Oscillatory Neural Networks (ONNs) are currently arousing interest in the research community for their potential to implement very fast, ultra-low-power computing tasks by exploiting specific emerging technologies. From the architectural point of view, ONNs are based on the synchronization of oscillatory neurons in cognitive processing, as occurs in the human brain. As emerging technologies, VO2 and memristive devices show promising potential for the efficient implementation of ONNs. Abundant literature is now becoming available pertaining to the study and building of ONNs based on VO2 devices and resistive coupling, such as memristors. One drawback of direct resistive coupling is that physical resistances cannot be negative, but from the architectural and computational perspective this would be a powerful advantage when interconnecting weights in ONNs. Here we solve the problem by proposing a hardware implementation technique based on differential oscillatory neurons for ONNs (DONNs) with VO2-based oscillators and memristor-bridge circuits. Each differential oscillatory neuron is made of a pair of VO2 oscillators operating in anti-phase. This way, the neurons provide a pair of differential output signals in opposite phase. The memristor-bridge circuit is used as an adjustable coupling function that is compatible with differential structures and capable of providing both positive and negative weights. By combining differential oscillatory neurons and memristor-bridge circuits, we propose the hardware implementation of a fully connected differential ONN (DONN) and use it as an associative memory. The standard Hebbian rule is used for training, and the weights are then mapped to the memristor-bridge circuit through a proposed mapping rule. The paper also introduces some functional and hardware specifications to evaluate the design. Evaluation is performed by circuit-level electrical simulations and shows that the retrieval accuracy of the proposed design is comparable to that of classic Hopfield Neural Networks.

Recently models of neural networks that can directly deal with complex numbers, complex-valued neural networks, have been proposed and several studies on their abilities of information processing have been done. Furthermore models of neural networks that can deal with quaternion numbers, which is the extension of complex numbers, have also been proposed. However they are all multilayer quaternion neural networks. This paper proposes models of fully connected recurrent quaternion neural networks, Hopfield-type quaternion neural networks. Since quaternion numbers are non-commutative on multiplication, some different models can be considered. We investigate dynamics of these proposed models from the point of view of the existence of an energy function and derive their conditions for existence.

AbstractBackgroundDeep neural networks have revolutionised machine learning, with unparalleled performance in object classification. However, in brain imaging (e.g. fMRI), the direct application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to decoding subject states or perception from imaging data seems impractical given the scarcity of available data.New methodIn this work we propose a robust method to transfer information from deep learning (DL) features to brain fMRI data with the goal of decoding. By adopting Reduced Rank Regression with Ridge Regularisation we establish a multivariate link between imaging data and the fully connected layer (fc7) of a CNN. We exploit the reconstructed fc7 features by performing an object image classification task on two datasets: one of the largest fMRI databases, taken from different scanners from more than two hundred subjects watching different movie clips, and another with fMRI data taken while watching static images,ResultsThe fc7 features could be significantly reconstructed from the imaging data, and led to significant decoding performance.Comparison with existing methodsThe decoding based on reconstructed fc7 outperformed the decoding based on imaging data alone.ConclusionIn this work we show how to improve fMRI-based decoding benefiting from the mapping between functional data and CNN features. The potential advantage of the proposed method is twofold: the extraction of stimuli representations by means of an automatic procedure (unsupervised) and the embedding of high-dimensional neuroimaging data onto a space designed for visual object discrimination, leading to a more manageable space from dimensionality point of view.

AbstractThis article introduces a method for realizing the Gaussian activation function of radial-basis (RBF) neural networks with their hardware implementation on field-programmable gaits area (FPGAs). The results of modeling of the Gaussian function on FPGA chips of different families have been presented. RBF neural networks of various topologies have been synthesized and investigated. The hardware component implemented by this algorithm is an RBF neural network with four neurons of the latent layer and one neuron with a sigmoid activation function on an FPGA using 16-bit numbers with a fixed point, which took 1193 logic matrix gate (LUTs—LookUpTable). Each hidden layer neuron of the RBF network is designed on an FPGA as a separate computing unit. The speed as a total delay of the combination scheme of the block RBF network was 101.579 ns. The implementation of the Gaussian activation functions of the hidden layer of the RBF network occupies 106 LUTs, and the speed of the Gaussian activation functions is 29.33 ns. The absolute error is ± 0.005. The Spartan 3 family of chips for modeling has been used to get these results. Modeling on chips of other series has been also introduced in the article. RBF neural networks of various topologies have been synthesized and investigated. Hardware implementation of RBF neural networks with such speed allows them to be used in real-time control systems for high-speed objects.

Damage identification of composite structures is a major ongoing challenge for a secure operational life-cycle due to the complex, gradual damage behaviour of composite materials. Especially for composite rotors in aero-engines and wind-turbines, a cost-intensive maintenance service has to be performed in order to avoid critical failure. A major advantage of composite structures is that they are able to safely operate after damage initiation and under ongoing damage propagation. Therefore, a robust, efficient diagnostic damage identification method would allow monitoring the damage process with intervention occurring only when necessary. This study investigates the structural vibration response of composite rotors by applying machine learning methods and the ability to identify, localise and quantify the present damage. To this end, multiple fully connected neural networks and convolutional neural networks were trained on vibration response spectra from damaged composite rotors with barely visible damage, mostly matrix cracks and local delaminations using dimensionality reduction and data augmentation. A databank containing 720 simulated test cases with different damage states is used as a basis for the generation of multiple data sets. The trained models are tested using k-fold cross validation and they are evaluated based on the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. Convolutional neural networks perform slightly better providing a performance accuracy of up to 99.3% for the damage localisation and quantification.

Mental stress can lead to traffic accidents by reducing a driver’s concentration or increasing fatigue while driving. In recent years, demand for methods to detect drivers’ stress in advance to prevent dangerous situations increased. Thus, we propose a novel method for detecting driving stress using nonlinear representations of short-term (30 s or less) physiological signals for multimodal convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Specifically, from hand/foot galvanic skin response (HGSR, FGSR) and heart rate (HR) short-term input signals, first, we generate corresponding two-dimensional nonlinear representations called continuous recurrence plots (Cont-RPs). Second, from the Cont-RPs, we use multimodal CNNs to automatically extract FGSR, HGSR, and HR signal representative features that can effectively differentiate between stressed and relaxed states. Lastly, we concatenate the three extracted features into one integrated representation vector, which we feed to a fully connected layer to perform classification. For the evaluation, we use a public stress dataset collected from actual driving environments. Experimental results show that the proposed method demonstrates superior performance for 30-s signals, with an overall accuracy of 95.67%, an approximately 2.5–3% improvement compared with that of previous works. Additionally, for 10-s signals, the proposed method achieves 92.33% classification accuracy, which is similar to or better than the performance of other methods using long-term signals (over 100 s).

ABSTRACT We use deep learning to predict surface-to-borehole Fourier amplification functions (AFs) from discretized shear-wave velocity profiles. Specifically, we train a fully connected neural network and a convolutional neural network using mean AFs observed at ∼600 KiK-net vertical array sites. Compared with predictions based on theoretical SH 1D amplifications, the neural network (NN) results in up to 50% reduction of the mean squared log error between predictions and observations at sites not used for training. In the future, NNs may lead to a purely data-driven prediction of site response that is independent of proxies or simplifying assumptions.

Modern approaches in deep neural networks have a number of issues related to the learning process and computational costs. This article considers the architecture grounded on an alternative approach to the basic unit of the neural network. This approach achieves optimization in the calculations and gives rise to an alternative way to solve the problems of the vanishing and exploding gradient. The main issue of the article is the usage of the deep stacked neo-fuzzy system, which uses a generalized neo-fuzzy neuron to optimize the learning process. This approach is non-standard from a theoretical point of view, so the paper presents the necessary mathematical calculations and describes all the intricacies of using this architecture from a practical point of view. From a theoretical point, the network learning process is fully disclosed. Derived all necessary calculations for the use of the backpropagation algorithm for network training. A feature of the network is the rapid calculation of the derivative for the activation functions of neurons. This is achieved through the use of fuzzy membership functions. The paper shows that the derivative of such function is a constant, and this is a reason for the statement of increasing in the optimization rate in comparison with neural networks which use neurons with more common activation functions (ReLU, sigmoid). The paper highlights the main points that can be improved in further theoretical developments on this topic. In general, these issues are related to the calculation of the activation function. The proposed methods cope with these points and allow approximation using the network, but the authors already have theoretical justifications for improving the speed and approximation properties of the network. The results of the comparison of the proposed network with standard neural network architectures are shown
