introduction. Growing volumes of road construction increase the need to expand and rationally use of raw materials. The need for stone materials can be solved through the wide spread using of local materials, recycled products of industry in the pavement base courses and decreasing the use of natural construction materials by replacing them with alternatives, including soils, slag materials that are metallurgical industry wastes. Experience of ferrous metallurgy slag usage has been accumulated in the road industry of Ukraine. Their usage makes it possible to extend the construction season, increases the strength and reliability of road structures due to their physical and mechanical properties, significantly reduces the road pavement energy consumption, simplifying the technology of works and the estimated cost of road construction. It was determined that the layers of pavement made from blast furnace slag have a high bearing capacity. Slag structures in 5–10 years of hardening are not inferior to, and in 10–20 years surpass cement structures on durability and deformation resistance. However, there is an urgent need to provide strength and open road traffic on the already built road section in a shortest possible term, so there is a need to accelerate the activation of the slow-setting binder. Therefore water glass (water solution of sodium silicate) is used.Purpose. The purpose of the work is to study the feasibility of using the soils and recycled industry products treated with water glass in the road pavement base courses.Materials and methods. Experimental tests of soils and blast furnace slags treated with water glass with different content of water solution of sodium silicate were performed.Results. The feasibility of using the asphalt concrete mixtures on the basis of soils and recycled products of industry treated with water glass in the pavement base courses is determined. Recommendations regarding technological parameters of preparation, transportation, laying and compaction of such mixes are given.Conclusions. Performed studies have shown that the physical and mechanical parameters of soils and blast furnace slags treated with water glass meet the requirements of current regulations of Ukraine. The advantages of use are noted, namely: the possibility of replacement of traditional stone materials by the local materials and recycled products of industry, reducing the transport component in the cost of construction. The obtained results indicate the feasibility of using the soils and recycled products of industry treated with water glass in the road construction.Keywords: soils, recycled products of industry, graded blast furnace slag, water solution of sodium silicate, water glass

An estimation of the possibility of dehydration of sludge-lignin of the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill by the freeze-thaw method was carried out. Change of sludge-lignin structure, physicochemical properties and chemical composition after freeze-thaw are shown. Toxicity and chemical composition of the water solution separated from the sludge-lignin during its freeze-thaw is estimated. An increase in the rate of germination of seeds of the cress in the soil with the addition of the frozen-out sludge-lignin in the ratio "sludge-lignin-soil" 1:3-1:4 is shown. Possibility of application and recommendations for the use of freezed out sludge-lignin as an organic fertilizer is considered. Principal possibility of the worm transformation of sludge-lignin, previously dehydrated by the freeze-thaw method, by red Californian worms Eisenia foetida Andrei Bouche (1972) is shown. The issue of prospects for processing this waste in a fertile bio-soil is discussed. The latter can later be used for recultivation of the territory of the sludge accumulator plots of the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill.

A method for production a new fertilizer was proposed. This method is based on the impregnation of a substrate from pine bark with a water solution of ammonium nitrate, and containing 20.0 wt. % nitrogen. The physicochemical properties of a pine bark substrate and prepared fertilizers were studied. A field experiment was conducted on growing wheat of the variety “Krasnoyarskaya 12”. The yield of wheat when fertilized with pine bark was applied to the soil increased by 2.9 centners/ha compared to blank experiment without fertilizer. The use of this fertilizer results in an increase in the quality (higher nutritional value) of the grains in comparison blank experiments with ammonium nitrate and without fertilizer

The aim of this study was to determine how well calcium-rich mineral extracts derived from blue whiting fish bone powders compare with existing calcium sources (commercially available fish bone supplement, calcium carbonate and milk powder) in terms of physicochemical properties, in vitro bioaccessibility and bioavailability using simulated gastrointestinal tract treatment and a Caco-2 cell culture model. Blue whiting calcium-rich fish bone powders (A to E) were supplied by Bio-marine Ingredients Ireland (BII) and a commercial calcium-rich fish bone powder was used as the positive control F. The BII calcium-rich fish bone powders analysed through atomic emission spectrometry were shown to have similar levels of mineral content in comparison with powder F. Solubility and rheology tests were performed on the rehydrated powders. The pH of BII calcium-rich fish bone powders in water solution (10% w/v) ranged from 6.96 to 9.09 compared to control F (pH 7.33). Following simulated oral, gastric and duodenal in vitro digestion using the COST INFOGEST standardised static adult digestion method, the fish powders A, E and F showed higher values of soluble ionic calcium than rehydrated milk powder. We compared in vitro bioavailability of the powders using the Caco-2 cell line to test the effects of calcium on human colonic epithelial cells, which confirmed that calcium from blue whiting fish bone was more bioavailable than calcium from milk and calcium carbonate. These data indicate that calcium-rich blue whiting fish bone powder compares well with existing calcium sources, in terms of physicochemical properties, bioaccessibility and bioavailability.

Magnetofection is a nanoparticle-mediated approach for transfection of cells, tissues, and tumors. Specific interest is in using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) as delivery system of therapeutic genes. Magnetofection has already been described in some proof-of-principle studies; however, fine tuning of the synthesis of SPIONs is necessary for its broader application. Physicochemical properties of SPIONs, synthesized by the co-precipitation in an alkaline aqueous medium, were tested after varying different parameters of the synthesis procedure. The storage time of iron(II) sulfate salt, the type of purified water, and the synthesis temperature did not affect physicochemical properties of SPIONs. Also, varying the parameters of the synthesis procedure did not influence magnetofection efficacy. However, for the pronounced gene expression encoded by plasmid DNA it was crucial to functionalize poly(acrylic) acid-stabilized SPIONs (SPIONs-PAA) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) without the adjustment of its elementary alkaline pH water solution to the physiological pH. In conclusion, the co-precipitation of iron(II) and iron(III) sulfate salts with subsequent PAA stabilization, PEI functionalization, and plasmid DNA binding is a robust method resulting in a reproducible and efficient magnetofection. To achieve high gene expression is important, however, the pH of PEI water solution for SPIONs-PAA functionalization, which should be in the alkaline range.
