AbstractThe study investigated the socio-economic factors affecting potato consumption among households in Odeda Local Government Area (LGA), Ogun State. Multistage sampling technique was used to gather information from 80 households using a structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression model. The study showed that 67.5 % of the household-heads were male, 42.5 % were less than 30 years old, more than half (53.8 %) had income less than NG₦50,000.00 (US$322.59) monthly while 55 % and 68.8 % spend less than NG₦2,000.00 (US$12.90) on sweet and Irish potato, respectively, on a monthly basis. The linear functional form for sweet potato regression result showed that the total household income and sweet potato market price were both significant at 5 % with the coefficient of determination (R2) being 0.611 while the double-log functional form for Irish potato regression result showed that age of household-head, Irish potato market price and price of substitute (yam) were significant at 5 %, 10 % and 10 %, respectively, with coefficient of determination (R2) being 0.897; and had a positive relationship with potato consumption in the study area. Conclusively, the age of household-head, total monthly income, price of potato and price of substitute were factors that determined consumption of potato in the study area. In order to combat problems of malnutrition and to contribute to improvement in households’ welfare in Odeda LGA, efforts should be intensified in ensuring that households have access to adequate quantity of food and promotion of households’ education on the nutritional values and human nutrition with respect to age and gender are necessary.

Studying the competitiveness of potato production in the Komi Republic is important for a deeper understanding of ways to ensure a stable financial state of the region's agriculture and an uninterrupted supply of local food to the population of the region. Purpose of the article: identification of the strengths and weaknesses of potato production in the Komi Republic, determination of market opportunities for the development of potato growing as a branch of specialization of agriculture in the region. Research hypothesis: there are four types of suppliers (agricultural organizations, farmers, personal subsidiary plots, importers) and five types of consumers (retail market, education and health care, public catering, wholesale trade, export) in the potato market of the Komi Republic. Market equilibrium is determined by the choice of win-win strategies by market participants. The article analyzes the main groups of potato producers in the Komi Republic, identifies the main groups of relations between them. A SWOT-analysis of potato production in the region was made. The main trends in the potato market in the Komi Republic are formulated. A decrease in consumption of fresh potatoes determines the development of its processing in the region and to complement the animal husbandry, logging etc. with potato growing. The authors recommend improving and creating new types of products and medicinal plants in the region for integration with potato growing. The article shows that in the potato market of the Komi Republic relations of cluster interaction, market division, mutual displacement, creation of value chains, strengthening of interaction and coordination on the part of local municipal and regional governments are formed. The practice of organic technologies and the brand of local products have a positive effect on the competitiveness of potatoes produced in the Komi Republic. The scope of the research results: state authorities and administrations of the Komi Republic, enterprises and organizations that sell and buy potatoes on the market of the Komi Republic.

Relevance. In many ways, a successful purchase and sale transaction is determined by the time it takes to complete it. The search for the best deal time is linked to the optimization of the time lag. The purpose of the study is to optimize the time lag of the agricultural market.Methods. This article considered a role of time in business processes for Russian potato market of producer into period 1998-2018.Results. There was trend of annual reduction about 365 thousand tons (1.2...1.7% of total) per year supply of potatoes on Russian domestic market of producers. Some priority of quantity vs price of producer been revealed. There was inverse proportional function between producers` prices and quantity of potatoes. That is than worse harvest that higher producer`s price. Reducing a supply of potatoes 1 million tons from agricultural market perhaps increase in producer prices by $ 8.5 / t (4...5% on average). Offered concept and hypothesis about linearization of equilibrium of market processes into conditions of time shifts of dynamics their parameters were confirmed. There verified assumption about existence of inter-interval time optimum which this linearization maximal business processes. In course of correlation analysis of dynamics of annual indicators of potato market, it revealed month May of current period as optimal time of producer's offers with price restrictions and diminishing returns, and month September with quantity restrictions and increasing returns. If fixation of producer`s prices situation of deals May more likely, in case of crop failure (limited quantity) in September.

Common scab, caused by Streptomyces scabies and related species, is a potato tuber blemish disease that causes reductions in marketable yield worldwide. Evidence of suppression of common scab by indigenous soil microbial populations has been found in several studies. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of how common scab severity relates functionally to potato varieties, farming systems, soil physical and chemical properties, and soil microbial communities. These factors may affect disease directly or indirectly by affecting one of the other variables. We performed a survey of 30 sampling locations across 12 fields in Wisconsin and used structural equation modeling to disentangle the direct effects of potato market classes, farm management (conventional versus organic), and soil physiochemical properties on common scab severity from their indirect effects mediated through soil bacterial and fungal communities. We found that, although potato market classes affected disease severity directly, the effects of farm management and soil physiochemistry were best explained as indirect, mediated by their impacts on soil bacterial communities. This suggests that evaluating the consequences of specific management practices for soil microbial communities may be useful for understanding disease pressure across fields.
