                                                                  Chilli leaf curl virus (ChiLCV) is a serious problem for chilli production in Pakistan and India. In this study, fourteen different chilli lines / varieties were screened for their resistance/susceptibility towards ChiLCV in open field trials. Data of disease severity and disease incidence was recorded on weekly basis. Out of all varieties screened, Tatapuri Chilli and CH111 showed high susceptibility towards the chilli leaf curl disease. Talhari, CH 99, CH103, CH 106, CH107, CH108, CH109, GSL111 showed susceptible response whereas CBS1292 showed moderately susceptible response towards the disease. Only two cultivars Hybrid-46 and Hot Queen were found as moderately resistant. The screening experiment showed that most of the chilli varieties are susceptible to chilli leaf curl disease and resistance is lacking in local germplasm. Furthermore, three insecticides: Imidacloprid, Polo and Emamectin were tested for their efficacy for the management of disease and whitefly vector in field conditions at weekly intervals. Out of three insecticides, Polo gave best results as compared to Emamectin and Imidacloprid against chilli leaf curl disease and whitefly vector.

Leaf curl is a serious viral disease of chilli caused by a group of bigomoviruses dominated by chilli leaf curl virus (ChiLcv). With the aim to study the mode of inheritance of the ChiLcv disease resistance, a resistant genotype DLS-Sel.10 was crossed with a susceptible genotype Phule Mukta and F1, F2, B1 and B2 generations were developed. The parents along with the segregating generations were screened under natural conditions as well as challenged inoculation with viruliferous whiteflies carrying predominant ChiLcv.PCR amplification of viral genome-specific marker confirmed the presence of virus in all the tested plants however, only susceptible plants produced symptoms. The F1 plants showed susceptibility under both natural and challenged inoculation conditions indicating that the resistance is of recessive nature. On Chi-square test, it was found that susceptible and resistant plants of the two F2populations segregated in a ratio of 3 susceptible : 1 resistant plants and the B2 population derived from DLS-Sel.10/Phule Mukta//DLS-Sel.10 segregated in a ratio of 1 resistant : 1 susceptible plant suggesting that the Chilcv is goverened by a single recessive gene. The findings of this study will help in breeding for ChiLcv resistance in Chilli.

Confidor, an imidacloprid insecticide, was used in two applications at four rates (47.6, 71.4, 95.2, and 119 g a.i./ha) for indirectly controlling Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) in field plantings of tomato. This spray regimen was compared with standard applications of cypermethrins at 10- to 15-day intervals throughout the growing season. In three field trials, a combination of integrated pest management (IPM) practices and two applications of Confidor at the two highest rates immediately after planting and 6 weeks later, protected tomato plants against the disease until 12 weeks after sowing. All rates of Confidor reduced disease incidence compared with standard chemical control applied in an integrated strategy, and quantitative efficacy increased with increase of insecticide rate. In the three seasons, the mean incidence of TYLCV 12 weeks after sowing was 42.7% in plots not adopting IPM compared with 15.7% in those that did. Disease incidence was reduced by Confidor treatments to 2.2 to 17%. Confidor-treated plots consistently had higher yields than control plots, and the yields decreased with the decrease in the rate of Confidor application. Confidor offers several advantages over standard applications of cypermethrins to control TYLCV. When applied immediately after planting, its long-lasting systemic activity protected the crop against the disease during early stages of growth. In addition, it reduced the number of sprays and increased tomato yield.

In this study, the effect of a Kenyan strain of Sweetpotato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) and its interactions with Sweetpotato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) and Sweetpotato chlorotic stunt virus (SPCSV) on root yield was determined. Trials were performed during two seasons using varieties Kakamega and Ejumula and contrasting in their resistance to sweetpotato virus disease in a randomized complete block design with 16 treatments replicated three times. The treatments included plants graft inoculated with SPLCV, SPFMV, and SPCSV alone and in possible dual or triple combinations. Yield and yield-related parameters were evaluated at harvest. The results showed marked differences in the effect of SPLCV infection on the two varieties. Ejumula, which is highly susceptible to SPFMV and SPCSV, suffered no significant yield loss from SPLCV infection, whereas Kakamega, which is moderately resistant to SPFMV and SPCSV, suffered an average of 47% yield loss from SPLCV, despite only mild symptoms occurring in both varieties. These results highlight the variability in yield response to SPLCV between sweetpotato cultivars as well as a lack of correlation of SPLCV-related symptoms with yield reduction. Molecular identification of Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus on chili pepper in Nusa Penida Island. Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus (PYLCV) has been reported as caused yellow leaf curl disease in Bali Island since early 2012. Dominant symptoms of PYLCV infection in chili pepper were yellowing, leaf curl, yellow mosaic, and mottle. Bemisia tabaci, has been known to vector on the case yellow leaf curl disease. Observations on the Nusa Penida Island in 2020 showed symptoms such as yellow leaf curl disease, however, identification of PYLCV in Nusa Penida Island has not been studied. Molecular identification was conducted using polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis. Data collected in this study was disease symptoms and disease incidence. The results showed that dominant disease symptoms caused by virus from Nusa Penida were yellow mosaic, yellowing, and mottle. Universal DNA fragments of 912 bp were successfully amplified from 50 leaf samples using Begomovirus degenerate primers SPG 1 (5’-CCCCKGTGCGWRAATCCAT-3’) and SPG 2 (5’ATCCVAA YWTYCAGGGAGCT-3’). Sequence analysis showed that the isolate from Nusa Penida was a Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus with a 98–100% homology with several reference isolates.

Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 39(1): 79-83. Tomato is an important vegetable crop, belongs to the family Solanaceae and is the second most consumed vegetable following potatoes. The tomato crop is grown all over the world in both summer and winter seasons, and plant viruses are a major threat to tomato production. Among these viruses, tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV) causes considerable yield loss to tomato crop. This virus is transmitted by a whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) vector. In this study, the effect of TLCV infection, on the following tomato growth and yield parameters, was evaluated: plant leaf number and area, plant biomass, plant height, root length, and plant stem diameter and yield. Tomato plants were transplanted in wellprepared plots with 4 replications. The control group was covered with polyethene bag to avoid whitefly infestation. Plants were scored on the 15th and 30th day after inoculation and TLCV disease severity was recorded. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed the significant differences between the healthy and infected tomato plants. Moreover, growth and yield parameters were reduced with the increase in disease incidence, disease severity and whitefly infestation. Disease severity was increased with the increase in temperature during the growing season. It can be concluded from this study that TLCV significantly affects growth and yield of the tomato crop.
