Introduction: Body weight perception (BWP) directly determines weight management behaviors. Although child neglect is a well-established risk factor for managing body weight, little is known about its association with the accuracy of BWP. This study aimed to assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between child neglect and BWP accuracy in primary schoolchildren, and explore how these differ based on the sex of the child.Methods: The sample included 1,063 primary schoolchildren (557 boys and 506 girls, aged 8–10 years) from a two-wave observational study between 2018 and 2019 in Wuhan, China. Child neglect and BWP were investigated using self-administered questionnaires. The accuracy of BWP was defined by comparing the BWP and actual body weight, and it was categorized into three groups—consistent, underestimated, and overestimated. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted with fitting child neglect as the independent variable and the accuracy of BWP as the dependent variable.Results: The prevalence of weight misperception was ~44% at baseline (underestimation 40%; overestimation 4%) in Chinese primary schoolchildren. In the cross-sectional analysis, children with a higher level of neglect were more likely to misperceive their body weight. Moreover, there was an apparent sex-related difference that boys who experienced a higher level of neglect significantly reported more underestimation, while girls reported more overestimation. There was no significant longitudinal association between child neglect and the change in BWP accuracy.Conclusions: This study revealed that a higher level of neglect was significantly associated with underestimated BWP in boys and overestimated BWP in girls. The mechanisms of sex-related difference and whether child neglect is involved in the change in BWP, merit further investigations.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is associated with many physical changes, it is described as a period when body weight changes and is likely to become worrying for many adolescents. AIM: This study aims to evaluate associations between body weight perception and body mass index (BMI) among a population of female adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted from February to May 2017 among 12–19 years olds adolescents (n = 415) from high and middle school. BMI for age percentiles was calculated using the WHO AnthroPlus. Body weight perception was determined using an anonymous questionnaire. RESULTS: The prevalence of misconception of body weight was 60%. The prevalence of misconception was positively associated with the participants age (p < 0.001), the occurrence of menarche (p < 0.05), the increasing of BMI (p < 0.001), and with habits diet satisfaction (p < 0.05). Overweighed participants and who’s with normal weight were more likely to perceive their weight incorrectly (p < 0.05). Furthermore, approximately 2.9% of participants underestimated their true body weight and 57.1% overestimated their weight. However, all participants with underweight had correctly perceived their body weight. Logistic regression showed that predictor factors of misconception weight were participant’s age and BMI. CONCLUSION: It is recommended to improve healthy programs in schools aimed at preventing body weight perception and eating problems among adolescents.

Abstract Background To explored associations of body weight perception with body mass index and quality of life among nurses.Methods A total of 456 nurses (18-55 years old) were surveyed in a cross-sectional study in a hospital of Nantong City, China. Data on social-demographic characteristics, body mass index, body weight perception and quality of life were collected. Results Our study showed that 40.6% of nurses misconception their weight status. Married nurses were more likely than unmarried to underestimate their weight. Significant disparity in mental health, vitality and mental component summary scores were found in nursers who underestimate their weight compared to those correctly perceived or over or who overestimate their weight. Conclusion Interventions should be designed to help nurse address body weight status misconception, thereby contributing to label themselves and patients as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese correctly, and in turn, giving reasonable eating habits and physical activities health education.

AbstractObjectivesTo evaluate body size preference, body weight perception and their relationship with actual weight in two migrant groups of non-Western origin, Turks and Moroccans; additionally, to study the association between body size preference and acculturation.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingAmsterdam, The Netherlands.Subjects and methodsMales and females (18–30 years) were randomly selected from the population registry (n 451); participants, or at least one of their parents, were born in Turkey or Morocco. Body size preference was assessed using seven silhouette drawings and body weight perception was assessed by asking participants’ opinion of own weight. Acculturation variables were generation status and two scale measures, cultural orientation and social contacts.ResultsParticipants showed preference for a thin body size. The discrepancy between ideal and current size was significant in women but not men (P < 0·001). Perceived current body size was correlated with BMI (Spearman’s correlation coefficient 0·60, P < 0·001 (men) and 0·73, P < 0·001 (women)). Among overweight participants (BMI = 25·0–29·9 kg/m2), 63–82 % of men and 35 % of women perceived themselves as ‘average’. Paying attention to own body weight was associated with a discrepancy between ideal and current size among women and with perceiving oneself as ‘overweight’ among men. Body size preference was not significantly associated with the three acculturation variables.ConclusionWe did not observe a preference for large body sizes in these two non-Western migrant groups. Similar to Western populations, most women wished to be thinner than they were. This was not the case among men, the majority of whom were also unaware of being overweight.

Abstract Objectives Research shows that students in healthcare fields have distorted perceptions of their bodies, specifically regarding their weight status. Nutrition majors are important to consider, given their future careers require them to assess others’ weight statuses and provide relevant diet recommendations. The main aims of this secondary analysis were to compare accuracy of nutrition versus non-nutrition majors’ body weight perception to their measured body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BFP). It was hypothesized that nutrition majors will more accurately classify their weight relative to their BMI and BFP compared to non-nutrition majors due to their knowledge of weight classifications. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 188 non-nutrition (77% female; BMI 24.14 ± 5.46; BFP 26.30 ± 9.70) and 108 nutrition (83% female; BMI 23.78 ± 3.75; BFP 25.45 ± 8.39) majors enrolled in a general nutrition class and completed a nutrition assessment survey that included the multiple-choice question: “How would YOU describe your current weight?”. Categories were underweight, healthy weight, or overweight. Height was measured by a calibrated stadiometer. Weight and body composition were assessed by In-Body 770. BMI and BFP were categorized as underweight, healthy weight, or overweight according to the In-Body reference guidelines. Difference in accuracy of nutrition versus non-nutrition majors’ body weight perceptions were analyzed by independent t-tests. Data are expressed as means ± standard deviations. Results Of the 296 students, 28% misperceived their weight status relative to BMI and 40% misperceived their weight status relative to BFP. Of the 28%, 55 students perceived their weight as lower than (30% nutrition) and 25 students perceived their weight as higher than (52% nutrition) their measured BMI. Of the 40%, 86 students perceived their weight as lower than (24% nutrition) and 31 students perceived their weight as higher than (48% nutrition) their measured BFP. Nutrition majors had more accurate perceptions of their weight status relative to measured BFP than non-majors (−0.06 ± 0.58; −.27 ± 0.62; P = 0.004). Conclusions When perceptions were inaccurate, most students perceived themselves as a healthier weight than their measured BMI and BFP indicated. Nutrition majors’ perceptions relative to BFP were more accurate than non-majors. Funding Sources None.

Perception of body weight has been recognized as an important barrier in the adoption of healthy lifestyles. Several factors affect perception of body weight, but the outcomes have been varied. This study aimed to study the perception and misperception of body weight and its association with the measured body mass index. A clinic-based cross-sectional study was done in the clinic using systematic sampling. Data were collected by using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of the sociodemographic profile, body weight perception question adopted from Weight Management Questionnaire and Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) 1991-2017. The prevalence of body weight misperception in the sample population was 58.6%. Most of the respondents were overweight (33.9%) and obese (33.9%). Respondents aged 25 years and older were 2.98 times more likely to have misperception compared with other age groups (95% CI: 1.21-3.19, P = .006). Divorced respondents were 4.70 times more likely to have body misperception compared with married respondents (95% CI 1.44-15.32, P = 0.01). This study showed that misperception of body weight could be influenced by reversible factors and measured body mass index. Hence, the rectification of these misperceptions is important in the clinical setting especially in these vulnerable groups of respondents.

Background: Adolescence (10-19 year) is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood. The factor that determines how adolescents feel about themselves is ‘Body image’. The objective of study is to understand body weight perception of adolescents.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the two Pre- University colleges with a sample of 330 adolescents. Pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire was used to elicit the required information.Results: 13 % of study participants underestimated their body weight and 11.2 % over estimated their body weight. 82.7% of study subjects perceived themselves as normal weight for their age and height, 7.6% perceived as underweight and 9.7% perceived as overweight/obese.Conclusion: Inappropriate perceptions about body weight leads to increase in the problems related to overweight/obesity. Lack of knowledge about and access to growth charts has probably made difficult for adolescents to evaluate their weight status objectively. Introduction: Body weight perception is an important underlying psychological factor associated with body weight. Overemphasis on thinness among adolescents can lead to unhealthy dieting practices and eating disorders, whereas underestimation of body weight may increase risk of the development of overweight and obesity. This study measured the agreement between body weight perception and body weight status (BMI) among late adolescents in Kuantan. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from April to August 2018 among 418 adolescents of six higher learning institutions in Kuantan; aged 17-19 years old. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Self-administered, validated questionnaires; Figure Rating Scale (FRS) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) were used. The strength of agreement between BMI and body weight perception was examined using Kappa statistics. Results: Overall, 37.6% of total participants misjudged their own body weight. Of particular note, 51.9% of real underweight participants misperceived body weight as normal weight and overweight while 47.2% of obese participants incorrectly perceived their body weight as overweight. The agreement between body weight perception and body mass index was poor (k=-0.09, p< 0.01). The discrepancy more marked in male (k = -0.11, p<0.01). Conclusions: Body weight perception was not in agreement with actual weight in late adolescents. Accurate body weight perception is an important factor in late adolescent’s weight management behaviour. More effort should be done in order to correct misperception among this age group for their health benefits.
