It is difficult to extract the fault signal features of locomotive rolling bearings and the accuracy of fault diagnosis is low. In this paper, a novel fault diagnosis method based on the optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and resonance demodulation technology, namely GNVRFD, is proposed to realize the fault diagnosis of locomotive rolling bearings. In the proposed GNVRFD method, the genetic algorithm and nonlinear programming are combined to design a novel parameter optimization algorithm to adaptively optimize the two parameters of the VMD. Then the optimized VMD is employed to decompose the collected vibration signal into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and the kurtosis value of each IMF is calculated, respectively. According to the principle of maximum value, two most sensitive IMF components are selected to reconstruct the vibration signal. The resonance demodulation technology is used to decompose the reconstructed vibration signal in order to obtain the envelope spectrum, and the fault frequency of locomotive rolling bearings is effectively obtained. Finally, the actual data of rolling bearings is selected to testify the effectiveness of the proposed GNVRFD method. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed GNVRFD method can more accurately and effectively diagnose the fault of locomotive rolling bearings by comparing with other fault diagnosis methods.

Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to extract fault features from the nonlinear and non-stationary vibration signals of wind turbine rolling bearings, which leads to the low diagnosis and recognition rate, a feature extraction method based on multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA) improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) and multi-features is proposed. The decomposition effect of the VMD method is limited by the number of decompositions and the selection of penalty factors. This paper uses MIGA to optimize the parameters. The improved VMD method is used to decompose the vibration signal into a number of intrinsic mode functions (IMF), and a group of components containing the most information is selected through the Holder coefficient. For these components, multi-features based on Renyi entropy feature, singular value feature, and Hjorth parameter feature are extracted as the final feature vector, which is input to the classifier to realize the fault diagnosis of rolling bearing. The experimental results prove that the proposed method can more effectively extract the fault characteristics of rolling bearings. The fault diagnosis model based on this method can accurately identify bearing signals of 16 different fault types, severity, and damage points.

Variational mode decomposition provides a feasible method for non-stationary signal analysis, but the method is still not adaptive, which greatly limits the wide application of the method. Therefore, an adaptive spectrum mode extraction method is proposed in this article. The proposed method is mainly composed of spectral segmentation, mode extraction, and feedback adjustment. In the spectral segmentation part, considering the lack of robustness of classical scale space in a strong noise environment, this article proposes a method of fault feature mapping, which solves over-decomposition of variational mode decomposition guided by classical scale space. In the mode extraction part, for insufficient self-adaptability of the single penalty factor in the variational mode decomposition method, this article proposes a method of spectral aggregation factor, which solves multiple penalty factors that conform to different intrinsic modal functions. In the feedback adjustment part, this article proposes the method of transboundary criterion, which makes the result of variational mode decomposition within a preset range. Finally, using dispersion entropy and kurtosis indicators, intrinsic modal function components containing fault frequencies are extracted for envelope spectrum analysis to extract fault characteristic frequencies. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the proposed method is applied to simulation signals and bearing fault signals. Comparing the decomposition results of different methods, the conclusion shows that the proposed method is more advantageous for the fault feature extraction of rolling bearings.

Gyratory crusher is a kind of commonly used mining machinery. Because of its heavy workload and complex working environment, it is prone to failure and low reliability. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method of the gyratory crusher based on fast entropy multistage VMD, which is used to quickly and accurately find the possible fault problems of the gyratory crusher. This method mainly extracts the vibration signal by combining fast entropy and variational mode decomposition, so as to analyze the components of the vibration signal. Among them, fast entropy is used to quickly determine the number of modes in the signal spectrum and the bandwidth occupied by the modes. The extracted parameters can be converted into the input parameters of VMD. VMD can accurately extract the modal components in the signal by inputting the number of modes and related parameters. Due to the differences between modes, using the same parameters to extract the modes often leads to inaccurate results. Therefore, the concept of multilevel VMD is proposed. The parameters of different modes are determined by fast entropy. The modes in the signals are separated and extracted with different parameters so that different signal modes can be accurately extracted. In order to verify the accuracy of the method, this paper uses the data collected from the rotary crusher to test, and the results show that the proposed FE method can quickly and effectively extract the fault components in the vibration signal.

During the operation process of a gearbox, the vibration signals can reflect the dynamic states of the gearbox. The feature extraction of the vibration signal will directly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of fault diagnosis. One major challenge associated with the extraction process is the mode mixing, especially under such circumstance of intensive frequency. A novel fault diagnosis method based on frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition is proposed in this paper. Firstly, several stationary intrinsic mode functions can be obtained after the initial vibration signal is processed using frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition method. Using the method, the vibration signal feature can be extracted in unworkable region of the empirical mode decomposition. The method has the ability to separate such close frequency components, which overcomes the major drawback of the conventional methods. Numerical simulation results showed the validity of the developed signal processing method. Secondly, energy entropy was calculated to reflect the changes in vibration signals in relation to faults. At last, the energy distribution could serve as eigenvector of support vector machine to recognize the dynamic state and fault type of the gearbox. The analysis results from the gearbox signals demonstrate the effectiveness and veracity of the diagnosis approach.

Traditional fault diagnosis methods of DC (direct current) motors require establishing accurate mathematical models, effective state and parameter estimations, and appropriate statistical decision-making methods. However, these preconditions considerably limit traditional motor fault diagnosis methods. To address this issue, a new mechanical fault diagnosis method was proposed. Firstly, the vibration signals of motors were collected by the designed acquisition system. Subsequently, variational mode decomposition (VMD) was adopted to decompose the signal into a series of intrinsic mode functions and extract the characteristics of the vibration signals based on sample entropy. Finally, a united random forest improvement based on a SPRINT algorithm was employed to identify vibration signals of rotating machinery, and each branch tree was trained by applying different bootstrap sample sets. As the results reveal, the proposed fault diagnosis method is featured with good generalization performance, as the recognition rate of samples is more than 90%. Compared with the traditional neural network, data-heavy parameter optimization processes are avoided in this method. Therefore, the VMD-SampEn-RF-based method proposed in this paper performs well in fault diagnosis of DC motors, providing new ideas for future fault diagnoses of rotating machinery.

The bearing fault diagnosis is of vital significance in maintaining the safety of rotation machine. Among various fault detection techniques, the diagnosis based on vibration signal is widely applied in monitoring the condition of rotation machine. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is a novel signal analysis method, which can decompose a multi-component signal into a certain number of band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs) nonrecursively. VMD could overcome some problems such as mode mixing, the inference of noise, the determination of wavelet base, which exist in empirical mode decomposition, ensemble empirical mode decomposition, wavelet transform, respectively. However, the empirical selection of the parameters for VMD would affect the result of the decomposition. This paper presents an adaptive VMD method with parameter optimization for detecting the localized faults of rolling bearing. Kurtosis, sensitive to transient impulsive components, is employed as optimization index to evaluate the performance of the VMD. Two parameters in the VMD, namely the number of decomposition modes and data-fidelity constraint, are optimized synchronously based on the kurtosis index through artificial fish swarm algorithm. Executing VMD with the acquired parameters, the optimal BLIMF is obtained. The spectrum analysis of the optimal BLIMF could identify the characteristic frequency caused by the localized crack effectually. The validity of the proposed method is proved by means of a cyclic transient impulse response signal and two experiments with practical vibration signals of rolling bearings. Compared to several existing methods, the proposed method demonstrates reinforced results.

Gear is the most common mechanical transmission equipment. Therefore, gear fault diagnosis is of much significance. In this article, a gear fault diagnosis method based on the integration of empirical mode decomposition and cepstrum is proposed by introducing empirical mode decomposition and cepstrum into gear fault analysis. Firstly EMD is used to decompose the gear vibration signal finite number of intrinsic mode functions and a residual error item. To do gear fault diagnosis, cepstrum analysis is carried upon those intrinsic mode functions to extract feature information from the vibration signal. The results of the study on simulated and experimental signals show that this method is better than the cepstrum method and it can precisely locate the site of gear failure.

The vibration signals resulting from rolling bearings are nonlinear and nonstationary, and an approach for the fault diagnosis of rolling bearings using the quantile permutation entropy and EMD (empirical mode decomposition) is proposed. Firstly, the EMD is used to decompose the rolling bearings vibration signal, and several IMFs (intrinsic mode functions) spanning different scales are obtained. Secondly, aiming at the shortcomings of the permutation entropy algorithm, a new permutation entropy algorithm based on sample quantile is proposed, and the quantile permutation entropy of the first few IMFs, which contain the main fault information, is calculated. The quantile permutation entropies are accordingly seen as the characteristic vector and then input to the particle swarm optimization and support vector machine. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the experimental data. The analysis results show that the proposed approach can effectively achieve fault diagnosis of rolling bearings.

The bearing system of an alternating current (AC) motor is a nonlinear dynamics system. The working state of rolling bearings directly determines whether the machine is in reliable operation. Therefore, it is very meaningful to study the fault diagnosis and prediction of rolling bearings. In this paper, a new fault diagnosis method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD), Hilbert transform (HT), and broad learning model (BLM), called VHBLFD is proposed for rolling bearings. In the VHBLFD method, the VMD is used to decompose the vibration signals to obtain intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The HT is used to process the IMFs to obtain Hilbert envelope spectra, which are transformed into the mapped features and the enhancement nodes of BLM according to the complexity of the modeling tasks, and the nonlinear transformation mean according to the characteristics of input data. The BLM is used to classify faults of the rolling bearings of the AC motor. Next, the pseudo-inverse operation is used to obtain the fault diagnosis results. Finally, the VHBLFD is validated by actual vibration data. The experiment results show that the BLM can quickly and accurately be trained. The VHBLFD method can achieve higher identification accuracy for multi-states of rolling bearings and takes on fast operation speed and strong generalization ability.

Sensitive and accurate fault features from the vibration signals of planetary gearboxes are essential for fault diagnosis, in which extreme learning machine (ELM) techniques have been widely adopted. To increase the sensitivity of extracted features fed in ELM, a novel feature extraction method is put forward, which takes advantage of the transient dynamics and the reconstructed high-dimensional data from the original vibration signal. First, based on fast kurtosis analysis, the range of transient dynamics of a vibration signal is located. Next, with the extracted kurtosis information, with variational mode decomposition, a series of intrinsic mode functions are decomposed; the ones that fall into the obtained ranges are selected as transient features, corresponding to maximum kurtosis value. Fed by the transient features, a hierarchical ELM model is well-trained for fault classification. Furthermore, a denoising auto-encoder is used to optimize input weight and threshold of implicit learning node of ELM, satisfying orthogonal condition to realize the layering of its hidden layers. Finally, a numerical case and an experiment are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method. In comparison with its counterparts, the proposed method has a better classification accuracy in the aiding of transient features.
