This paper deals with new challenges regarding power quality in ship technology resulting from the novelisation and implementation of IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) rules and requirements. These rules, known as IACS E24 2016/2018, address harmonic distortion for ship electrical distribution systems, including harmonic filters. The reasons for the legislative changes based on a short overview of power quality-related accidents are discussed, after which a brief presentation of the updated IACS rules illustrated by a related DNV GL (Det Norske Veritas Germanischer Lloyd) case study is shown. A key part of this paper includes proposals concerning harmonics and interharmonics, distortion indices and transient disturbances. The aim of these proposals is to unify power quality indices and measurement procedures to maintain effective and comparable criteria for monitoring distortion and establish requirements for ship owners, designers, shipbuilders, classifiers, and crew members of marine objects.

Power quality has been an issue in electrical power systems. Disturbances occur in power quality which effects machines, some electric devices and severe cause will get very serious damages. For normal and efficient operation it’s necessary to compensate and acknowledge every type of the disturbances at earlier time of the power system. Many sorts of Custom Power Devices (CPD’s) are used to resolve these issues .Here at present, one in every of those devices, Dynamic Voltage restorer (DVR) is conferred. In power distribution systems this is often best and effective device employed. During this project new structure and control methodology of multifunctional DVRs for voltage quality correction are mentioned. Proportional Integral Controller and Fuzzy Logic Controller are used for the PQ improvement. The performance of the device and Total Harmonic Distortion is compared with each other. The performance of the device like voltage swell, sag is projected.

In recent years, with the widespread use of non-linear loads power electronic devices associated with the penetration of various renewable energy sources, the distribution system is highly affected by harmonic distortion caused by these sources. Moreover, the inverter-based distributed generation units (DGs) (e.g., photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine) that are integrated into the distribution systems, are considered as significant harmonic sources of severe harmful effects on the system power quality. To solve these issues, this paper proposes a harmonic mitigation method for improving the power quality problems in distribution systems. Specifically, the proposed optimal planning of the single tuned harmonic filters (STFs) in the presence of inverter-based DGs is developed by the recent Water Cycle Algorithm (WCA). The objectives of this planning problem aim to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD), power loss, filter investment cost, and improvement of voltage profile considering different constraints to meet the IEEE 519 standard. Further, the impact of the inverter-based DGs on the system harmonics is studied. Two cases are considered to find the effect of the DGs harmonic spectrum on the system distortion and filter planning. The proposed method is tested on the IEEE 69-bus distribution system. The effectiveness of the proposed planning model is demonstrated where significant reductions in the harmonic distortion are accomplished.

Abstract Electrical power quality has been an important and growing problem because of the proliferation of nonlinear loads such as power electronic converters in typical power distribution systems in recent years. Particularly, voltage harmonics and power distribution equipment problems result from current harmonics produced by nonlinear loads. The Electronic equipment like, computers, battery chargers, electronic ballasts, variable frequency drives, and switch mode power supplies, generate perilous harmonics and cause enormous economic loss every year. Problems caused by power quality have great adverse economic impact on the utilities and customers. Due to that both power suppliers and power consumers are concerned about the power quality problems and compensation techniques. Power quality has become more and more serious with each passing day. As a result active power filter gains much more attention due to excellent harmonic and reactive power compensation in two-wire (single phase), three-wire (three-phase without neutral), and four-wire (three-phase with neutral) ac power networks with nonlinear loads. However, this is still a technology under development, and many new contributions and new control topologies have been reported in the last few years. It is aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of APF technology to the researchers and application engineers dealing with power quality issues.

For the validation of vehicular Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS), engineers are currently required to analyze disperse information regarding technical requirements, standards and datasheets. Moreover, an enormous effort takes place to elaborate testing plans that are representative for most EDS possible configurations. These experiments are followed by laborious data analysis. To diminish this workload and the need for physical resources, this work reports a simulation platform that centralizes the tasks for testing different EDS configurations and assists the early detection of inadequacies in the design process. A specific procedure is provided to develop a software tool intended for this aim. Moreover, the described functionalities are exemplified considering as a case study the main wire harness from a commercial vehicle. A web-based architecture has been employed in alignment with the ongoing software development revolution and thus provides flexibility for both, developers and users. Due to its scalability, the proposed software scheme can be extended to other web-based simulation applications. Furthermore, the automatic generation of electrical layouts for EDS is addressed to favor an intuitive understanding of the network. To favor human–information interaction, utilized visual analytics strategies are also discussed. Finally, full simulation workflows are exposed to provide further insights on the deployment of this type of computer platforms.

Electrical power systems are expected to transmit continuously nominal rated sinusoidal voltage and current to consumers. However, the widespread use of power electronics has brought power quality problems. This study performs classification of power quality disturbances using an artificial neural network (ANN). The most appropriate ANN structure was determined using the Box-Behnken experimental design method. Nine types of disturbance (no fault, voltage sag, voltage, swell, flicker, harmonics, transient, DC component, electromagnetic interference, instant interruption) were investigated in computer simulations. The feature vectors used in the identification of the different types of disturbances were produced using the discrete wavelet transform and principal component analysis. Our results show that the optimized feed forward multilayer ANN structure successfully distinguishes power quality disturbances in simulation data and was also able to identify these disturbances in real time data from substations.

This paper investigates the harmonic distortion and losses in power distribution systems due to the dramatic increase of nonlinear loads. This paper tries to determine the amount of the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads in residential, commercial and office loads in distribution feeders and estimates the energy losses due to these harmonics. Norton equivalent modeling technique has been used to model the nonlinear loads. The presented harmonic Norton equivalent models of the end user appliances are accurately obtained based on the experimental data taken from the laboratory measurements. A 20 kV/400V distribution feeder is simulated to analyze the impact of nonlinear loads on feeder harmonic distortion level and losses. The model follows a “bottom-up” approach, starting from end users appliances Norton equivalent model and then modeling residential, commercial and office loads. Two new indices are introduced by the authors to quantize the effect of each nonlinear appliance on the power quality of a distribution feeder and loads are ranked based on these new defined indices. The simulation results show that harmonic distortion in distribution systems can increase power losses up to 20%.

Power quality is one big issue in power system and a big challenge for power engineers today. Electrical consumers (or otherwise load devices) expect electrical power received power should be of first-class. Bad quality in electrical power directs to fuse blowing, machine overheating, increase in distribution losses, damage to sensitive load devices and many more. DSTATCOM is one of the FACTS controllers designed to improve the quality in electrical power and thus improving the performance of distribution system. This paper presents a multilevel DSTATCOM topology to enhance power quality in power distribution system delivering high-quality power to the customer load devices. Diode-clamped structure is employed for multi-level DSTATCOM structure. ‘PQ’ based control strategy generates reference signal which is further processed through level-shifted multi-carrier PWM strategy for the generation of gate pulses to multi-level DSTATCOM structure. Simulation work of proposed system is developed and the result analysis is presented using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Performance of multi-level DSTATCOM topology is verified with fixed and variable loads.
