Exploring drug–target interactions by biomedical experiments requires a lot of human, financial, and material resources. To save time and cost to meet the needs of the present generation, machine learning methods have been introduced into the prediction of drug–target interactions. The large amount of available drug and target data in existing databases, the evolving and innovative computer technologies, and the inherent characteristics of various types of machine learning have made machine learning techniques the mainstream method for drug–target interaction prediction research. In this review, details of the specific applications of machine learning in drug–target interaction prediction are summarized, the characteristics of each algorithm are analyzed, and the issues that need to be further addressed and explored for future research are discussed. The aim of this review is to provide a sound basis for the construction of high-performance models.

Operating condition detection and fault diagnosis are very important for reliable operation of reciprocating compressors. Machine learning is one of the most powerful tools in this field. However, there are very few comprehensive reviews which summarize the current research of machine learning in monitoring reciprocating compressor operating condition and fault diagnosis. In this paper, the recent application of machine learning techniques in reciprocating compressor fault diagnosis is reviewed. The advantages and challenges in the detection process, based on three main monitoring parameters in practical applications, are discussed. Future research direction and development are proposed.

The objective of the present chapter is to highlight applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders. The proposed approach aims at recognizing behavioral traits and other cognitive aspects. The availability of numerous data and high processing power, such as graphic processing units (GPUs) or cloud computing, enabled the study of micro-patterns hundreds of times faster compared to manual analysis. AI, being a new technological breakthrough, enables study of human behavior patterns, which are hidden in millions of micro-patterns originating from human actions, reactions, and gestures. The chapter will also focus on the challenges in existing machine learning techniques and the best possible solution addressing those problems. In the future, more AI-based expert systems can enhance the accuracy of the diagnosis and prognosis process.

Sleep disorders are related to many different diseases, and they could have a significant impact in patients' health, causing an economic impact to the society and to the national health systems. In the United States, according to information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, those disorders are affecting 50-70 million in the adult population. Sleep disorders are causing annually around 40,000 deaths due to cardiovascular problems, and they cost the health system more than 16 billion. In other countries, such as in Spain, those disorders affect up to 48% of the adult population. The main objective of this chapter is to review and evaluate the different machine learning techniques utilized by researchers and medical professionals to identify, assess, and characterize sleep disorders. Moreover, some future research directions are proposed considering the evaluated area.

Abstract Machine learning is a branch of computer science that has the potential to transform epidemiologic sciences. Amid a growing focus on “Big Data,” it offers epidemiologists new tools to tackle problems for which classical methods are not well-suited. In order to critically evaluate the value of integrating machine learning algorithms and existing methods, however, it is essential to address language and technical barriers between the two fields that can make it difficult for epidemiologists to read and assess machine learning studies. Here, we provide an overview of the concepts and terminology used in machine learning literature, which encompasses a diverse set of tools with goals ranging from prediction to classification to clustering. We provide a brief introduction to 5 common machine learning algorithms and 4 ensemble-based approaches. We then summarize epidemiologic applications of machine learning techniques in the published literature. We recommend approaches to incorporate machine learning in epidemiologic research and discuss opportunities and challenges for integrating machine learning and existing epidemiologic research methods.

Background:The identification of drug-target interactions is a crucial issue in drug discovery. In recent years, researchers have made great efforts on the drug-target interaction predictions, and developed databases, software and computational methods. Results:In the paper, we review the recent advances in machine learning-based drug-target interaction prediction. First, we briefly introduce the datasets and data, and summarize features for drugs and targets which can be extracted from different data. Since drug-drug similarity and target-target similarity are important for many machine learning prediction models, we introduce how to calculate similarities based on data or features. Different machine learningbased drug-target interaction prediction methods can be proposed by using different features or information. Thus, we summarize, analyze and compare different machine learning-based prediction methods. Conclusion:This study provides the guide to the development of computational methods for the drug-target interaction prediction.
