Background: Ramadan involves one month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to determine the effect of Ramadan fasting on weight and body composition. Methods: In May 2018, we searched six databases for publications that measured weight and body composition before and after Ramadan, and that did not attempt to influence physical activity or diet. Results: Data were collected from 70 publications (90 comparison groups, 2947 participants). There was a significant positive correlation between starting body mass index and weight lost during the fasting period. Consistently, there was a significant reduction in fat percentage between pre-Ramadan and post-Ramadan in people with overweight or obesity (−1.46 (95% confidence interval: −2.57 to −0.35) %, p = 0.010), but not in those of normal weight (−0.41 (−1.45 to 0.63) %, p = 0.436). Loss of fat-free mass was also significant between pre-Ramadan and post-Ramadan, but was about 30% less than loss of absolute fat mass. At 2–5 weeks after the end of Ramadan, there was a return towards, or to, pre-Ramadan measurements in weight and body composition. Conclusions: Even with no advice on lifestyle changes, there are consistent—albeit transient—reductions in weight and fat mass with the Ramadan fast, especially in people with overweight or obesity.

Objectives: The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of fasting during Ramadan on plasma adiponectin and TNF-α levels. Methods: This is a cross sectional study, conducted at Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST), Karachi, comprising a total of 55 (50%) females and 55 (50%) males whose ages ranged between 20 and 40 years, and fasted during Ramadan (June-July 2014) were enrolled in the study. Subjects were separated into normal weight, overweight and obese males and females. Anthropometric measurements and Fasting venous blood samples were taken at first and last (29th) day of Ramadan. Plasma adiponectin and TNF-alpha levels were assayed with ELISA kits. All values were calculated and presented as mean ± standard error of the mean (SEM) and by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures. P values < 0.05 were accepted as significant. Results: Body mass index (BMI) (Kg/m2) in over-weight and obese male subjects exhibited considerable reduction (P<0.05; P<0.05), post Ramadan when compared to their respective pre Ramadan fasting weights. Noticeable and significant reduction was also observed in BMI of obese females (P<0.05). Post Ramadan Overweight Males (P<0.05) and Post Ramadan Obese Males (P<0.001) exhibited significantly elevated plasma adiponectin (μg/mL) values. While plasma adiponectin mean concentration of only obese females were significantly improved at last week of Ramadan (P<0.01). Fasting in Ramadan significantly decreased TNF-α (pg/mL) levels of post obese males and females than Pre-Ramadan-groups (P<0.05; P<0.01) respectively. Conclusion: The study reports of noticeable changes with Ramadan fasting resulting increase of plasma adiponectin and decrease of TNF-α levels as well as body weight. The study strongly suggests further investigations on larger sample sizes with possible association of dietary restrictions and weight loss on mechanism of enhanced adiponectin and reduced TNF-α in obese and overweight persons who fast on Ramadan pattern. Two studies investigated the different contribution of positive and negative associations to the size of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) effect. A Many-Facet Rasch Measurement analysis was applied for the purpose. Across different IATs (Race and Weight) and different groups of respondents (White, Normal weight, and Obese people) we observed that positive words increase the IAT effect whereas negative words tend to decrease it. Results suggest that the IAT is influenced by a positive associations primacy effect. As a consequence, we argue that researchers should be careful when interpreting IAT effects as a measure of implicit prejudice.

Based on the analysis of 13,110 medical examinations performed on a standardized population of pneumoconiosis patients recorded on the F.O.D. computer file, the authors describe the value of the subjective estimations of »obesity«, »thinness« or »normal weight« by their correlation with the observed weight and height. Although there are striking differences in appreciation between the physicians performing the examinations, the qualifications »obese«, »thin« or »normal« correspond with real group differences in weight, between certain limits which can be defined. The ratio between the observed weight and the expected weight (using the Broca formula) shows the same pattern. In tins way it becomes possible to propose upper and lower limits for obesity, thinness and normal weight based on purely empiric data. Feeding back this information to the examining physicians should help reduce the differences between physicians and improve the results. Therefore, the authors find it useful to keep such information in the computer file.

Ramadan fasting is a mandatory worship for the faithful both men and women as well as past and later ones. Fasting during Ramadan that Allah prescribes in the Qur'an has a certain meaning and purpose. This paper will explain the meaning ofthe word 'Ramadan' and the purpose of fasting, and the meanings associated with the words ‘knowledge’ (‘ilm) described in the verses of the Quran and the Hadis of the Prophet Muhammad. This paper also aims to know about the religiosity and degrees (maqamat) that can be gained by faithful associated with worship based onknowledge. In addition, in the conduct of worship, a person needs knowledge. People who are knowledgeable and faithful will be given a higher degree by God because the knowledgeable people will obey and submit to God. Thus, it can be concluded that faith, knowledge, and worship are triangles whose sides connect and fill one another and are inseparable. Acts of kindness, noble character (amal shalih) has done by the faithful and knowledgeable can lead him to achieve the predicate of takwa as the highest degree.
