This work is part of a project to create a device for monitoring changes in the composition of the air environment. The article describes the main elements of the repeater unit included in the measuring device. The results of modeling the developed band-pass filter, which is part of the waveguide path of the repeater, are presented. Experimental studies of the filter and circulator parameters are also carried out. The technical capabilities of the electronic part of the repeater unit, namely microwave amplifiers and a controlled phase shifter, are described.

A Morlet-like wavelet cluster-based method for band-pass filtering and envelope demodulation is described. Via appropriate choice of wavelet parameters, a wavelet cluster combined with multi-Morlet-like wavelets can be used as a band-pass filter with zero phase shift, flat topped pass-band and rapid attenuation in the transition band. It can be used to extract high frequency natural vibration components. The imaginary part of the Morlet-like wavelet cluster is the Hilbert transformation of its real part. This can be used to implement envelope demodulation and extract the envelope component of the high frequency resonance band. The method is applied for fault diagnosis relating to bearing defects in a dry vacuum pump. It is shown that the fault characteristic frequencies can be extracted effectively. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated in experimental studies.

Tunable microwave magnetoelectric devices based on layered ferrite-ferroelectric structures are described. The theory and experiment for attenuator, band-pass filter and phase shifter are presented. Tunability of the ME devices characteristics can be executed by application of an electric field. This electric tuning is relatively fast and is not power-consuming. The attenuator insertion losses vary from 26 dB to 2 dB at frequency 7251 MHz. The tuning range of 25 MHz of band-pass filter at frequency 7360 MHz was obtained. A maximum phase shift of 30–40 degree at the frequency region 6–9 GHz was obtained.

A model of the estimation of the ferroelectric-based phase-shifter figure of merit concerning the material properties and phase-shifter design parameters is presented. The influence of ferroelectric material tunability and losses on phase-shifter characteristics are analyzed. Two approaches to phase-shifter design (transmission line and band-pass filter) are considered. The review of the published results on the ferroelectric phase-shifter design was performed to approve the method proposed. Recommendations to optimize the phase-shifter development process are suggested on the basis of the elaborated model and analysis performed.

The 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (MJ 8.0) occurred off the southeastern coast of Tokachi, Japan, and generated a large tsunami which arrived at Tokachi Harbor at 04:56 with a wave height of 4.3 m. Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) recovered records of water pressure and sea-bed acceleration at the bottom of the tsunami source region. These records are first introduced with some findings from Fourier analysis and band-pass filter analysis. Water pressure disturbance lasted for over 30 minutes and the duration was longer than those of accelerations. Predominant periods of the pressure looked like those excited by Rayleigh waves. Next, numerical simulation was conducted using the dynamic tsunami simulation technique able to represent generation and propagation of Rayleigh wave and tsunami, with a satisfactory result showing validity and usefulness of this technique. Keywords: Earthquake, Rayleigh wave, tsunami, near-field
