The flow of calcium and phosphorus to the proximal duodenum was measured over 22 24-hr periods in sheep fitted with re-entrant duodenal cannulae. The sheep were offered one of six diets in a ground and pelleted form supplying 1.4–30 g of nitrogen per day from three different protein sources. The estimated metabolizable energy content of the diets was 1.9 or 1.3 Mcal/kg. The diets supplied 2.0–5.8 g of calcium per day and 2.2–3.3 g of phosphorus per day. Between 49.9% and 61.2% of the dietary calcium intake appeared at the duodenum in the sheep given all diets except the one supplying 1.4 g of nitrogen per day, where the value was 98.5%. There were highly significant correlations between the daily calcium intake and the flow of calcium to the duodenum, the excretion of calcium in the faeces, the retention of calcium and the calcium content of the rumen. Between 85.0 and 119.1% of the daily phosphorus intake appeared at the duodenum in the sheep given all six diets. The flow of phosphorus was correlated with the dietary phosphorus intake. There were significant correlations between the flow of calcium and phosphorus to the duodenum and, also, their retention.

True metabolizable energy (TME) of soybean meal and rapeseed products was determined in two laboratories by feeding the ingredients singly or mixed with a basal diet. Apparent metabolizable energy (AME) was also determined on the same samples and the values compared with TME. TME results between the two laboratories agreed well for the soybean meal and rapeseed meals obtained either by feeding the ingredients alone or with the assay diet, but with whole rapeseeds there was wide disagreement. This was due to poor and variable utilization of the whole seeds by birds in the two laboratories. AME values for the whole rapeseeds were considerably lower than expected, but the values for the rapeseed meals were as anticipated. Grinding significantly (P < 0.01) increased the AME of Tower and Candle rapeseed and the TME of Candle rapeseed. Tower and Candle rapeseed meals did not differ significantly in TME or AME; nor were there differences in the ground seed of the two cultivars.

The efficiency with which the gross energy content of herring (Clupea harengus), mackerel (Scomber scombrus), and trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is metabolized was determined for 11 captive Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias). There was a linear relationship between apparent metabolized energy and gross energy intake for the mackerel and trout. This relationship was lower and more variable for herring. Estimates of the apparent metabolizable energy coefficient for mackerel and trout were affected by the level of energy intake. Correcting for endogenous energy losses in the excreta yielded estimates of true metabolizable energy coefficients that were independent of gross energy intake. The true metabolizable energy coefficient of mackerel and trout did not differ and averaged 0.866 (SD = 0.014, n = 3 diets). Correcting for nitrogen retention did not improve the estimate of the metabolizable energy coefficient. The metabolizable energy coefficient of herring was highly variable and showed no consistent pattern in relation to energy intake.

This study aimed to evaluate açaí meal in diets for commercial laying hens on apparent nutrient digestibility and apparent metabolizable energy. A total of 72 Hissex White laying hens (52-wks-old) were distributed in a completely randomized design, where treatments consisted of a control diet and an experimental diet (25% açaí meal) with six replicates of six birds each. Data collected were subjected to polynomial regression at 5%. Differences (p < 0.05) were detected in digestibility of all evaluated nutrients. Hens fed diets with 25% açaí meal presented worse (p < 0.05) metabolization and use of energy content. It can be concluded that hens fed diets containing açaí meal presented better use of crude protein, non-fiber carbohydrates and mineral matter. However, there was worse use of dry matter, fiber carbohydrates and ether extract. This result directly affected the energy metabolism of the birds. The inclusion of açaí meal reduced the energy use.

Standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (AMEn) in defatted black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) were determined in broiler chicks. A total of 180-d-old male broiler chicks (Ross 708) were fed a commercial broiler starter diet to day 13 of age. On day 14, birds were weighed and placed in cages (10 birds per cage; n = 6) and allocated one of two semi-purified cornstarch-based diets. The diets were nitrogen-free diet (NFD) for estimating endogenous AA losses and 20% crude protein test diet with BSFLM as the sole source of AA. All diets had 0.5% titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an indigestible marker and the ratio of cornstarch to sucrose and soy oil in the test diet was identical to NFD to calculate AMEn by difference method. Birds were given feed and water ad libitum. Excreta samples were collected on days 17–20 and ileal digesta on day 21. The SID of lysine, methionine, cysteine, threonine, isoleucine, and valine was 86.3%, 88.7%, 72.8%, 85.5%, 89.6%, and 88.6%, respectively. Apparent retention of gross energy in BSFLM was 64.5% ± 2.27% and AMEn was 2902 ± 101 kcal kg−1 dry matter. The data will aid in accurate incorporation of BSFLM in poultry feeding programs.
