This paper presents a big data analytics-based model developed for electric distribution utilities aiming to forecast the demand of service orders (SOs) on a spatio-temporal basis. Being fed by robust history and location data from a database provided by an energy utility that is using this innovative system, the algorithm automatically forecasts the number of SOs that will need to be executed in each location in several time steps (hourly, monthly and yearly basis). The forecasted emergency SOs demand, which is related to energy outages, are stochastically distributed, projecting the impacted consumers and its individual interruption indexes. This spatio-temporal forecasting is the main input for a web-based platform for optimal bases allocation, field team sizing and scheduling implemented in the eleven distribution utilities of Energisa group in Brazil.

Purpose This study aims to investigate and explore the impact of big data analytics (BDA) as a mechanism that could develop the ability to measure customers’ performance. To accomplish the research aim, the theoretical discussion was developed through the combination of the diffusion of innovation theory with the technology acceptance model (TAM) that is less developed for the research field of this study. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data was obtained using Web-based quasi-experiments with 104 Egyptian accounting professionals. Further, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test were used to analyze data. Findings The empirical results indicate that measuring customers’ performance based on BDA increase the organizations’ ability to analyze the customers’ unstructured data, decrease the cost of customers’ unstructured data analysis, increase the ability to handle the customers’ problems quickly, minimize the time spent to analyze the customers’ data and obtaining the customers’ performance reports and control managers’ bias when they measure customer satisfaction. The study findings supported the accounting professionals’ acceptance of BDA through the TAM elements: the intention to use (R), perceived usefulness (U) and the perceived ease of use (E). Research limitations/implications This study has several limitations that could be addressed in future research. First, this study focuses on customers’ performance measurement (CPM) only and ignores other performance measurements such as employees’ performance measurement and financial performance measurement. Future research can examine these areas. Second, this study conducts a Web-based experiment with Master of Business Administration students as a study’s participants, researchers could conduct a laboratory experiment and report if there are differences. Third, owing to the novelty of the topic, there was a lack of theoretical evidence in developing the study’s hypotheses. Practical implications This study succeeds to provide the much-needed empirical evidence for BDA positive impact in improving CPM efficiency through the proposed framework (i.e. CPM and BDA framework). Furthermore, this study contributes to the improvement of the performance measurement process, thus, the decision-making process with meaningful and proper insights through the capability of collecting and analyzing the customers’ unstructured data. On a practical level, the company could eventually use this study’s results and the new insights to make better decisions and develop its policies. Originality/value This study holds significance as it provides the much-needed empirical evidence for BDA positive impact in improving CPM efficiency. The study findings will contribute to the enhancement of the performance measurement process through the ability of gathering and analyzing the customers’ unstructured data.

Tourism is one of the most important sectors contributing towards the economic growth of India. Big data analytics in the recent times is being applied in the tourism sector for the activities like tourism demand forecasting, prediction of interests of tourists’, identification of tourist attraction elements and behavioural patterns. The major objective of this study is to demonstrate how big data analytics could be applied in predicting the travel behaviour of International and Domestic tourists. The significance of machine learning algorithms and techniques in processing the big data is also important. Thus, the combination of machine learning and big data is the state-of-art method which has been acclaimed internationally. While big data analytics and its application with respect to the tourism industry has attracted few researchers interest in the present times, there have been not much researches on this area of study particularly with respect to the scenario of India. This study intends to describe how big data analytics could be used in forecasting Indian tourists travel behaviour. To add much value to the research this study intends to categorize on what grounds the tourists chose domestic tourism and on what grounds they chose international tourism. The online datasets on places reviews from cities namely Chicago, Beijing, New York, Dubai, San Francisco, London, New Delhi and Shanghai have been gathered and an associative rule mining based algorithm has been applied on the data set in order to attain the objectives of the study

Big data are products of human collective intelligence that are exponentially increasing in all facets of quantity, complexity, semantics, distribution, and processing costs in computer science, cognitive informatics, web-based computing, cloud computing, and computational intelligence. This paper presents fundamental big data analysis and mining technologies in the domain of social networks as a typical paradigm of big data engineering. A key principle of computational sociology known as the characteristic opinion equilibrium is revealed in social networks and electoral systems. A set of numerical and fuzzy models for collective opinion analyses is formally presented. Fuzzy data mining methodologies are rigorously described for collective opinion elicitation and benchmarking in order to enhance the conventional counting and statistical methodologies for big data analytics.

The next generation of data generation tools include Microsoft Excel, Access, and database tools like SQL, MySQL, and DB2.

Purpose Demand forecasting is a challenging task that could benefit from additional relevant data and processes. The purpose of this paper is to examine how big data analytics (BDA) enhances forecasts’ accuracy. Design/methodology/approach A conceptual structure based on the design-science paradigm is applied to create categories for BDA. Existing approaches from the scientific literature are synthesized with industry knowledge through experience and intuition. Accordingly, a reference frame is developed using three steps: description of conceptual elements utilizing justificatory knowledge, specification of principles to explain the interplay between elements, and creation of a matching by conducting investigations within the retail industry. Findings The developed framework could serve as a guide for meaningful BDA initiatives in the supply chain. The paper illustrates that integration of different data sources in demand forecasting is feasible but requires data scientists to perform the job, an appropriate technological foundation, and technology investments. Originality/value So far, no scientific work has analyzed the relation of forecasting methods to BDA; previous works have described technologies, types of analytics, and forecasting methods separately. This paper, in contrast, combines insights and provides advice on how enterprises can employ BDA in their operational, tactical, or strategic demand plans.
