An efficient method for ambient-temperature synthesis of a variety of 2-substituted and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles from aldehyde and phenylenediamine substrates has been developed by utilizing Co(III)/Co(II)-mediated redox catalysis. The combination of only 1 mol% of Co(acac)2 and stoichiometric amount of hydrogen peroxide provides a fast, green, and mild access to a diversity of benzimidazoles under solvent-free conditions.

A highly efficient method for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides using oxalic acid dihydrate in the presence of hydrogen peroxide has been developed. A versatile procedure for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides without any over-oxidation to sulfones has been reported. This procedure cleanly oxidizes sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides in excellent yields at ambient temperature.

A highly efficient, simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of 3-arylquinolines has been developed in the presence of Al2O3/MeSO3H via one-pot reaction of anilines and styrene oxide. This methodology provides very rapid access to 3-arylquinolines in good to excellent yields under solvent-free conditions at room temperature in air.

A simple and highly efficient method has been developed for the tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols by their reaction with 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (DHP) using a catalytic amount (0.01–1 mol%) of aluminium triflate under solvent-free conditions. The effect of various factors like temperature, amount of the catalyst, and molar ratio of substrates on the reaction conditions has also been studied. The comparative study of tetrahydropyranylation of benzyl alcohol using various catalysts including some reported ones shows the efficiency of this catalyst.Key words: tetrahydropyranylation, aluminium triflate, alcohols, catalysis.

Abstract A highly efficient and green protocol for the synthesis of pyrimido[4,5-b]quinolines has been described. The one-pot multicomponent reaction of dimedone with arylaldehydes and 6-amino-1,3-dimethyluracil in the presence of N,N-diethyl-N-sulfoethanaminium chloride ([Et3N–SO3H][Cl]) as an ionic liquid (IL) catalyst under solvent-free conditions afforded the mentioned compounds in high yields and short reaction times. Our protocol is superior to many of the reported protocols in terms of two or more of these factors: the reaction times, yields, conditions (solvent-free versus usage of organic solvents), temperature and catalyst amount.
