Combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers can play an important role for increasing yield and quality of soybean. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted at Genetics and Plant Breeding farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University from July to November, 2011 to evaluate the effect of cowdung and poultry manure with chemical fertilizer on the yield and quality of soybean cv. BINA soybean-2. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design having 9 treatments viz. control (CT), 100% recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (RDCF100%), 50% RDCF (RDCF50%), cowdung 10 t ha-1 (CD10 t ha-1), 50% RDCF + CD 5 t ha-1 (RDCF50% + CD5 t ha-1), 75% RDCF + CD 3 t ha-1 (RDCF75% + CD3 t ha-1), poultry manure 3 t ha-1 (PM3 t ha-1), 50% RDCF + PM 1.5 t ha-1 (RDCF50% + PM1.5 t ha-1) and 75% RDCF + PM 1 t ha-1 (RDCF75% + PM1 t ha-1) with 3 replications. All the treatments significantly influenced the yield, yield attributing parameters and protein content except oil content of BINA soybean-2. The highest plant height, yield, branches plant-1, filled pods plant-1, grain plant-1 and 100-grain wt. were found in RDCF100%, which were statistically identical with RDCF75%+PM1 t ha-1 and RDCF75%+CD3 t ha-1 and the lowest values of all the parameters were obtained from control treatment. The maximum protein content was observed in RDCF100%, which was identical to RDCF75%+PM1 t ha-1 and RDCF75%+CD3 t ha-1 and the lowest value was found in control. The overall finding of this study indicated that organic manure in combination with the recommended dose of chemical fertilizers can be applied to achieve better yield and quality of soybean as well as to improve soil fertility status. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2013 to May 2014 to evaluate the integrated use of poultry manure with prilled urea and USG for improving the growth, yield and protein content of aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment comprised 14 treatments viz. control (no manure and no fertilizer), recommended dose of prilled urea (115 kg N ha-1), urea super granules (USG) 1.8 g (55 kg N ha-1), USG 2.7 g (80 kg N ha-1), poultry manure (PM) 2.5 t ha-1, PM 5 t ha-1, recommended dose of prilled urea + PM 2.5t ha-1, recommended dose of prilled urea + PM 5 t ha-1, 50% of recommended dose of prilled urea + PM 2.5 t ha-1, 50% of recommended dose of prilled urea + PM 5 t ha-1, USG 1.8 g + PM 2.5 t ha-1, USG 1.8 g + PM 5 t ha-1, USG 2.7 g + PM 2.5 t ha-1and USG 2.7 g + PM 5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Morphological characteristics, yield contributing characters and yield of aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50) were significantly influenced by integrated use of poultry manure with prilled urea and  USG. USG 2.7 g + PM 5 t ha-1 gave the highest plant height, number of tillers hill-1 and total dry matter production at all sampling dates while their corresponding lowest values were recorded in control. The highest yield contributing characters viz. number of effective tillers hill-1 (13.08), grains panicle-1 (124.26g) and 1000-grain weight  (21.41g) were recorded in USG 2.7 g + PM 5 t ha-1 and the lowest values were recorded in control. The highest grain yield (5.33 t ha-1) and protein content (7.49%) were obtained at USG 2.7 g + PM 5 t ha-1 which was as good as recommended dose of prilled urea (115 kg N ha-1) + PM 5 t ha-1, USG 2.7 g + PM 2.5 t ha-1, USG 1.8 g + PM 5 t ha-1, recommended dose of prilled urea (115 kg N ha-1) + PM 2.5 t ha-1 while the lowest one (2.00 t ha-1) was obtained in control plots. The integrated use of poultry manure (5 t ha-1) with USG 1.8 g (55 kg N ha-1) appeared as the promising practice because of reducing considerable amount of prilled urea or USG in aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50) cultivation in terms of grain yield and grain protein content.Progressive Agriculture 27 (2): 86-93, 2016

A study was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during Boro season of 2014 to evaluate the effect of integrated use of manures and fertilizers for maximizing the growth and yield of BRRI dhan28. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six treatments and four replications. The treatments include T0 [Control], T1 [Soil Test Basis-Chemical Fertilizer], T2 [(Cowdung) + STB-CF] on IPNS basis, T3 [(Poultry Manure) + STB-CF] on IPNS basis, T4 [(Compost) + STB-CF] on IPNS basis, and T5 [Farmer’s practice]. The maximum grain yield of 4340 kg ha-1 (95.59% increase over control) and straw yield of 4024 kg ha-1 (56.42% increase over control) were recorded in T3 [ (PM) + STB-CF]. The lowest grain and straw yields were found for T0 (Control) treatment. The N, P, K and S contents and uptake by BRRI dhan28 were profoundly influenced due to combined application of manures and fertilizers. The performance of the treatment T3 was better than T1, T2 and T4 in producing the yield of grain and straw of BRRI dhan28 although they received the same amount of nutrients. The results indicate that application of fertilizers in combination with poultry manure could be considered more effective in rice production. So, the treatment T3 can be used for the successful cultivation of BRRI dhan28.Res. Agric., Livest. Fish.3(1): 99-104, April 2016

Different crops have variations in their responses to applied micronutrients in soil. A study was conducted on floodplain soil of Bangladesh to explore the response of potato to application of micronutrients in soil. The experimental site was located at farmers’ field in Chandina upazila under Cumilla district of Bangladesh covering the soils of Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain (AEZ 19) during 2011-12. Randomized complete block design with 3 replications of each treatment was used in the experiment, where seven treatments including a control were tested. Additive element trial technique was followed while designing the treatments taking six micronutrients i. e. Zn, B, Cu, Mn, Fe and Mo at the rate of 3, 2, 2, 3, 5 and 1 kg ha-1, respectively. Macronutrients, such as N, P, K and S were applied at recommended rates to all plots. The highest tuber yield (28.7 t ha-1) was produced by the combined application of Zn and B. Only Zn application was sufficient to obtain the highest content of protein as well as content of almost all the nutrients in potato tuber. Antagonistic relation between Zn and P in soil-plant system was recorded in the study. Zinc and boron application influenced different growth and yield parameters of potato while the other four added micronutrients did not have any significant effect but combined application of Zn, B, Cu, Mn, Fe and Mo had beneficial role for better plant growth and production. Proper management of zinc and boron fertilizers including optimization of application rates of those nutrients can help to uphold the yield and quality of potato in floodplain soil. SAARC J. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July to December 2014 with a view to finding out the effect of age of seedlings at staggered transplanting and nutrient management on growth and yield of aromatic fine grained rice (cv. BRRI dhan38). The experiment consisted of three ages of seedlings (30, 45 and 60 day-old) at staggered transplanting and six nutrient managements viz. control (no nutrients), recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers, 50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + cowdung @ 5 t ha-1, 50% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 and 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The effect of age of seedlings at staggered transplanting, nutrient management and their interactions were significant on crop characters, yield components and yield of aromatic fine rice. The tallest plant was recorded due to transplanting 30- day old seedlings fertilized with 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The highest leaf area index (6.55), number of total tillers hill-1 (12.56), number of effective tillers hill-1 (8.54), panicle length (24.07cm) and number of grains panicle-1 (141.3) were recorded in 30-day old seedlings fertilized with 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 while the lowest values were recorded in 60-day old seedling with control. In case of sterile spikelets panicle-1, 60-day old seedlings with control treatment showed the highest value (30.94). The highest grain (3.85 t ha-1) and straw (5.29 t ha-1) yields were obtained in 30-day old seedlings fertilized with 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. Therefore, 30-day old seedlings fertilized with 75% of recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 appeared as the promising technique for appreciable growth and grain yield of aromatic fine grained rice (cv.
