Cross-cultural competence as an approach in this paper enables Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to work or respond effectively across cultures in ways that the values, beliefs, traditions, and customs are recognized. This study uses Jaccarino & Kendall (2004) empirical model to understand the cross-cultural competence process in an organization. The model consists of four elements: cultural awareness, skill development, development planning, and organization strategy. Moreover, this paper explores the roles of cross-cultural competence on the MSMEs internationalization process.

The model consists of four elements: cultural awareness, skill development, developmental planning, and organization strategy. Moreover, this paper explores similarities and differences that exists and the business implications that results from cultural competence variations. Null hypothesis 1 covers the comparison between international subsidiaries by stating that there are no differences in cultural competence between two subsidiaries (United States and Mexico) of an international firm once they operate under unified directives. Null hypothesis 2 covers the comparison within each subsidiary by stating that there are no differences in cultural competence between administrators and direct service providers/clerks in each subsidiary (United States and Mexico) of an international firm.

The paper deals with evaluating the success of small and medium-sized companies in in­ter­na­tio­na­li­za­tion process. The process of internationalization is defined in the literature in a many ways; there is a countless variety of different approaches and models of internationalization process of firms. Like all processes in the firm also the internationalization process is accompanied by risks. For risk management it is important to know what the key factors of success are in the international arena. In this article is presented a simple evaluation model that could be used by SMEs to determine not only how strong are they compared to competitors, but also at what level are their key success factors in the process of internationalization. The aim was to find a simple method to help small and medium enterprises to assess their situation in the field of internationalization and to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses in this area. Proposed simple evaluation model has the graphic output from which it can be seen in which areas the company is doing well in internationalization process and in what areas is doing badly – then there is room for further improvement. Creating the model it was essential to divide the various factors into several groups and further evaluation to determine the range by which SMEs can quantify the level of success in internationalization process. Before the model was constructed it was necessary to collect data among small and mid-sized firms, and to process the outputs of the survey. After confirmation or to rejection of the certain hypotheses key success factors of SMEs in the internationalization process were selected and these factors were then aggregated into 4 groups. The model was then applied to data obtained from a survey of 40 SMEs and in the paper there are presented specific examples of graphical output of the model for the best and worst rated company. Authors are aware that the model is simple and has its limits, there is the need of much more work and the authors foresee further modifications of this model.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the internationalization strategies of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the interaction between network ties and “soft” internal resources at the foundation of knowledge management (KM). Specifically, it identifies the firms’ internal capabilities that affect KM strategies, and their collective influence on the degree of internationalization; verifies the influence of network ties on the internationalization process itself; and develops a conceptual “preliminary theoretical framework of SME internationalization capabilities and networks.” Design/methodology/approach The primary research and analysis are based on a proportional stratified sample of Sicilian wineries; while the conceptual and implicative developments of the paper rest on the combination of the theoretical with the primary findings of the research, and, it has been designed and tested through eight experts’ interviews/reviews. Findings Findings underline a strong influence of the internal capabilities of firms on the internationalization process. In addition, an important role in the export process emerges from the acquisition of information and knowledge through the establishment of networks. Research limitations/implications The results need to be interpreted within the context for which this study was designed and cannot be applied generally to all businesses. However, results allow cellars’ managers to better understand the relationships among the influencing factors of SMEs internationalization. Originality/value The originality of the paper lies not only in its above-stated explicit theoretical objectives and findings but also in its comprehensive conceptual framework that theoretically incorporates the “strategic” with the “internal” and “networking” aspects; purposefully also arming the industry with a practicable tool toward managerial implementation.


The purpose of this paper is to study whether business incubation can contribute to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) internationalization. As the main objective of BI is to increase the survival of new firms, to achieve this goal they need to support them in foreign trade for their rational growth and development which will make them to succeed in their contribution of entrepreneurship development. In this globalized environment, it is becoming necessary to do business worldwide especially, to protect the firms from resource adequacy. In this study, we analysed few empirical research related to SME internationalization with a perspective to identify the available antecedents and outcomes which would make the enterprises beneficial as well as to become sustainable in the market. While, many past studies have measured the services of incubation with various factors like network, social capital, firm’s performance, funding, human resource, etc., there are very few studies that has looked into the process of internationalization of incubated firms. Hence, there is a need for review of literature in this context, to find out the consequences of BI towards internationalization and the survival of the SMEs, which is its ultimate goal. It is also useful for the researchers to build a framework with respect to the measurement of business incubation internationalization process. Finally, this review fills the existing gap in the field of internationalization of SME under business incubation

Cross-cultural communication in the context of competence and educational system is the major focus in this project. The paper concerns the issue of cross-cultural communication in the sphere of university education in the EL classroom. Special attention is given to the problems of innovation potential of different methods and models for the formation of cross-cultural competency. The article concentrates on developing cross-cultural awareness that students of non-linguistic higher schools should have knowledge in order to effectively communicate with other people. This awareness can be developed by means of particular didactic organization of a foreign language teaching process. Some methods and models aimed at students’ adopting peculiarities of foreign non-linguistic reality are considered here. Moreover, the author argues that there is a necessity to pay extra attention to the parameters of shaping cross-cultural competence. It is claimed that intercultural sensitizer (culture assimilator) is one of the most adequate and efficient techniques in enhancing cross-cultural competence in the process of training.     Keywords: Cross-cultural competence; innovative potential; methods and models of teaching; didactic organization

The cultural competence approach has grown significantly in the North American human service professions. The reliance of social workers on cultural awareness to block the influence of their own culture in the helping process entails three problematic and conflicting assumptions, namely, the notion of human being as cultural artifact, the use of self as a technique for transcending cultural bias, and the subject-object dichotomy as a defining structure of the worker-client relationship. The authors contend that there are conceptual incoherencies within the cultural competence model's standard notion of self-awareness. The conceptualization of a dialogic self may unsettle the hierarchical worker-client relationship and de-essentialize the concept of culture. Cross-cultural social work thus becomes a site where client and worker negotiate and communicate to cocreate new meanings and relationships.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the innovation decisions of Emirati women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach This study uses a two-phased approach. In the first phase, empirical research on 50 Emirati female entrepreneurs is conducted to discover the extent of innovation in their ventures. In the second phase, the study uses an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to prioritize factors considered important in facilitating business innovation among SMEs. The AHP model is developed with 9 criteria and 25 sub-criteria based on the previous literature. Face-to-face interviews are conducted with Emirati female entrepreneurs operating nascent (n = 10), start-up (n = 10) and established innovative (n = 10) businesses to collect data for the AHP study. The data collected are interpreted and a priority vector is assigned to each criterion and sub-criterion. Findings Female SME owners prioritize government policies, research and development, innovation strategy and skill development as the main criteria that influence their innovation decisions. Family support, access to external financing, social networks and the allocation of funds are the main sub-criteria affecting their decisions to be innovative. Furthermore, respondents who are in the nascent business stage consider family motivation as the greatest influence on initiating new ideas through financial and moral support. Among all respondents, the nascent business owners rank skill development the highest because they are still in the initial stages of their business journeys, and thus, obtaining these skills could help them increase innovation and success in their ventures. However, respondents in the established stage rank innovation strategy the highest. Research limitations/implications The study results can help policymakers and women’s associations, such as businesswomen councils, identify the specific inhibitors and facilitators linked to innovation and, thereby, help develop various effective policies to promote innovation among Emirati women-owned SMEs. Originality/value The study is one attempt to facilitate innovation among Emirati women-owned SMEs through its efforts to discover the determinants of innovation efforts at nascent, start-up and established business stages as defined by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (2012). The study can help Emirati women-owned SMEs understand the critical factors influencing innovation and can encourage them to incorporate innovative characteristics for business growth and resilience. Furthermore, the study can provide insights for policymakers, financial institutions and non-governmental organizations on factors hindering innovation among Emirati women-owned SMEs, which may serve as a tool for creating resilience among female entrepreneurs.

The assistance had not absorbed optimally yet for telematics MSMEs. One of the reasons was the data of telematics MSME which still separated in the several institutions. This research aimed to selection of assistance feasibility attributes using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) data.  This data attributes conformed to the criteria of assistance feasibility which was implemented among by Ministry of Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and related institutions. The attributes involved the characteristic of technology, economics, human resources, partnerships, obstacles, prospect and other common conditions. The process of data preparation was needed involving cleaning, discretization, description and transformation of data. The AHP technique aimed to produce rankings and the value of attributes. The finding of this research showed that start-up essence and technology factors became the crucial attributes in the feasibility assessment. The other factors were the economy, human resources, partnerships and development planning. The findings of this research had given the new innovations; in addition of the scope of related substance Telematics Service MSMEs which was still studied limitedly, and the selection technique of assessment feasibility attributes based on Susenas data.
