This study explores the opportunity to implement environmental instruments to promote sustainable tourism development. Environmental instruments are tools, regulations and strategies that can improve the sustainability of a destination. This study was based on ideas from Governing the Commons Theory and Stakeholder Theory, which suggests sustainable development can be achieved by including stakeholders to form collective management and avoid natural resource tragedies. The study uses face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (n=41) to explore environmental instruments to implement in Savusavu, Fiji -- a small island developing state (SIDS). The study identified lack of waste management, education and participation amongst stakeholders and the island’s susceptibility to climate change as the key issues the destination faces in developing a sustainable tourism industry. The study recommends implementing a voluntary fund, environmental education and stakeholder participation instruments to promote sustainable development in Savusavu.

This article discusses the role of women in supporting sustainable tourism development in Bali by promoting Balinese cuisine to the tourism world. To date, studies on the role of Balinese women in the tourism industry have looked mainly at women as ordinary workers or professionals. In fact, Balinese women operate as culinary entrepreneurs who have not only been successful in introducing Balinese cuisine to the world of tourism but have opened up job opportunities for men and women alike. The data presented in this article was collected through observation of four leading Balinese women who run successful local culinary outlets or restaurants offering local dishes, and is complemented by interviews and other published sources relating to their business activities. The four pioneering women surveyed are Men Tempeh of Gilimanuk (West Bali) serving chicken betutu, the suckling pig restaurant manager Ibu Oka in Ubud, the owner of Made’s Warung Ni Made Masih, and the catering company owner Ibu Warti Buleleng, based in Denpasar. This article concludes that these four Balinese culinary heroines or srikandi have successfully managed to preserve and promote Balinese dishes to the world of tourism while contributing to the sustainable development of Balinese tourism by providing opportunities for tourists to experience local cuisine.

Sustainable tourism development will be achieved through some major changes taking place in the tourism industry in Romania, in the following period. These changes should cover both aspects of structure in tourism and processes and interactions in tourist activities. First of all, the tourism in Romania shall also adopt a diversification strategy, focusing on the integration of new activity fields, as new services, along with the improvement of the existent ones, new tourist facilities, by the construction of centers/units, in compliance with the standards requested by the current tourism, but in the first place of some new products and tourist programmes provided by the current tourist centers. By studying consumer behavior of European tourists visiting Romania, and trends in their preferences regarding requested touristic product the authors propose a pattern for tourism product diversification and expansion of several existing forms of tourism.

The full and comprehensive inclusion of sustainable tourism in Russian tourism studies and thematic plans of disciplines at the present time are particularly important nowadays. Meanwhile we can note very superficial and simplified understanding of the concept of sustainable development in tourism, when they simply proclaim the necessity of taking into account natural, social limitations, and interests of the local economy, but at the same time, the Russian researchers and teachers do not have enough awareness of all the possible refractions of this problem. Passed at the 22nd of September 2016 in RSUTS scientific-practical seminar «Sustainable rural tourism in Russia» was drafted to help resolve the identified problems. Leading international and Russian experts in the field of sustainable tourism development gave the examples of their own researches which demonstrate the breadth and multi-dimensionality of sustainability in tourism. There were presented and illustrated with the method of case studies such topics as 1) the correlation of center and periphery as a factor in the long-term sustainability in tourism; 2) service orientation as a factor of long-term competitiveness of destinations; 3) the problem of finding the optimal balance between state regulation and ethnic autonomy; 4) the interests of local residents and their informing with the positive results of tourism development; 5) factor of liminality in tourist experiences; 6) avoidance of excessive standardization and universalization of tourism products as a factor of competitiveness of peripheral destinations; 7) the concept of touristscapes and taskscapes; 8) optimal route network and reference point for the sustainable development of tourism; 9) the importance of tourism for the depressed rural settlements of Russia; 10) the peculiarities of small businesses processes in rural tourism, 11) entrepreneurship as the factor of increase of stability and competitiveness of the tourism industry under crisis conditions. These and other aspects of sustainable tourism development were the subject of extensive discussion at the scientific-practical seminar, which resulted in a more complete understanding of the paradigm of sustainability in the current realities of the Russian tourism industry. The article presents views, concepts and elements of academic debate, which took place during the seminar from representatives of five countries: Russia, Norway, Australia, Sweden and Iceland. The purpose of this publication consisted in the systematization of the academic content of the reports and scientific messages, and the explanation of how they can contribute to strengthening the concept of sustainable tourism as a comprehensive and productive paradigm in tourism research and education-conceptual approach.

The article considers the directions of development and promotion of national tourism, segmentation of tourists by the most important criteria, such as consumer preferences, geography and demography, which will analyze their perception of destination. The strategic directions of forecasting, planning and programming of sustainable development of the national tourism industry, as well as the criteria for its promotion on the world stage are determined. It is proposed to use the brand of the tourist market as the only process of creating and managing the tourist image of the country in order to achieve its status, which guarantees a stable circle, determines consumer benefits, creates added value for tourist services and strengthens market position in tourism. A system of indicators for assessing the effectiveness of sustainable development in the context of strategic positioning of national tourism is presented. The management system of the tourism industry has been improved in the interests of increasing the attractiveness of tourism products offered on the national tourism market of Ukraine. Quantitative tools have been developed to assess the effectiveness of sustainable tourism development, which consists in calculating such indicators as the total contribution to the economy, the number of jobs created, the contribution of regional markets to local budgets, the probability of risk of loss of planned revenues. and make the necessary management decisions in a timely manner to adjust exceptional measures. A set of measures has been developed to create organizational and economic prerequisites for effective information support for sustainable development of the national tourist space, a database of market participants, increasing the level of scientific validity of management decisions in the field of tourism development based on reliable information. It is substantiated that the development of priority types of tourism and improvement of tourist products will help increase their attractiveness, create favorable conditions for increasing the influx of tourists and the profitability of tourist infrastructure.

Introduction. The impact of globalization and convergence on the rapprochement of nations leads to an increase in the tourism role through strengthening human needs for socialization in today's information society. The underutilization of the domestic potential of the tourism industry necessitates its exploration to formulate directions for further development and growth. The purpose of the study is further development of the theoretical basis and conditions for the sustainable develop-ment of the tourism sector in the region. Results. The key issues of constant coordination and harmonization of human relations and environment are identi-fied in the context of sustainable tourism development by vectors of time and space. The alternative absence of sustainable tourism development paradigm has been proved. The concept of «sustainable development» is given. It is suggested to un-derstand the sustainable development of tourism as a development that can fully meet the needs of tourists in the present time, taking into account the interests of the tourist destination in expanding the reproduction of their own resource potential in the future. The determinants, criteria and general principles of the sustainable tourism development concept are defined. The interrelation of the criterion with the following components is justified: «availability – quality – safety» – their essence is disclosed. The role of tourism as a component of sustainable regional development is revealed. The types of sustainability that are inherent in tourism scenarios have been described. The basis of urgent problems of tourist development and recreational sphere of the region is monitored. The changes to tourism legislation developed by the Ministry of Economic Development has been considered. The re-sults of the tourist industry analysis of Ukraine by individual types are given. The low attractiveness of Ukraine as a tourist center has been proved, where the main reason is underdeveloped infrastructure, which requires considerable investment. The directions of development of individual segments of tourism are determined. The ways of brand developing of Ukraine as a tourist destination are considered. Improper waste management continues to be a major challenge in the backwater destinations of South Kerala, India and the local government has been identified as a key player having a strong influence on sustainable tourism development initiatives in the destination. The study examines the major obstacles encountered while implementing sustainable tourism development practices in the backwater destinations of South Kerala, India. Qualitative data collected with the support of semi-structured interviews with top government officials of the Tourism Industry is used for the study. The findings from the study show that improper waste management affects sustainable tourism development in the backwater destinations, and that community involvement and community support are pre-requisites for implementing solid waste management practices in the backwater destinations of the state. The study also enlightens the roles of various stakeholders in waste management so as to develop a strong perspective of sustainable tourism development in the region.

The Tourism Industry in South Kerala focuses more on Houseboat Tourism and Backwater Tourism. The unique, natural features set this destination apart from nearby places, as backwater destinations are rich in numerous natural resources. The sustainable development of these resources will highly enhance the livelihood of the communities in the backwater regions. They will be able to attract tourists seeking unique backwater experiences. Therefore, this article intends to comprehend the stakeholders’ perceptions on Sustainable Tourism Development in the backwater destinations of South Kerala in India. A total of 277 respondents participated in the research and the study adopted a quantitative research design, while considering the influence of various factors on the Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability. The data gathered from the study illustrated that the perception of stakeholders about Sustainable Tourism Development varied across different groups. Hence, all the stakeholders in the Tourism Industry need to work together, as this coordination will help to strengthen future development plans, in order to minimize the negative impacts of tourism in the backwater destinations of South Kerala. The study has also identified key turning points that will help to reshape the Sustainable Development of backwater tourism destinations of South Kerala.

The tourism industry has high potential and nowadays it is being categorized as one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. Sustainable tourism is the concept of visiting some place as a visitor and trying to make a positive impact on the environment, society, and economy and tourism development must be based on sustainability principles. Understanding the potential of each region allows the researcher and planner to identify the development way in accordance with the current situation. This study is aimed at developing sustainable tourism in Pasargad region with planning and definition of strategies. Appropriately, to achieve this goal SWOT analysis is used for conducting a comprehensive assessment for development. Effective factors in sustainable development are evaluated. As a result, for sustainable tourism development, an offensive/ competitive strategy (SO) should be the priority of these programs using internal strength to realize the external opportunity in Pasargad region.
