To better understand the wake effects at low Reynolds numbers, large-eddy simulations of a 50% reaction low-pressure turbine stage and a linear cascade with two different bar wake generators were carried out for a chord Reynolds number of 50,000. For the chosen front-loaded high-lift airfoil, the endwall structures are stronger than for more traditional mid-loaded moderate-lift airfoils. By comparing the 50% reaction stage results with the bar wake generator results, insight is gained into the effect of the three-dimensional wake components on the downstream flow field.For the cases with bar wake generator, the endwall boundary layer is growing faster because of the relative motion of the endwall with respect to the freestream. The half-width of the wake is approximately matched for the larger one of the two considered bar wake generators. To improve the quality of the phase-averaged flow fields, the proper orthogonal decomposition was employed as a filter to remove the low-energy unsteady flow field content. Both the mean flow and filtered phase-averaged flow fields were analyzed in detail. Visualizations of the phase-averaged flow field reveal a periodic suppression of the laminar suction side separation from the downstream airfoil even for the smaller bar wake generator. The passage vortex is entirely suppressed for the 50% reaction stage and for the larger bar wake generator. Furthermore, the phase-averaged data for the 50% reaction stage reveal a new longitudinal flow structure that is traced back to near-wall wake vorticity. This flow structure is missing for the bar wake generator cases.

In a joint project between the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion Systems (ILA) and MTU Aero Engines, a two-stage low pressure turbine is tested at design and strong off-design conditions. The experimental data taken in the Altitude Test Facility (ATF) aims to study the effect of positive and negative incidence of the second stator vane. A detailed insight and understanding of the blade row interactions at these regimes is sought. Steady and time-resolved pressure measurements on the airfoil as well as inlet and outlet hot-film traverses at identical Reynolds number are performed for the midspan streamline. The results are compared with unsteady multistage computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions. Simulations agree well with the experimental data and allow detailed insights in the time-resolved flow-field. Airfoil pressure field responses are found to increase with positive incidence whereas at negative incidence the magnitude remains unchanged. Different pressure to suction side (SS) phasing is observed for the studied regimes. The assessment of unsteady blade forces reveals that changes in unsteady lift are minor compared to changes in axial force components. These increase with increasing positive incidence. The wake-interactions are predominating the blade responses in all regimes. For the positive incidence conditions, vane 1 passage vortex fluid is involved in the midspan passage interaction, leading to a more distorted three-dimensional (3D) flow field.

Blade-to-blade interactions in a low-pressure turbine (LPT) were investigated using highly resolved compressible large eddy simulations (LESs). For a realistic setup, a stator and rotor configuration with profiles typical of LPTs was used. Simulations were conducted with an in-house solver varying the gap size between stator and rotor from 21.5% to 43% rotor chord. To investigate the effect of the gap size on the prevailing loss mechanisms, a loss breakdown was conducted. It was found that in the large gap (LG) size case, the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) levels of the stator wake close to the rotor leading edge were only one third of those in the small gap (SG) case, due to the longer distance of constant area mixing. The small time-averaged suction side separation on the blade, found in the LG case, disappeared in the SG calculations, confirming how stronger wakes can keep the boundary layer attached. The higher intensity wake impinging on the blade, however, did not affect the time-averaged losses calculated using the control volume approach of Denton. On the other hand, losses computed by taking cross sections upstream and downstream of the blade revealed a greater distortion loss generated by the stator wakes in the SG case. Despite the suction side separation suppression, the SG case gave higher losses overall due to the incoming wake turbulent kinetic energy amplification along the blade passage.

Time-accurate numerical simulations were conducted on the aft-loaded L1A low pressure turbine airfoil at a Reynolds number of 22,000 (based on inlet velocity magnitude and axial chord length). This flow condition produces a non-reattaching laminar separation zone on the airfoil suction surface. The numerical code TURBO is used to simulate this flow field as an Implicit Large Eddy Simulation. Generally good agreement was found when compared to experimental time-averaged and instantaneous flow measurements. The numerical separation zone is slightly larger than that in the experiments, though integrated wake loss values improved from RANS-based simulations. Instantaneous snapshots of the numerical flow field showed the Kelvin Helmholtz instability forming in the separated shear layer and a large-scale vortex shedding pattern at the airfoil trailing edge. These features were observed in the experiments with similar sizes and vorticity levels. Power spectral density analyses revealed a global passage oscillation in the numerics that was not observed experimentally. This oscillation was most likely a primary resonant frequency of the numerical domain.

Boundary layer separation, transition and reattachment have been studied experimentally in a low-pressure turbine cascade. Cases with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 (based on suction surface length and exit velocity) have been considered under low free-stream turbulence conditions. Mean and fluctuating velocity profiles and turbulence spectra are presented for streamwise locations along the suction side of one airfoil and in the wake downstream of the airfoils. Hot film gages on the suction side surface of the airfoil are used to measure the fluctuation level and the spectra of the fluctuations on the surface. Higher Re moves transition upstream. Transition is initiated in the shear layer over the separation bubble and leads to boundary layer reattachment. Peak frequencies in the boundary layer spectra match those found in similar cases in the literature, indicating that the important frequencies may be predictable. Spectra in the wake downstream of the airfoils were similar to the spectra in the boundary layer near the trailing edge of the airfoil. Comparisons to the literature indicate that small but measurable differences in the spectra of the low free-stream turbulence can have a significant effect on boundary layer reattachment.

For low-pressure turbine, the unsteady disturbances are dominated by relative motions between rotors and stators and the unsteady flow is closely associated with aerodynamic efficiency of low-pressure turbine and engine performance. One of its most important manifestations is the boundary layer separation on the turbine blades by the passing wakes produced by upstream rows of blades. Hence, accurate prediction of the flow physics at low Reynolds number conditions is required to effectively implement flow control techniques which can help mitigate separation induced losses. The present paper concentrates on simulations for boundary layer separation of low-pressure turbine cascade under periodic wakes. In this paper, a multiblock computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of compressible N-S equations is developed for predicting the phenomenon of boundary layer separation, transition and reattachment using large eddy simulation (LES) in the field of turbomachinery. The large-scale structures can be directly obtained from the solution of the filtered Naiver-Strokes equations and the small-scale structures are modeled by dynamic subgrid-scale model of turbulence. Firstly, unsteady boundary layer separation on a flat plate with adverse pressure gradient is simulated under periodic inflow. The time-averaged field, the phase-averaged field and the instantaneous flow field are presented and analyzed. The separation bubble becomes unstable and the location of transition moves back and forth due to vortex shedding. Secondly, a stator of turbomachinery which is influenced by wakes periodically passing is simulated. The results of the numerical simulations are discussed and compared with experimental data. For the instantaneous flow field, it seems that the spanwise vortices induced by upstream wakes are the primary reason of the initial roll-up of the shear layer and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability plays an important role in the transition to turbulence which is observed in the separated flow.

Previous work has shown that low-stagger contouring near the endwall of a nominally high-lift and high-stagger angle front-loaded low-pressure turbine (LPT) airfoil is successful in reducing endwall loss by limiting the development and migration of low momentum fluid associated with secondary flow structures. The design modification that leads to loss reduction in that study was determined from an intuitive approach based on the premise that reducing flow separation near the endwall will lead to reduced loss production. Those authors also relied heavily upon Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) based computational tools. Due to uncertainties inherent in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions, there is little confidence that the authors actually achieved true minimum loss. Despite recent advances in computing capability, turbulence modeling remains a shortcoming of modern design tools. As a contribution to overcoming this problem, this paper offers a three-dimensional (3D) view of the developing mean flow, total pressure, and turbulence fields that gave rise to the loss reduction of the airfoil mentioned above. Experiments are conducted in a linear cascade with aspect ratio of 3.5 and Re = 100,000. The results are derived from stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) and total pressure measurements inside the passage. Overall, the loss reduction correlates strongly with reduced turbulence production. The aim of this paper is to provide readers with a realistic view of mean flow and turbulence development that include all the components of the Reynolds stress tensor to assess, at least qualitatively, the validity of high fidelity computational tools used to calculate turbine flows.

The separation and reattachment of suction surface boundary layer in a low pressure turbine is characterized using large-eddy simulation at Ress = 69000 based on inlet velocity and suction surface length. Favorable comparisons are drawn with experiments using a high pass filtered Smagorinsky model for sub-grid scales. The onset of time mean separation is at s/so = 0.61 and reattachment at s/so = 0.81, extending over 20% of the suction surface. The boundary layer is convectively unstable with a maximum reverse flow velocity of about 13% of freestream. The breakdown to turbulence occurs over a very short distance of suction surface and is followed by reattachment. Turbulence near the bubble is further characterized using anisotropy invariant mapping and time orthogonal decomposition diagnostics. Particularly the vortex shedding and shear layer flapping phenomena are addressed. On the suction side, dominant hairpin structures near the transitional and turbulent flow regime are observed. The hairpin vortices are carried by the freestream even downstream of the trailing edge of the blade with a possibility of reaching the next stage. Longitudinal streaks that evolve from the breakdown of hairpin vortices formed near the leading edge are observed on the pressure surface.

The hypothesis, posed in Part I [1], that excessive endwall loss of high lift low pressure turbine (LPT) airfoils is due to the influence of high stagger angles on the endwall pressure distribution and not front-loading is evaluated in a linear cascade at Re = 100,000 using both experimental and computational studies. A nominally high lift and high stagger angle front-loaded profile (L2F) with aspect ratio 3.5 is contoured at the endwall to reduce the stagger angle while maintaining the front loading. The contouring process effectively generates a fillet at the endwall, so the resulting airfoil is referred to as L2F-EF (Endwall Fillet). Although referred to as a fillet, this profile contouring process is novel in that it is designed to isolate the effect of stagger angle on endwall loss. Total pressure loss measurements downstream of the blade row indicate that the use of the lower stagger angle at the endwall reduces mixed out mass averaged endwall and passage losses approximately 23% and 10% respectively. This is in good agreement with computational results used to design the contour which predict 18% and 7% loss reductions. The endwall flow field of the L2F and L2F-EF models is measured using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) in the passage. These data are used to quantify changes in the endwall flow field due to the contouring. PIV results show that this loss reduction is characterized by reduced inlet boundary layer separation as well as a change in strength and location of the suction side horseshoe vortex (SHV) and passage vortex (PV). The endwall profile contouring also produces a reduction in all terms of the Reynolds stress tensor consistent with a decrease in deformation work and overall flow unsteadiness. These results confirm that the stagger angle has a significant effect on high-lift front-loaded LPT endwall loss. Low stagger profiling is successful in reducing endwall loss by limiting the development and migration of the low momentum fluid associated with the SHV and PV interaction.

In a cooperative project between the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion Systems and MTU Aero Engines GmbH, a two-stage low pressure turbine with integrated 3D airfoil and endwall contouring is tested. The experimental data taken in the altitude test-facility study the effect of high incidence in off-design operation. Steady measurements are covering a wide range of Reynolds numbers between 40,000 and 180,000. The results are compared with steady multistage CFD predictions with a focus on the stator rows. A first unsteady simulation is taken into account as well. The CFD simulations include leakage flow paths with disk cavities modeled. Compared to design operation the extreme off-design high-incidence conditions lead to a different flow-field Reynolds number sensitivity. Airfoil lift data reveals changing incidence with Reynolds number of the second stage. Increased leading edge loading of the second vane indicates a strong cross channel pressure gradient in the second stage leading to larger secondary flow regions and a more three-dimensional flow-field. Global characteristics and area traverse data of the second vane are discussed. The unsteady CFD approach indicates improvement in the numerical prediction of the predominating flow-field.
