Raytracing is a widespread tool for room acoustic simulations, and one of its main advantages is the inclusion of surface scattering. Although surface scattering has been acknowledged as a central aspect of accurate raytracing simulations for many years, there is ongoing research into its effects and how to implement it better. This study evaluates three different algorithms for surface scattering in raytracers, referred to as on–off scattering, perturbation scattering, and diffuse field scattering. Their theoretical foundation is discussed, and the physical accuracy of the resulting simulations is evaluated by comparing simulated room acoustic parameters to measurements. It is found that the choice of surface scattering algorithm has a significant impact on the simulation outcomes, both in terms of physical accuracy and in terms of usability. Additionally, there are differences in the parametrization of surface scattering depending on the algorithm chosen. Of the three tested algorithms, the most commonly used algorithm (on–off scattering) seems to have the best properties for simulations.

While interest is growing in the possible advantages of sonifiying physiological information in the operating room, principles to guide the design of sonifications have not been folly developed. An unresolved question concerns the number of auditory streams that can be monitored and the number of auditory dimensions carrying information within a stream that can be monitored. This question has implications for the effective operation of selective and divided attention. This experiment explored the perceptual limits of attending to six acoustic parameters of one sound stream. A range of discriminable differences was developed for each of six acoustic parameters. Performance on a discrimination task for all six acoustic parameters was significantly different from chance when only one acoustic parameter changed. Performance levels significantly different from chance were obtained for five of the six acoustic parameters when one other distractor parameter also changed. However, performance dropped to below chance for all parameters when five distractor parameters also changed. The results are discussed in the context of ongoing research that approaches the design problem from both a perceptual perspective and a cognitive, strategic perspective.

AbstractOne of the greatest societal challenges right now can be seen in the design of the interaction between human and technology. Especially in recent years this has become more intense. In almost all life situations, we are already supported or assisted by technology. Such systems come in various forms and characteristics. This paper will report on an ongoing research project named smartASSIST which aims to establish methods for the development of wearable systems for physical support as well as exemplary supporting technologies. The research is based upon a theoretical foundation of human-machine support relations which leads to the conceptual approach of constructing Human-Hybrid-Robot (HHR) systems.

Titanium-aluminum alloy metal matrix composites (MMC) and Ti-Al intermetallic matrix composites (IMC), reinforced with continuous SCS6 SiC fibers are leading candidates for high temperature aerospace applications such as the National Aerospace Plane (NASP). The nature of deformation at fiber / matrix interfaces is characterized in this ongoing research. One major concern is the mismatch in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the Ti-based matrix and the SiC fiber. This can lead to thermal stresses upon cooling down from the temperature incurred during hot isostatic pressing (HIP), which are sufficient to cause yielding in the matrix, and/or lead to fatigue from the thermal cycling that will be incurred during application, A second concern is the load transfer, from fiber to matrix, that is required if/when fiber fracture occurs. In both cases the stresses in the matrix are most severe at the interlace.

This paper presents a case study of a language-impaired child who signaled the distinction between English singular and plural using suprasegmental cues rather than the usual segmental form used within the parent language. Acoustic analyses performed within the first study in the paper revealed that the suprasegmental features used to maintain this distinction included various duration, fundamental frequency, and intensity parameters. Acoustic analyses Were also performed on a set of matched two- and four-item plural forms within a second study. The results of these analyses indicated that the same acoustic parameters were used to distinguish two-item plural forms from four-item plural forms. This case of linguistic creativity is offered as further evidence in support of the model of language acquisition that emphasizes the active role children take in the acquisition process. Additionally, the phonological, morphological, and psycholinguistic factors that may contribute to such rule invention are discussed.

Glaucon's Challenge at the beginning of Book 2 of Plato's Republic has long prompted interpretive difficulties, due to a misunderstanding of its central aspect. The task of this essay is to correct that misunderstanding, at which point The Challenge can be seen to be as simple and powerful as Glaucon seems to think it is. The Challenge is simple, insofar as it requires Socrates to show that justice is always good, that one is always better off cultivating a just character and acting justly than otherwise (and that's all there is to it). And it is powerful, insofar as Glaucon and Adeimantus provide plausible reasons to think not simply that justice is not always good, but that fully developed injustice is always good.

This article aims to investigate the creation of space and sound in artistic and architectural fields, with particular emphasis on the notions of interval and duration in the production and experience of soundscapes. The discussion arises out of an ongoing research project concerning sonic structures in public places, in which Japanese uguisubari ([Formula: see text]) – ‘nightingale flooring’, an alarm system from the Edo period) plays a key role in developing new kinds of site-specific and location-responsive sonic architectural structures for urban and rural environments. This paper takes uguisubari as its frame for investigating and evaluating how sounds create a space (however temporary), and how that sound in turn is created through movement. It thus seeks to unpick aspects of the reciprocal and performative act in which participant and the space engage through movement, whilst creating a sonic environment that permeates, defines and composes the boundaries of this space. The article will develop a framework for these kinds of works through a discussion on walking, movement, soundscape and somatechnical aspects of our experience of the world, drawing upon the work of Merleau-Ponty, Bergson and the Japanese concept of Ma (space-time).
