Age estimation is one of the important components in forensic science used for personal identification, biological profile reconstruction, and help narrowing the search possibilities. Age estimation can be done by various methods and biological evidence, such as the human face. The human face is one of biometrics that provides a variety of information.  The purpose of this article is to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of age estimation with face using smartphone for forensic identification based on previous studies and experiences. Age estimation by face is based on age progression that causes attrition and degeneration on soft tissue. With the development of technology, age estimation by face can be done with applications or websites on smartphone. In general, the utilization of smartphone can reduce waste, pollution, research cost and easier to save and share. A lot of applications have been developed and free to download. Unfortunately, the accuracy of its results is unknown. In conclusion, the applications for age estimation on smartphone give quiet good results and can be used as a supporting tool to estimate age in forensic identification.

Abstract: Forensic identification is a method to provide assistance for investigators in personal identification which is very important in court. Forensic anthropology is a branch of physical anthropology that assists medical forensic practice by focusing on individual biological profile asessment and reconstruction by using anthropometry. Body height is a parameter of human growth and health. In forensic anthropology, height is also a main biological profile in identification. Foot length can be used to determine body height since there is a correlation between these two biological profiles. This study aimed to obtain the relationship between foot length and body height. This was a quantitative analytical study. Subjects were students of batch 2012 of Faculty of Medicine, University of Sam Ratulangi Manado, aged >21 years. The results showed that there was a positive correlation (r= 0.539) with a probablity value of 0.000. Conclusion: There was a significant positive correlation between foot length and height. Age changes cause major variations in the appearance of human faces. Due to many lifestyle factors, it is difficult to precisely predict how individuals may look with advancing years or how they looked with "retreating" years. This paper is a review of age variation methods and techniques, which is useful to capture wanted fugitives, finding missing children, updating employee databases, enhance powerful visual effect in film, television, gaming field. Currently there are many different methods available for age variation. Each has their own advantages and purpose. Because of its real life applications, researchers have shown great interest in automatic facial age estimation. In this paper, different age variation methods with their prospects are reviewed. This paper highlights latest methodologies and feature extraction methods used by researchers to estimate age. Different types of classifiers used in this domain have also been discussed.

AbstractThe recent increase of the number of unidentified cadavers has become a serious problem throughout the world. As a simple and objective method for age estimation, we attempted to utilize Raman spectrometry for forensic identification. Raman spectroscopy is an optical-based vibrational spectroscopic technique that provides detailed information regarding a sample’s molecular composition and structures. Building upon our previous proof-of-concept study, we measured the Raman spectra of abdominal skin samples from 132 autopsy cases and the protein-folding intensity ratio, RPF, defined as the ratio between the Raman signals from a random coil an α-helix. There was a strong negative correlation between age and RPF with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.878. Four models, based on linear (RPF), squared (RPF2), sex, and RPF by sex interaction terms, were examined. The results of cross validation suggested that the second model including linear and squared terms was the best model with the lowest root mean squared error (11.3 years of age) and the highest coefficient of determination (0.743). Our results indicate that the there was a high correlation between the age and RPF and the Raman biological clock of protein folding can be used as a simple and objective forensic age estimation method for unidentified cadavers.

AbstractIn recent years, insertion/deletion (InDel) markers became a promising and useful supporting tool in forensic identification cases and biogeographic research field. In this study, 30 InDel loci were explored to reveal the genetic diversities and genetic relationships between Chinese Xinjiang Hui group and the 24 previously studied populations using varies methods such as forensic statistical parameter analysis, phylogenetic reconstruction, STRUCTURE analysis, multi-dimensional scaling, and principal component analysis. The observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.1971 (HLD118) to 0.5092 (HLD 92), 0.2222 (HLD 114) to 0.5000 (HLD 6), respectively. Besides, after Bonferroni correction, no deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium tests were found at all 30 loci in Xinjiang Hui group. The cumulative probability of exclusion and combined discrimination power were 0.988849 and 0.99999999999378, respectively, which indicated that the 30 loci could be used as complementary genetic markers for paternity test and be qualified for personal identification in forensic cases. In this study, we found that Xinjiang Hui group had close relationships with most Chinese groups, especially Han populations, and all the results based on different genetic methods we used had a strong support for this finding. The 30 InDel loci has important significance in forensic identification research, in spite of this, for a better understanding of genetic background of the Chinese Xinjiang Hui group, molecular genetic genotyping at various genetic markers is necessary in future studies.Summary StatementWe report here, a promising Individual identification and population differentiation maker which could be used in forensic cases.

Identification of victims in a disaster is a challenging process and requires use of both primary and secondary identifiers. Development of teeth is one of the routinely used methods of age estimation and helps in establishing deceased biological profile. Two children who lost their lives in 2014 in Nepal Airlines crash, were looked for the dental developmental status. One of the children had primary dentition, while the other had mixed dentition. This helped us in estimating age of these individuals reconciled with the chronological age provided by the relatives. This led to the identification of both the children, thus, emphasizing teeth as important means of identification in any disaster. Keywords: dental age; dental identification; disaster victim identification; forensic dentistry; forensic odontology.

Face is the easiest way to penetrate each other's personal identity. Face recognition is a method of personal identification using the personal characteristics of an individual to decide the identification of a person. The method of human face recognition consists basically of two levels, namely face detection and face recognition. There are three types of methods that are currently popular in the developed face recognition pattern, those are Eigen faces algorithm, Fisher faces algorithm and CNN neural network for face recognition

Nowadays the computer systems created a various types of automated applications in personal identification like biometrics, face recognition techniques. Face verification has turn into an area of dynamic research and the applications are important in law enforcement because it can be done without involving the subject. Still, the influence of age estimation on face verification become a challenge to decide the similarity of pair images from individual faces considering very limited of data base availability. We focus on the development of image processing and face detection on face verification system by improving the quality of image quality. The main objective of the system is to compare the image with the reference images stored as templates in the database and to determine the age and gender.
