Arapaima Arapaima gigas, also known as paiche and pirarucu, is a large South American freshwater fish with unique biology, favorable aquaculture characteristics, and potential for production in south Florida. This publication provides Arapaima gigas biology, specific culture methods known for each stage of development, and information about diseases and parasites, markets, and the laws associated with this species to potential Florida producers.

Abstract Lighvan cheese (Lighvan panir) is among the most famous traditional cheese in Iran for its desired aroma and flavor. Undoubtedly, the lactic acid bacteria especially the genus Lactobacillus are the critical factors in developing the aroma, flavor, and texture in Lighvan cheese. In this study, the Lactobacillus population of the main Lighvan cheese was investigated. The Lactobacillus of the main Lighvan cheese was isolated using specific culture methods according to previously published Guidelines. Then, the phylogenetic features were investigated and the phenotypic characteristics were examined using specific culture methods. Twenty-eight Gram-positive bacterial species were identified belonged to the genus Lactobacillus. According to the same sequences as each other, three groups (A, B, and C) of isolates were categorized with a high degree of similarity to L. fermentum (100%) and L. casei group (L. casei, L. paracasei, and L. rhamnosus) (99.0 to 100%). Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprint analysis manifested the presence of three clusters that were dominant in traditional Lighvan cheese. Cluster І was divided into 4 sub-clusters. By the result of carbohydrate fermentation pattern and 16S rRNA sequencing, isolates were identified as L. rhamnosus. The isolates in clusters II and III represented L. paracasei and L. fermentum, respectively as they were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and fermented carbohydrate patterns. Our result indicated that the specific aroma and flavor of traditional Lighvan cheese can be related to its Lactobacillus population including L. fermentum, L. casei, L. paracasei, and L. rhamnosus. Background: Sabalan (Savalan) Lake is a stable crater lake locating at the summit of Sabalan, an inactive stratovolcano and the third highest mountain of Iran. Because of cold weather conditions, the lake is frozen in most months of the year. The biodiversity of microbial flora in this area needs to be explored to find its similarity with the arctic regions’ biodiversity. Objective: The psychrophilic bacterial population of Sabalan (Savalan) Crater Lake was identified. The current research is the first report of aquatic bacterial strains isolation and characterization from Sabalan Lake. Methods: Water sample collections were cultured on four different media, then colonies were isolated by the plating method. The phylogenetic features of the isolates were scrutinized and finally, the phenotypic characteristics were investigated using specific culture methods. Results: The results of morphological tests indicated that most isolates were Gram-negative and rod shape, which were able to grow between ˗4 and +37 ºC.‎ According to the phylogenetic analysis the isolated strains belong to Pseudomonas, Yersinia, Kocuria, and Micrococcus genera and about 60% of the isolates belong to the various species of Pseudomonas as a ‎dominant genus with abounded frequency. ‎In addition, several isolates showed 99% similarity with bacteria, which were previously isolated from Antarctic regions such as Pseudomonas antarctica and Micrococcus antarctica. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the microbial populations of cold areas is the same across the geographical distances. In addition, these bacterial strains could be a primitive source of new enzymes for technological applications such as biosurfactant production.

Marsupial females show preferential paternal X-inactivation. However, the time at which X-inactivation occurs in early development has not yet been determined. A double microassay which measures the activities of X-linked hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) and the autosomally-coded adenine phosphoribosyl transferase (APRT) from the same sample was performed on a collection of embryos from a South American opossum Monodelphis domestica. The embryos ranged in age from the 2-cell stage to the bilaminar blastocyst stage. The results indicate that their embryonic HPRT and APRT are not expressed until just before the unilaminar blastocyst stage in M. domestica. This is at a later stage of development than that in the mouse where embryonic HPRT and APRT expression first occurs at the 4-8-cell stage. It is concluded that HPRT is an uniformative enzyme for assessing X chromosome activity in cleaving embryos of M. domestica. The widespread distribution of HPRT:APRT ratios after the unilaminar blastocyst stage also makes it difficult to draw conclusions about the state of X chromosome activity in early marsupial development.

As far back as the New Deal era, South Florida’s white power brokers wanted African Americans to live in the northwest section of then Dade County and away from the region’s lucrative seaside. Even today, however, people of color, many of Bahamian descent, remain in Miami’s bayside Coconut Grove community, but they do so amid gentrification and wealthy South American neighbors. Such ongoing settlement and the eventual migration of people of African descent to the northwest section of the county by the late 1960s fit into a larger narrative of black self-determination in Florida. This article explores such settlement and migratory patterns and how they fit into a larger black resistance tradition dating back to the nineteenth century.
