The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is widely used in many fields. When the unscented Kalman filter is combined with the H∞ filter (HF), the obtained unscented H∞ filtering (UHF) is very suitable for state estimation of nonlinear non-Gaussian systems. However, the application of state estimation is often limited by physical laws and mathematical models on some occasions. The standard unscented H∞ filtering always performs poorly under this situation. To solve this problem, this paper improves the UHF algorithm based on state constraints and studies the UHF algorithm based on the projection method. The standard UHF sigma points that violate the state constraints are projected onto the constraint boundary. Firstly, the paper gives a broad overview of H∞ filtering and unscented H∞ filtering, then addresses the issue of how to add constraints using the UHF approach, and finally, the new method is tested and evaluated by the gas-phase reversible reaction and the State of Charge (SOC) estimation examples. Simulation results show the validity and feasibility of the state-constrained UHF algorithm.

As an effective computing technique, Kalman filter (KF) currently plays an important role in state of charge (SOC) estimation in battery management systems (BMS). However, the traditional KF with mean square error (MSE) loss faces some difficulties in handling the presence of non-Gaussian noise in the system. To ensure higher estimation accuracy under this condition, a robust SOC approach using correntropy unscented KF (CUKF) filter is proposed in this paper. The new approach was developed by replacing the MSE in traditional UKF with correntropy loss. As a robust estimation method, CUKF enables the estimate process to be achieved with stable and lower estimation error performance. To further improve the performance of CUKF, an adaptive update strategy of the process and measurement error covariance matrices was introduced into CUKF to design an adaptive CUKF (ACUKF). Experiment results showed that the proposed ACUKF-based SOC estimation method could achieve accurate estimate compared to CUKF, UKF, and adaptive UKF on real measurement data in the presence of non-Gaussian system noises.

Abstract In the battery thermal management system (BMS), the state of charge (SOC) is a very influential factor, which can prevent overcharge and over-discharge of the lithium-ion battery (LIB). This paper proposed a battery modeling and online battery parameter identification method based on the Thevenin equivalent circuit model (ECM) and recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm. The proposed model proved to have high accuracy. The error between the ECM terminal voltage value and the actual value basically fluctuates between ±0.1V. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm were applied to estimate the SOC of the battery based on the proposed model. The SOC experimental results obtained under dynamic stress test (DST), federal urban driving schedule (FUDS), and US06 cycle conditions were analyzed. The maximum deviation of the SOC based on EKF was 1.4112%~2.5988%, and the maximum deviation of the SOC based on UKF was 0.3172%~0.3388%. The SOC estimation method based on UKF and RLS provides a smaller deviation and better adaptability in different working conditions, which makes it more implementable in a real-world automobile application.

The particle filter method is a basic tool for inference on nonlinear partially observed Markov process models. Recently, it has been applied to solve constrained nonlinear filtering problems. Incorporating constraints could improve the state estimation performance compared to unconstrained state estimation. This paper introduces an iterative truncated unscented particle filter, which provides a state estimation method with inequality constraints. In this method, the proposal distribution is generated by an iterative unscented Kalman filter that is supplemented with a designed truncation method to satisfy the constraints. The detailed iterative unscented Kalman filter and truncation method is provided and incorporated into the particle filter framework. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to other similar algorithms.

This paper proposes a state estimation method for a sampled-data descriptor system by the Kalman filtering method. The sampled-data descriptor system is firstly discretized to obtain a discrete-time nonsingular model. Based on the discretized nonsingular system, a strong tracking unscented Kalman filter (STUKF) algorithm is designed for the state estimation. Then, a defined suboptimal fading factor is proposed and added to the prediction covariance for decreasing the weight of the prior knowledge on the conventional UKF filtering solution. Finally, a simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The accurate state of charge (SoC) online estimation for lithium-ion batteries is a primary concern for predicting the remaining range in electric vehicles. The Sigma points Kalman Filter is an emerging SoC filtering technology. Firstly, the charge and discharge tests of the battery were carried out using the interval static method to obtain the accurate calibration of the SoC-OCV (open circuit voltage) relationship curve. Secondly, the recursive least squares method (RLS) was combined with the dynamic stress test (DST) to identify the parameters of the second-order equivalent circuit model (ECM) and establish a non-linear state-space model of the lithium-ion battery. Thirdly, based on proportional correction sampling and symmetric sampling Sigma points, an SoC estimation method combining unscented transformation and Stirling interpolation center difference was designed. Finally, a semi-physical simulation platform was built. The Federal Urban Driving Schedule and US06 Highway Driving Schedule operating conditions were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method in the presence of initial SoC errors and compare with the EKF (extended Kalman filter), UKF (unscented Kalman filter) and CDKF (central difference Kalman filter) algorithms. The results showed that the new algorithm could ensure an SoC error within 2% under the two working conditions and quickly converge to the reference value when the initial SoC value was inaccurate, effectively improving the initial error correction ability.

Abstract State-of-charge (SOC) estimation is essential in the energy management of electric vehicles. In the context of SOC estimation, a dual-filter based on the equivalent circuit model represents an important research direction. The trigger for parameter filter in a dual filter has a significant influence on the algorithm, despite which it has been studied scarcely. The present paper, therefore, discusses the types and characteristics of triggers reported in the literature and proposes a novel trigger mechanism for improving the accuracy and robustness of SOC estimation. The proposed mechanism is based on an open-loop model, which determines whether to trigger the parameter filter based on the model voltage error. In the present work, particle filter (PF) is used as the state filter and Kalman filter (KF) as the parameter filter. This dual filter is used as a carrier to compare the proposed trigger with three other triggers and single filter algorithms, including PF and unscented Kalman filter (UKF). According to the results, under different dynamic cycles, initial SOC values, and temperatures, the root-mean-square error of the SOC estimated using the proposed algorithm is at least 34.07% lower than the value estimated using other approaches. In terms of computation time, the value is 4.67%. Therefore, the superiority of the proposed mechanism is demonstrated.

The state of charge (SOC) estimation of the battery is one of the important functions of the battery management system of the electric vehicle, and the accurate SOC estimation is of great significance to the safe operation of the electric vehicle and the service life of the battery. Among the existing SOC estimation methods, the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm is widely used for SOC estimation due to its lossless transformation and high estimation accuracy. However, the traditional UKF algorithm is greatly affected by system noise and observation noise during SOC estimation. Therefore, we took the lithium cobalt oxide battery as the analysis object, and designed an adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) algorithm based on innovation and residuals to estimate SOC. Firstly, the second-order RC equivalent circuit model was established according to the physical characteristics of the battery, and the least square method was used to identify the parameters of the model and verify the model accuracy. Then, the AUKF algorithm was used for SOC estimation; the AUKF algorithm monitors the changes of innovation and residual in the filter and updates system noise covariance and observation noise covariance in real time using innovation and residual, so as to adjust the gain of the filter and realize the optimal estimation. Finally came the error comparison analysis of the estimation results of the UKF algorithm and AUKF algorithm; the results prove that the accuracy of the AUKF algorithm is 2.6% better than that of UKF algorithm.
