Sensitive and accurate fault features from the vibration signals of planetary gearboxes are essential for fault diagnosis, in which extreme learning machine (ELM) techniques have been widely adopted. To increase the sensitivity of extracted features fed in ELM, a novel feature extraction method is put forward, which takes advantage of the transient dynamics and the reconstructed high-dimensional data from the original vibration signal. First, based on fast kurtosis analysis, the range of transient dynamics of a vibration signal is located. Next, with the extracted kurtosis information, with variational mode decomposition, a series of intrinsic mode functions are decomposed; the ones that fall into the obtained ranges are selected as transient features, corresponding to maximum kurtosis value. Fed by the transient features, a hierarchical ELM model is well-trained for fault classification. Furthermore, a denoising auto-encoder is used to optimize input weight and threshold of implicit learning node of ELM, satisfying orthogonal condition to realize the layering of its hidden layers. Finally, a numerical case and an experiment are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method. In comparison with its counterparts, the proposed method has a better classification accuracy in the aiding of transient features.

This paper presents a novel fault diagnosis method for analog circuits using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), relative entropy, and extreme learning machine (ELM). First, nominal and faulty response waveforms of a circuit are measured, respectively, and then are decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) with the EEMD method. Second, through comparing the nominal IMFs with the faulty IMFs, kurtosis and relative entropy are calculated for each IMF. Next, a feature vector is obtained for each faulty circuit. Finally, an ELM classifier is trained with these feature vectors for fault diagnosis. Via validating with two benchmark circuits, results show that the proposed method is applicable for analog fault diagnosis with acceptable levels of accuracy and time cost.

During the operation process of a gearbox, the vibration signals can reflect the dynamic states of the gearbox. The feature extraction of the vibration signal will directly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of fault diagnosis. One major challenge associated with the extraction process is the mode mixing, especially under such circumstance of intensive frequency. A novel fault diagnosis method based on frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition is proposed in this paper. Firstly, several stationary intrinsic mode functions can be obtained after the initial vibration signal is processed using frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition method. Using the method, the vibration signal feature can be extracted in unworkable region of the empirical mode decomposition. The method has the ability to separate such close frequency components, which overcomes the major drawback of the conventional methods. Numerical simulation results showed the validity of the developed signal processing method. Secondly, energy entropy was calculated to reflect the changes in vibration signals in relation to faults. At last, the energy distribution could serve as eigenvector of support vector machine to recognize the dynamic state and fault type of the gearbox. The analysis results from the gearbox signals demonstrate the effectiveness and veracity of the diagnosis approach.

Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to extract fault features from the nonlinear and non-stationary vibration signals of wind turbine rolling bearings, which leads to the low diagnosis and recognition rate, a feature extraction method based on multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA) improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) and multi-features is proposed. The decomposition effect of the VMD method is limited by the number of decompositions and the selection of penalty factors. This paper uses MIGA to optimize the parameters. The improved VMD method is used to decompose the vibration signal into a number of intrinsic mode functions (IMF), and a group of components containing the most information is selected through the Holder coefficient. For these components, multi-features based on Renyi entropy feature, singular value feature, and Hjorth parameter feature are extracted as the final feature vector, which is input to the classifier to realize the fault diagnosis of rolling bearing. The experimental results prove that the proposed method can more effectively extract the fault characteristics of rolling bearings. The fault diagnosis model based on this method can accurately identify bearing signals of 16 different fault types, severity, and damage points.

In view of the incipient fault characteristics are difficult to be extracted from the raw bearing fault signals, an incipient bearing fault diagnosis method based on parameter-adaptive variational mode decomposition (VMD) is proposed. The beetle antennae search (BAS) algorithm is adopted to seek for the optimal combination of the VMD parameters. The reciprocals of the calculated kurtosis values of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) decomposed via VMD are employed as a fitness function in the searching process. The optimal mode number and the quadratic penalty term of VMD are adaptively set after the search. Afterwards, a vibration signal is decomposed into a set of IMFs using the parameter-adaptive VMD, and the IMF with the maximal kurtosis value is selected as the sensitive one. The selected IMF is further analyzed by Hilbert envelope demodulation. The resulting envelope spectrum can show the significant fault impulse characteristics which are highly helpful to diagnose incipient bearing faults. The kurtosis and the proportion of fault energy are introduced as the input vector of the extreme learning machine (ELM). Comparisons have been conducted via ELM to evaluate the performance by using EMD and the fixed-parameter VMD. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is more effective in extracting the incipient bearing fault characteristics.

It is difficult to extract the fault signal features of locomotive rolling bearings and the accuracy of fault diagnosis is low. In this paper, a novel fault diagnosis method based on the optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and resonance demodulation technology, namely GNVRFD, is proposed to realize the fault diagnosis of locomotive rolling bearings. In the proposed GNVRFD method, the genetic algorithm and nonlinear programming are combined to design a novel parameter optimization algorithm to adaptively optimize the two parameters of the VMD. Then the optimized VMD is employed to decompose the collected vibration signal into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and the kurtosis value of each IMF is calculated, respectively. According to the principle of maximum value, two most sensitive IMF components are selected to reconstruct the vibration signal. The resonance demodulation technology is used to decompose the reconstructed vibration signal in order to obtain the envelope spectrum, and the fault frequency of locomotive rolling bearings is effectively obtained. Finally, the actual data of rolling bearings is selected to testify the effectiveness of the proposed GNVRFD method. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed GNVRFD method can more accurately and effectively diagnose the fault of locomotive rolling bearings by comparing with other fault diagnosis methods.

Gear is the most common mechanical transmission equipment. Therefore, gear fault diagnosis is of much significance. In this article, a gear fault diagnosis method based on the integration of empirical mode decomposition and cepstrum is proposed by introducing empirical mode decomposition and cepstrum into gear fault analysis. Firstly EMD is used to decompose the gear vibration signal finite number of intrinsic mode functions and a residual error item. To do gear fault diagnosis, cepstrum analysis is carried upon those intrinsic mode functions to extract feature information from the vibration signal. The results of the study on simulated and experimental signals show that this method is better than the cepstrum method and it can precisely locate the site of gear failure.

In order to extract the faint fault information from complicated vibration signal of bearing, the correlated kurtosis is introduced into the field of rolling bearing fault diagnosis. Combined with ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and correlated kurtosis, a feature extraction method is proposed. According to the method, by EEMD processing a group of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are obtained, then the IMF with maximal correlated kurtosis is selected, and the weak fault signal is clearly extracted. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on both simulated signal and actual data.

To address the problem that the faults in axial piston pumps are complex and difficult to effectively diagnose, an integrated hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method based on the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD), autoregressive (AR) spectrum energy, and wavelet kernel extreme learning machine (WKELM) methods is presented in this paper. First, the non-linear and non-stationary hydraulic pump vibration signals are decomposed into several intrinsic mode function (IMF) components by the MEEMD method. Next, AR spectrum analysis is performed for each IMF component, in order to extract the AR spectrum energy of each component as fault characteristics. Then, a hydraulic pump fault diagnosis model based on WKELM is built, in order to extract the features and diagnose faults of hydraulic pump vibration signals, for which the recognition accuracy reached 100%. Finally, the fault diagnosis effect of the hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method proposed in this paper is compared with BP neural network, support vector machine (SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM) methods. The hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method presented in this paper can diagnose faults of single slipper wear, single slipper loosing and center spring wear type with 100% accuracy, and the fault diagnosis time is only 0.002 s. The results demonstrate that the integrated hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method based on MEEMD, AR spectrum, and WKELM methods has higher fault recognition accuracy and faster speed than existing alternatives.

In order to discover the fault with roller bearing in time, a new fault diagnosis method based on Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and BP neural network is put forward in the paper. First, we get the fault signal through experiments. Then we use EMD to decompose the vibration signal into a series of single signals. We can extract main fault information from the single signals. The kurtosis coefficient of the single signals forms a feature vector which is used as the input data of the BP neural network. The trained BP neural network can be used for fault identification. Through analyzing, BP neural network can distinguish the fault into normal state, inner race fault, outer race fault. The results show that this method can gain very stable classification performance and good computational efficiency.

Under the complicated environment of large wind turbines, the vibration signal of a wind turbine has the characteristics of coupling and nonlinearity. The traditional feature extraction method for the signal is hard to accurately extract fault information, and there is a serious problem of information redundancy in fault diagnosis. Therefore, this paper proposed a multidomain feature fault diagnosis method based on complex empirical mode decomposition (CEMD) and random forest theory (RF). Firstly, this paper proposes a novel method of complex empirical mode decomposition by using the correlation information between two-dimensional signals and utilizing the idea of ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) by adding white noise to suppress the problem mode mixing in empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Secondly, the collected vibration signals are decomposed into IMFs by CEMD. Then, calculate 11 time domain characteristic parameters and 13 frequency domain characteristic parameters of the vibration signal, and calculate the energy and energy entropy of each IMF components. Make all the characteristic parameters as the multidomain feature vectors of wind turbines. Finally, the redundant feature vectors are eliminated by the importance of each feature vector which has been calculated, and the feature vectors selected are input to the random forest classifier to achieve the fault diagnosis of large wind turbines. Simulation and experimental results show that this method can effectively extract the fault feature of the signal and achieve the fault diagnosis of wind turbines, which has a higher accuracy of fault diagnosis than the traditional classification methods.
