A novel trigger mechanism for a dual-filter to improve the state-of-charge estimation of lithium-ion batteries

Abstract State-of-charge (SOC) estimation is essential in the energy management of electric vehicles. In the context of SOC estimation, a dual-filter based on the equivalent circuit model represents an important research direction. The trigger for parameter filter in a dual filter has a significant influence on the algorithm, despite which it has been studied scarcely. The present paper, therefore, discusses the types and characteristics of triggers reported in the literature and proposes a novel trigger mechanism for improving the accuracy and robustness of SOC estimation. The proposed mechanism is based on an open-loop model, which determines whether to trigger the parameter filter based on the model voltage error. In the present work, particle filter (PF) is used as the state filter and Kalman filter (KF) as the parameter filter. This dual filter is used as a carrier to compare the proposed trigger with three other triggers and single filter algorithms, including PF and unscented Kalman filter (UKF). According to the results, under different dynamic cycles, initial SOC values, and temperatures, the root-mean-square error of the SOC estimated using the proposed algorithm is at least 34.07% lower than the value estimated using other approaches. In terms of computation time, the value is 4.67%. Therefore, the superiority of the proposed mechanism is demonstrated.

Filtering based state of charge (SOC) estimation with an equivalent circuit model is commonly extended to Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicle (EV) or similar energy storage applications. During the last several decades, different implementations of online parameter identification such as Kalman filters have been presented in literature. However, if the system is a moving EV during rapid acceleration or regenerative braking or when using heating or air conditioning, most of the existing works suffer from poor prediction of state and state estimation error covariance, leading to the problem of accuracy degeneracy of the algorithm. On this account, this paper presents a particle filter-based hybrid filtering method particularly for SOC estimation of Li-ion cells in EVs. A sampling importance resampling particle filter is used in combination with a standard Kalman filter and an unscented Kalman filter as a proposal distribution for the particle filter to be made much faster and more accurate. Test results show that the error on the state estimate is less than 0.8% despite additive current measurement noise with 0.05 A deviation.

In order to improve the estimation accuracy of the battery state of charge (SOC) based on the equivalent circuit model, a lithium-ion battery SOC estimation method based on adaptive forgetting factor least squares and unscented Kalman filtering is proposed. The Thevenin equivalent circuit model of the battery is established. Through the simulated annealing optimization algorithm, the forgetting factor is adaptively changed in real-time according to the model demand, and the SOC estimation is realized by combining the least-squares online identification of the adaptive forgetting factor and the unscented Kalman filter. The results show that the terminal voltage error identified by the adaptive forgetting factor least-squares online identification is extremely small; that is, the model parameter identification accuracy is high, and the joint algorithm with the unscented Kalman filter can also achieve a high-precision estimation of SOC.

The state of charge (SOC) plays an important role in battery management systems (BMS). However, SOC cannot be measured directly and an accurate state estimation is difficult to obtain due to the nonlinear battery characteristics. In this paper, a method of SOC estimation with parameter updating by using the dual square root cubature Kalman filter (DSRCKF) is proposed. The proposed method has been validated experimentally and the results are compared with dual extended Kalman filter (DEKF) and dual square root unscented Kalman filter (DSRUKF) methods. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method has the most balance performance among them in terms of the SOC estimation accuracy, execution time, and convergence rate.

State-of-charge estimation and on-line model modification of lithium-ion batteries are more urgently required because of the great impact of the model accuracy on the algorithm performance. This study aims to propose an improved DUKF based on the state-parameter separation. Its characteristics include: (1) State-Of-Charge (SoC) is treated as the only state variable to eliminate the strong correlation between state and parameters. (2) Two filters are ranked to run the parameter modification only when the state estimation has converged. First, the double polarization (DP) model of battery is established, and the parameters of the model are identified at both the pulse discharge and long discharge recovery under Hybrid Pulse Power Characterization (HPPC) test. Second, the implementation of the proposed algorithm is described. Third, combined with the identification results, the study elaborates that it is unreliable to use the predicted voltage error of closed-loop algorithm as the criterion to measure the accuracy of the model, while the output voltage obtained by the open-loop model with dynamic parameters can reflect the real situation. Finally, comparative experiments are designed under HPPC and DST conditions. Results show that the proposed state-parameter separated IAUKF-UKF has higher SoC estimation accuracy and better stability than traditional DUKF.

Due to its accuracy, simplicity, and other advantages, the Kalman filter method is one of the common algorithms to estimate the state-of-charge (SOC) of batteries. However, this method still has its shortcomings. The Kalman filter method is an algorithm designed for linear systems and requires precise mathematical models. Lithium-ion batteries are not linear systems, so the establishment of the battery equivalent circuit model (ECM) is necessary for SOC estimation. In this paper, an adaptive Kalman filter method and the battery Thevenin equivalent circuit are combined to estimate the SOC of an electric vehicle power battery dynamically. Firstly, the equivalent circuit model is studied, and the battery model suitable for SOC estimation is established. Then, the parameters of the corresponding battery charge and the discharge experimental detection model are designed. Finally, the adaptive Kalman filter method is applied to the model in the unknown interference noise environment and is also adopted to estimate the SOC of the battery online. The simulation results show that the proposed method can correct the SOC estimation error caused by the model error in real time. The estimation accuracy of the proposed method is higher than that of the Kalman filter method. The adaptive Kalman filter method also has a correction effect on the initial value error, which is suitable for online SOC estimation of power batteries. The experiment under the BBDST (Beijing Bus Dynamic Stress Test) working condition fully proves that the proposed SOC estimation algorithm can hold the satisfactory accuracy even in complex situations.

Accurate state of charge (SoC) estimation is of great significance for the lithium-ion battery to ensure its safety operation and to prevent it from overcharging or overdischarging. To achieve reliable SoC estimation for Li4Ti5O12lithium-ion battery cell, three filtering methods have been compared and evaluated. A main contribution of this study is that a general three-step model-based battery SoC estimation scheme has been proposed. It includes the processes of battery data measurement, parametric modeling, and model-based SoC estimation. With the proposed general scheme, multiple types of model-based SoC estimators have been developed and evaluated for battery management system application. The detailed comparisons on three advanced adaptive filter techniques, which include extend Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, and adaptive extend Kalman filter (AEKF), have been implemented with a Li4Ti5O12lithium-ion battery. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model-based SoC estimation approach with AEKF algorithm, which uses the covariance matching technique, performs well with good accuracy and robustness; the mean absolute error of the SoC estimation is within 1% especially with big SoC initial error.

The state-of-charge (SOC) is a fundamental indicator representing the remaining capacity of lithium-ion batteries, which plays an important role in the battery’s optimized operation. In this paper, the model-based SOC estimation strategy is studied for batteries. However, the battery’s model parameters need to be extracted through cumbersome prior experiments. To remedy such deficiency, a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm is utilized for model parameter online identification, and an adaptive square-root unscented Kalman filter (SRUKF) is designed to estimate the battery’s SOC. As demonstrated in extensive experimental results, the designed adaptive SRUKF combined with RLS-based model identification is a promising SOC estimation approach. Compared with other commonly used Kalman filter-based methods, the proposed algorithm has higher precision in the SOC estimation.

The state of charge (SOC) estimation of the battery is one of the important functions of the battery management system of the electric vehicle, and the accurate SOC estimation is of great significance to the safe operation of the electric vehicle and the service life of the battery. Among the existing SOC estimation methods, the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm is widely used for SOC estimation due to its lossless transformation and high estimation accuracy. However, the traditional UKF algorithm is greatly affected by system noise and observation noise during SOC estimation. Therefore, we took the lithium cobalt oxide battery as the analysis object, and designed an adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) algorithm based on innovation and residuals to estimate SOC. Firstly, the second-order RC equivalent circuit model was established according to the physical characteristics of the battery, and the least square method was used to identify the parameters of the model and verify the model accuracy. Then, the AUKF algorithm was used for SOC estimation; the AUKF algorithm monitors the changes of innovation and residual in the filter and updates system noise covariance and observation noise covariance in real time using innovation and residual, so as to adjust the gain of the filter and realize the optimal estimation. Finally came the error comparison analysis of the estimation results of the UKF algorithm and AUKF algorithm; the results prove that the accuracy of the AUKF algorithm is 2.6% better than that of UKF algorithm.

State of charge (SOC) of the lithium-ion battery is an important parameter of the battery management system (BMS), which plays an important role in the safe operation of electric vehicles. When existing unknown or inaccurate noise statistics of the system, the traditional unscented Kalman filter (UKF) may fail to estimate SOC due to the non-positive error covariance of the state vector, and the SOC estimation accuracy is not high. Therefore, an improved adaptive unscented Kalman filter (IAUKF) algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. The IAUKF is composed of the improved unscented Kalman filter (IUKF) that is able to suppress the non-positive definiteness of error covariance and Sage–Husa adaptive filter. The IAUKF can improve the SOC estimation stability and can improve the SOC estimation accuracy by estimating and correcting the system noise statistics adaptively. The IAUKF is verified under the federal urban driving schedule test, and the SOC estimation results are compared with IUKF and UKF. The experimental results show that the IAUKF has higher estimation accuracy and stability, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.
