EDITORIAL Apart from being a journal that can publish scientific articles from all disciplines of science and technology, Aloha International Journal of Multidisciplinary Advancement (AIJMU) also opens opportunities for authors to publish scientific papers in various forms, both research and non-research articles; what is important is scientific and beneficial to the scientific community. One segment of the scientific community that is in dire need of important information from journals is diploma and undergraduate students. They really need basic level sciences, which can help them to complete their studies. Therefore, AIJMU invited lecturers and researchers to publish articles in tutorial form. The tutorial material is expected to be a new technique or procedure which is a scientific finding that needs to be introduced to the scientific community immediately, but it is also possible to publish other types of tutorials that are considered useful for the scientific community. As an article that is a practical guide, of course, it is likely that the size of the article is relatively long, so especially for tutorial articles, the number of words allowed is not limited, but it is hoped that the author uses a concise and simple presentation style. It is hoped that the tutorial articles published in this journal can really help practitioners, academics and students, who in turn can contribute to the development of science and technology in all disciplines of science and technology.

AbstractThe interdependence of science and technology has been of high interest for researchers from different fields for several decades now. As they represent different means of knowledge output protection, patents and research articles generally have different reasons for creation and different audiences. However, some of the inventors may be interested in making an impact on the scientific community and vice versa. This interaction between technology space (patents) and science space (articles) is especially important for high-technology fields, where both research institutions and enterprises play important roles in the innovative environment. This paper investigates the interaction between science and technology in the case of German plant biotechnology. With the help of network analysis tools, the evolution and co-evolution of co-inventors’ and co-authors’ networks for the period 1995–2015 is explored. Finally, the topics of the patents and papers from the overlap were analyzed with the help of text mining tools in order to identify the differences of topics between science/technology and their overlap. As a result, sizable differences in nature and advancement are observed between the two network types. Although the overlap between these spheres of innovative activities increased over time, the role author-inventors played in the science or technology space varied.

Abstract This paper on Spanish for Science and Technology (SST) analyzes the rhetorical functions carried out by the selection of voice — active, passive or se-passive — in five biological research articles in Spanish. It compares these rhetorical functions with those found in French and English scientific papers. Finally it suggests that there may be some universals which can be established on the basis of this comparison, but only through the introduction of an intermediate level of “discourse function” between the levels of rhetorical function and the level of grammatical form.

This letter is about a recent publication in the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal titled: “The significance of uvula after palatoplasty: A new technique to improve the aesthetic outcome” published by Elsherbiny et al (Cleft Palate Craniofacial J 2018;55(3):451-455). The authors present the use of one hemi-uvula for uvular repair during primary palatoplasty as their “new technique.” The method of primary uvuloplasty using one-hemiuvula was extensively used by different surgeons in south America and presented and published in different scientific meetings and indexed scientific journals since the 90s. The original concept was described by Carlos Navarro in Perú and published by me in different scientific indexed journals and a textbook.

Team work is one of the generic skills that undergraduate students are expected to acquire by the time they graduate. Nevertheless, the traditional methodology used for assessing group projects suffered from several drawbacks which center mainly in the inaccurate assessment of each student’s contribution in the project, in addition to other shortcomings. In this paper we present a new technique in allocating topics in group projects, and in assessment of such projects, where the instructor – not the students in each group – divides each topic into several subtopics depending on the number of students allocated in each group.  In addition, the new technique obliges each student to separately upload his/her part in the project in his own account on turnitin, rather than uploading the whole project in one account as previously done. The results were superior compared to conventional projects as the students’ complaints of injustice were minimized, while marking accuracy was maximized.
