Abstract Presenting philosophy properly, in a way that is clear and accessible to our target audience, is of paramount importance. In this essay I draw on my dual experience as a scientist and a philosopher (as well as science and philosophy communicator) to arrive at some general recommendations for good practice. Specifically, I discuss why presentation matters, whether a bad presentation style is a valid criticism of a philosopher’s work, how we may adapt our message to the variety of communication media available today, and what, if any, is the relationship between how we present and how we conceive of philosophy itself.

Analyzing the data obtained, the author comes to the conclusion that the rhetorical ideal for representatives of generation Z is generally similar to Aristotelian and includes such qualities as openness, honesty, truthfulness, sincerity, professionalism, original presentation style, intellectuality, logical thinking and speech, creativity, sense of humor. Visuals are often used to enhance learning of scientific information. The recent emergence and popularity of comic-style instruction books for adults, such as the ‘manga guide to …’, shows the possibility of comic style visualisations for the communication of science with adults. This study investigates whether the addition and style of visual accompaniment of scientific information, as used in comic books, influences immediate and short-term fact recall in an adult audience. Participants ( n = 310 aged 18–79, 52% identified as female) were presented 20 general science facts in one of five styles: (1) text alone, (2) photo with text caption, (3) cartoon with text caption, (4) photo with explanatory agent and a speech bubble, (5) cartoon with explanatory agent and a speech bubble. Immediate recall, and confidence in that recall, was tested following a brief distractor. Participants indicated their preferred presentation style, and short-term recall was tested by a final quiz of all 20 facts. Overall, the most preferred presentation style was cartoon with explanatory agent and text in a speech bubble (26% preferred). There was no single most effective presentation style; there was no significant difference in immediate recall, short term recall or confidence in answers depending on whether the fact was presented as text, photo or cartoon, or the presence or absence of an explanatory agent. However, immediate recall was significantly better when preference was met ( p < 0.02). We found that the style of visual accompaniment of scientific information in accordance with the ‘manga guide to…’ format influenced immediate, but not short-term, fact recall in an adult audience when written English literacy, scientific literacy and non-verbal intelligence were taken into account. Short term recall of scientific facts may best be served by presenting facts in multiple styles, or enquiring about and then meeting participant preference for visual accompaniment.

This chapter provides a step-by-step guide to assist students through the process of preparing and delivering a moot argument with reference made to associated issues, such as conducting legal research and production of a skeleton argument. It highlights the aspects of mooting that students often find worrying or difficult, such as formulating a flowing argument, developing a confident oral presentation style, and dealing with judicial interventions. The chapter is a general guide that will be invaluable for preparation of any moot but a sample moot is used throughout as a source of specific explanation and illustration.

EDITORIAL Apart from being a journal that can publish scientific articles from all disciplines of science and technology, Aloha International Journal of Multidisciplinary Advancement (AIJMU) also opens opportunities for authors to publish scientific papers in various forms, both research and non-research articles; what is important is scientific and beneficial to the scientific community. One segment of the scientific community that is in dire need of important information from journals is diploma and undergraduate students. They really need basic level sciences, which can help them to complete their studies. Therefore, AIJMU invited lecturers and researchers to publish articles in tutorial form. The tutorial material is expected to be a new technique or procedure which is a scientific finding that needs to be introduced to the scientific community immediately, but it is also possible to publish other types of tutorials that are considered useful for the scientific community. As an article that is a practical guide, of course, it is likely that the size of the article is relatively long, so especially for tutorial articles, the number of words allowed is not limited, but it is hoped that the author uses a concise and simple presentation style. It is hoped that the tutorial articles published in this journal can really help practitioners, academics and students, who in turn can contribute to the development of science and technology in all disciplines of science and technology.
