Rodion Shchedrin's choral work represents the most interesting area of modern musical culture. The object of the analysis is the composition "Epigraph by Count Tolstoy to His Novel "Anna Karenina" for mixed choir a cappella as a demonstration of the key feature of Rodion Shchedrin's compositional style — polyphonic thinking. This aspect becomes an argument for the relevance of the topic. Through the synthesis of research methods, the parameters of musical composition are studied: literary source, musical form, texture, and melody. In addition, the author reveals the "Russian theme" in the choral work of R. Shchedrin, identifies the specifics of the composer's individual choral style, and defines the aspects of polyphonization of the means of musical language. The "Epigraph" explains the main idea of L. Tolstoy's novel and concentrates on the most important contextual continuum development of all the events that take place. A wide semantic field of textual basis becomes an impulse for polyphonization of all musical expressive means. Polyphony as an idiom of R. Shchedrin's composer's handwriting is born, among other things, in the fusion of artistic trends and styles. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the literary basis of the "Epigraph", woven from historical, theological, philosophical, artistic and poetic layers, required a synthesis of traditional and innovative musical expressive means — "a new polyphonic word" in the author's expression of the main paradigms of the Russian theme by R. Shchedrin.

Debates concerning the appropriate nature of sacred music in France persisted throughout the nineteenth century. While many figures within the Catholic Church took the more traditional stance in their proclamation of plainchant as the genre of sacred music par excellence, other priests and church musicians insisted that more modern styles of composition were not only appropriate but necessary for French Catholics. This debate was not limited to the confines of the Church: Republican composers, for their part, also contributed their views on the matter, which largely stated that the realms of sacred and secular were not mutually exclusive. This chapter outlines the debate on both sides in order to reveal how Republican composers absorbed the numerous criteria involved in the composition of sacred music into their secular constructions of French music. It also reveals the discursive slippages between Catholic denigrations of “modern” religious music and “secular” compositional styles: more often than not, modern religious music was strikingly close to the Catholic ideal, even when it was written by a decidedly secular composer for non-liturgical use. A study of Contes mystiques, a collection of twelve mélodies written by such composers as Gabriel Fauré, Théodore Dubois, Henri Maréchal, and Pauline Viardot, reveals how Republican composers absorbed the numerous criteria involved in the composition of sacred music and how this modern music was strikingly similar to the Catholic ideal, even when written by “secular” composers for non-liturgical use.

The article investigates theoretical approaches to the essence of the concept of ‘methodology’ in modern jurisprudence based on the analysis of the views of domestic and foreign scientific researchers. It is proposed under the methodology to understand the set of methods, means, principles and procedures of scientific research, used in the process of scientific knowledge of a particular problem, with the help of which the researcher substantiates the phenomenon under investigation. It is determined that the development of modern legal science requires a well-formed research methodology, since the term ‘methodology’ is often changed with the term ‘methods/ technique’. It is established that there are different and not always unambiguous interpretations of the concept of methodology in the modern world and they are provoked by the rapid globalization development of society, the introduction of new information resources, digitalization, etc. The basic categories on which the methodology is based, which is endowed with a certain apparatus of research, which include: methods and ways of organizing scientific research; principles and forms of organization of scientific research; techniques and procedures of scientific research. It is substantiated that all the components of scientific research constitute the foundation of methodological apparatus and collectively make up a certain tool for the knowledge of the phenomena and processes under study. The significance and difference of the concepts of ‘scientific method’ and ‘method of science’ have been considered and the main requirements for these concepts have been characterized. It is determined that the right choice of research methods will lead the scientist to deep and verified results, provided that these methods will be used together with another elements of scientific research in order to solve certain problems. It was revealed that there are a considerable number of methods, the unity and interrelation of which form the specificity and integrity of the cognitive activity in science, the determining of which are general scientific, theoretical, experimental and specific. The key principles on which the methodology of scientific research should be formed are specified, i.e. the principle of consistency, the principle of development, the principle of unity of theory and practice, the principle of objectivity, the principle of abstraction, the principle of decomposition. The main functions the methodology is based on are characterized. It is defined that modern scientific research is impossible without a clearly formed methodology, which should have a systemic nature in scientific research and be carried out in certain logical sequences.

Support of scientific research as a field of activity is one of the leading topics discussed in the professional library, especially foreign, periodicals. In 2020, there was conducted the analysis of research support services provided by research libraries of domestic and foreign universities. Based on the experience of the 2017’ study, the authors divided all research support services into two groups for the analysis of 2020: information and library services and general scientific services. Information and library services include all those that the library traditionally provides to its readers and users, taking into account the development of modern information technologies. General scientific services are essentially a certain continuation of the work with information that researchers have already received in the course of their work. For the analysis of research universities, the authors selected Russian universities that were included in the Shanghai ranking of world universities for 2020 (there are nine of them), followed by the same number of foreign universities. Comparison of the results of the 2017’ and 2020’ studies showed that university libraries have found stable, relevant directions and forms of communication with scientists. They can be grouped as follows: preparation and maintenance of special resources that are a priori useful to researchers for obtaining information necessary for conducting, promoting and organizing scientific research; assistance in preparing publications; assistance in using tools for scientific communication; assistance in working with research data; assistance in working with scientometric data; comprehensive support for scientific research. The article indicates that the core of this area of library and information activity has been formed over the past four years. The only significant difference in the activities of research libraries of foreign and domestic universities is that the latter do not offer data management services. The authors draw attention to the appearance in library activities of such type of services as “help”/assistance on the websites of libraries of domestic and foreign universities. The authors propose to consider it in the “help — consulting — support” paradigm, which reflects the competence level of the librarian.

The work of the Russian composer Sergei Ivanovich Sirotin (1941–2014) occupies a unique niche in modern music. However, there is not much information either about the composer or about his choral work. The article focuses on Sirotin's poem "The Death of Ivan the Terrible" written for a mixed choir. The essay chosen for research clarifies the degree of reflection of the aesthetic categories of the tragic and the comic. The author analyzes the artistic images through the prism of these categories. Special attention is paid both to the identification of the tragic beginning in plot collisions of the work and its images, and to the comic in its various forms. The choral poem presents elements of folk laughter culture (parody, grotesque), as well as a character that performs a carnival and ritual function. In conclusion, the author states that the images embodied in the poem are the bearers of both tragic and satirical tragic elements, and indicates the features of musical characteristics that contribute to their expression in artistic images. It is argued that at the conceptual level of the work, the tragic and satirical tragic beginnings are opposed to each other.

Non multa, sed multum. How happy I would be, could this saying be applied here!” With these words, Anton Webern dedicated the score of his Op. 9, the six Bagatelles for string quartet, to his friend Alban Berg. Each of these pieces, though lasting only a few seconds, contains a truly remarkable wealth of musical expression. But this old Latin adage may also very suitably be applied to the whole of Webern's work. The published list commences with a large composition for orchestra, the Passacaglia Op. 1 (1908), written after a long and strict study with Arnold Schönberg. It shows the twenty-five-year-old composer in complete command of all the traditional means of his art. Even this work, clearly influenced by Brahms's late style, betrays a peculiar originality, wrestling for its own means of expression in its melodic invention and its endeavour to expand tonality to the uttermost. Also the next work, a double Canon for mixed choir a cappella to words by Stefan George, strives for a certain conciliation between conventional ways of writing and the new presentation of a clearly conceived tone-world. The early tendency to marshal and arrange even the boldest and freest musical thoughts by orthodox musical form-laws (passacaglia, canon), remains characteristic also of Webern's latest compositions.
