Intercellular adhesion plays a role in cancer formation and protein has a key potential in maintaining cell adhesion, including syndecan-1. Meanwhile, oral cancer originates from the oral epithelium, which has an invasive and metastatic level. Its treatments involving chemotherapy and radiotherapy commonly leave unfavorable side effects, hence, suitable alternatives are needed. Natural ingredients are widely used as an alternative treatment for cancer, for example, Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum) which has anti-cancer and anti-angiogenic properties, induces apoptosis, stimulates an immune response, inhibits the degradation of Extracellular matrix (ECM), reduces inflammation, affects cell cycles, cytotoxic, and acts as an antioxidant.This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract from Ganoderma lucidum Cianjur isolate on syndecan-1 expression in KB CCL-17 oral cell cancer. This was an experimental study with a post-test only control group design, the treatment group used G. lucidum ethanol extract with a concentration of 2.12 μg/ml (P1), 4.24 μg/ml (P2), and 8.49 μg/ml (P3), while the positive control group used cisplatin with a concentration of 11.5 μg/ml (K1). In contrast, the negative control used aquadest (K0), while syndecan-1 expression was observed using the immunohistochemical examination.The highest syndecan-1 expansion rate was found in the treatment group with a concentration of 8.49 μg/ml. A significant difference was indicated by one-way ANOVA (p<0.05) between K0 - K1, K0 - P1, K0 - P2, K0 - P3, K1 - P1, K1 - P2, K1 - P3, P1 - P2, as well as P1 and P3. The administration of ethanol extract from G. lucidum Cianjur isolate increases syndecan-1 expression in KB CCL-17 oral cell cancer.

Various normal and pathologic findings might occasionally be found on the tongue and might confuse some patients and clinician due to its atypical presentation. This case report aimed to present a case report of multiple oral findings related to variants of normal and pathological findings on the tongue: geographic tongue, fissured tongue, and central papillary atrophy. A 53-year-old male patient came to Universitas Indonesia Dental Hospital for a dental check-up. Objective examination in the tongue showed depapilated areas surrounded by keratinized lining in the ventral and lateral left and right area of the tongue, multiple fissures in all over the dorsum of the tongue, and an ovoid redness area in the middle of 2/3 posterior dorsum part of the tongue. All those findings were asymptomatic. Those clinical findings were diagnosed as geographic tongue, fissured tongue, and central papillary atrophy. This case presents unique multiple variants of normal and pathological findings in the tongue. It is important to an oral health professional to have knowledge and ability to determine normal anatomy, variants of normal and pathological lesions. Patients should be informed and educated about oral mucosa normal variations and related clinical findings so they would not develop unnecessary anxiety. The inferior alveolar nerve block technique (Fischer's method) is a local anesthetic technique that is often used in daily dental and surgical treatment. However, the failure rate reaches 15-20% because many factors affect the technique's success. Therefore, this descriptive study aims to determine the knowledge of clinical dental students regarding the inferior alveolar nerve block technique and the management of the failure associated with its characteristics. A cross-sectional approach was employed by using a validated questionnaire consisting of 2 parts, namely 6 general questions and 12 knowledge questions, which were distributed to 68 clinical dental students in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara in 2019. The results showed that 51.5% of the students had good knowledge, 41.2% had fair knowledge and 7.4% had less knowledge. The highest percentage of students based on male gender had fair knowledge (10 people out of 15) and the female had good knowledge (30 people out of 53). The clinical dental students’ level of knowledge based on whether they have ever or never failed to perform an anesthetic block technique is in a good category. In conclusion, most of the clinical dental students at the Department of Oral Surgery in 2019 had a good level of knowledge about the inferior alveolar nerve block technique and its failure management.

Ameloblastoma, a common form of odontogenic tumor, is usually treated by surgery. However, wound infections remain a significant source of postoperative morbidity, accounting for about a quarter of the total number of nosocomial conditions. Surgical wound infection (SWI) is common after surgery, and in particular, wound infection has been linked with an intraoral surgical opening in 20–40-year-old patients. Common incisional closure complications in oral and maxillofacial surgery include postoperative wound infection, dehiscence, formation of hematomas, and skin flap necrosis, which lead to delayed healing of the incision. The data relating to the incidence of post-mandible resection SWI in Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung Hospital are not yet known. Therefore, the objective of this research was to assess the incidence of SWI in ameloblastoma patients after mandible resection treatment. This research adopted an observational and descriptive approach. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the research subjects were recruited between January 2018 and December 2019. This study showed the occurrence of SWI in 7 patients (2 men and five women) who had mandibular resection treatment for ameloblastoma and whose age range was 30–40 years. The results also revealed that the surgical openings in these patients were intraoral. In conclusion, findings demonstrated a higher prevalence of SWI in women after mandibular resection treatment than in men.

One of many possible ways of preventing Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is by removing tooth debris. Fluoride tooth paste usage by children under 3 years old must follow recommended quantity, because of its possibility of being ingested which then might cause fluorosis. Lysozyme as an active element in a toothpaste is able to mediate bacterial aggregation and inhibit bacterial adhesion and also activate bacterial autolysin by destructing bacterial cell wall. This study aimed to compared  Streptococcus mutans antimicrobial activity of non-fluoride lysozyme toothpaste of various concentration such as 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 %. This was an experimental research with post test only design. The tested tooth paste was lysozyme-contained with 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2% concentrations. Children tooth paste containing fluoride, enzyme tooth paste and 0.2% chlorhexidine became the positive control. Test of S. mutans antibacterial activity used 3 methods: disc diffusion, well, and microtiter plate method. Analytical test used Anova one way with Bonferoni post hoc and p<0.05 significant level. The results showed that all concentrations of lysozyme tooth paste had inhibitory effect on the growth of S. mutans (p<0.05). The highest mean of  S. mutans antibacterial activity in lysozyme tooth paste were on 0.1 and 0.2% concentrations. Conclusion stated that 0.1% concentration of lysozyme tooth paste can be used as an alternative tooth paste for children under 3 years old

Tumors located in the maxillofacial part of the body were classified by WHO in 2017 and among these are intraosseous form of fibromatosis known as Desmoplastic and Cemento-ossifying fibromas. These tumors usually occur in the head and neck region, especially in the mandible and are relatively rare in the maxilla. Meanwhile, this study aims to discribe a rare case of the cemento ossifying fibroma that had been previously diagnosed as desmoplastic fibroma with a mass tumor in the anterior of the maxilla. A 22 years old female reported to the Cipto Mangkusumo Hospital with the main complaint of a lump in the right side of the upper jaw which appeared 2 years prior to the operation. In April 2017, the patient had a biopsy in Tarakan Hospital and the result was a desmoplastic fibroma. Due to the lump enlargement, the patient was admitted to RSCM in July 2019 and had biopsy incision with a diagnosis of cemento ossifying fibroma which was confirmed by the histopathological examination and histology report. The resection of the right part of maxilla was conducted alongside with reconstruction using the free fibular flap. Moreover, cemento ossifying fibroma and desmoplastic fibroma shared similar features, namely, clinical, histological and radiological features which are important in establishing the diagnosis and treatment of patient. Hence, extensive enucleation or resection is required due to the progressive nature of the tumor to prevent the potential for further recurrences.

Panoramic radiographs can be used to detect temporomandibular morphology and condylar changes. This study shape-determines the female condyle in perimenopausal and postmenopausal using panoramic radiography. It used an observational survey technique with a sample of 80 people, consisting of 40 perimenopausal aged between 20 and 29, and 40 postmenopausal females aged over 52. The results on the perimenopausal condyle process obtained a round shape of 43.7%, an angle of 32.5%, and a pointed shape of 23.7%. Furthermore, the shape of the condylar process in postmenopause is 37.5% pointed, 30% angled, 25% round, and 7.5% flat. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance value of p<0.05. The results showed that changes in the size and shape of the condyles occur with age. There is a significant difference in the condyle shape between perimenopausal and postmenopausal periods.

Dentures is used to replace tooth loss. The most used denture base material is acrylic resin. The biological properties of acrylic resins give microorganisms the ability to colonize. Certain type of microorganism often found at the dentures base is Candida albicans. Denture’s disinfection is usually used to reduce Candida albicans. One of natural source that now is being widely researched is Ricinus communis oil. The purpose of this study was to analyze disinfection effect of Ricinus communis oil 10% on Candida albicans counts on heat polymerized acrylic resin. This research is an experimental laboratory study with a post-test only design. Samples was heat polymerization acrylic resin plates measuring 10 x 10 x 1 mm were made in the Department of Prosthodontic Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Sumatera Utara with 10 plates for each for 10% Ricinus communis oil group and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate group (control). The Candida albicans colonies count was carried out in the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara using colony counter. The data obtained was statistically count with the Kruskal-Wallis Test. The result showed the decrease in Candida albicans count with the highest value in the 10% Ricinus communis oil group is 9 x 100 CFU/ml and the highest value in the 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate group is 0 x 100 CFU/ml. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant results with p value of 0.0001 (p <0.05) indicating there was a disinfection effect of 10% Ricinus communis oil and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate on Candida albicans count of heat polymerized acrylic resin. The study concluded that 10% Ricinus communis oil effective at decreasing Candida albicans count.

Tooth extraction is a form of treatment in dentistry. Tooth extraction has the potential to cause excessive anxiety in patients because patients tend to think about things that will or can happen during the procedure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Cananga aromatherapy (Cananga odorata) on the anxiety level of patients at RSGM USU. This research method is a quasi-experimental study using a re-experimental design non-randomized pretest and posttest control group design. The sample was divided into 2 groups, namely the treatment group and the control group. Each group consists of 16 people who will extract the posterior teeth of the upper and/or lower jaw. The treatment group was given a Cananga aromatherapy nasal inhaler and the control group was given an empty nasal inhaler without Cananga aromatherapy. Blood pressure and pulse measurements were taken twice. The first measurement after the patient was given informed consent and the MDAS questionnaire (Modified Dental Anxiety Scale) and the second measurement after inhaling the Cananga aromatherapy nasal inhaler and empty nasal inhaler without Cananga aromatherapy within 10 cm from the nasal cavity for 5 minutes. The results of this study were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. In the treatment group, there was a significant decrease in blood pressure and pulse compared to the control group with a value of p = 0.000 <0.005. This study concludes that Cananga aromatherapy is effective in reducing the anxiety level of patients before tooth extraction in RSGM USU.

Tooth extraction is a process of removing teeth from the alveolar bone. In wound healing, fibroblast are very important cells. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mobe leaf 1% and 3% extract gel (Artocarpus lakoocha) on fibroblast proliferation in post extraction tooth socket wound healing. This research used 16 samples of wistar rats, divided into 4 groups, a positive control group, a negative control group and a 1% and 3% mobe leaf extract gel group. The left mandibular incisors were extracted, then 1% and 3% gels of mobe leaf extract were applied on day 1 to day 7. Data analysis was calculated using the Kruskal-Wallis test on clinical data and one way ANOVA test for microscopic. The result of the socket wound healing activity test for a good concentration of mobe leaf extract gel was 3%. This research shows significant resultith p-value of 0.018 (< 0.05) on the closure of the socket wound clinically which means the closure of the wound accelerates because of the mobe leaf 3% extract gel treatment. The distance of fibroblast on microscopically shows significant resultith a p-value of 0.002 (< 0.05), which means that there was an enlargement of the distance fibroblast at the socket wound closure with application of mobe leaf 3% extract gel. From the results of the study it can be concluded that mobe leaf 3% extract gel has the best ability to show acceleration the closure of the socket wound either clinically or microscopically.
