The maritime transportation sector is one of the main contributors to global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a strategy to reduce these emissions from international shipping >50% by 2050, compared to 2008’s emissions. Therefore, ship owners need to adopt solutions to bring emissions within these and other future limits by means of environmentally friendly fuels (hydrogen or hydrogen carriers) and high efficiency propulsion technologies (fuel cells). This paper focuses on the replacement of the conventional Diesel genset installed on a hybrid small-size ferry, with an innovative system based on PEMFC technology. A real case scenario is investigated: the total energy/power demand of the vessel is determined basing on a typical operational profile. Then, a preliminary redesign of its powertrain configuration is proposed along with an energy management strategy. The analysis has allowed to define the hydrogen consumption for a daily operation. Finally, different storage technologies involving both compressed and liquefied hydrogen have been considered and compared, in order to identify ship’s weight and space requirements.

This paper presents a big data analytics-based model developed for electric distribution utilities aiming to forecast the demand of service orders (SOs) on a spatio-temporal basis. Being fed by robust history and location data from a database provided by an energy utility that is using this innovative system, the algorithm automatically forecasts the number of SOs that will need to be executed in each location in several time steps (hourly, monthly and yearly basis). The forecasted emergency SOs demand, which is related to energy outages, are stochastically distributed, projecting the impacted consumers and its individual interruption indexes. This spatio-temporal forecasting is the main input for a web-based platform for optimal bases allocation, field team sizing and scheduling implemented in the eleven distribution utilities of Energisa group in Brazil.

Abstract The demand for improving living standards has led to increasing freshwater consumption and comfort cooling, requiring significant performance improvements. In this regard, a novel and efficient cascade refrigeration system for simultaneous generation of considerable freshwater and cooling amounts is proposed. The system does not require dedicated components for desalinating seawater because they are dual-purpose. Utilizing the cascade configuration enhances energy efficiency by lowering the compression work while improving energy recovery by utilizing existing heat to vaporize seawater for desalination. A mathematical model of the innovative system based on thermodynamic and economic principles has been developed and utilized to predict the proposed system's thermal performance and cost savings. A comprehensive analysis has been conducted to study the effect of multiple parameters such as the evaporator, condenser, and brine boiling temperatures. The main studied parameters were COP, GOR, freshwater production, and total cost savings. For a 10 TR unit, the freshwater production was between 56.11 – 73.36 kg/h, with cost savings reaching 2,226 US$/yr. It was found that the freshwater production increased with condenser and brine boiling temperature but decreased with evaporator temperature. The COP improvement can be as much as 26% over the reference cooling system without desalination.

The human’s personality takes shape in preschool age. Later in school and adolescence age, a human’s personality continues to develop. However, the preschool age is the most sensitive period for forming emotional and value attitudes to cognition, interaction with the social environment, and self-development. The educational system “Education & Care” is the first complex system in preschool education; it uses modern educational technologies to develop a child’s harmonious personality and leadership potential. The system includes the Programme for early childhood and preschool education: “Education & Care”, “Monitoring the level of child’s educational development”, “Approximate daily planning”, recommendations for parents on children’s education, nutrition, and other methodical and didactic materials. The principal value of the educational system “Education & Care” is that it can be used not only by a teacher but by an adult who takes care of a child of early and preschool age and is engaged in his or her education; it is also possible to organize an effective educational process for a child even at home.

Policy shifts in the United States are beginning to reduce the emphasis on using statewide assessment results primarily for accountability and teacher evaluation. Increasingly, there are calls for and interest in innovative and flexible assessments that shift the purposes of assessment and use of results toward instructional planning and student learning. Under the Innovative Assessment Demonstration Authority, some states are exploring options for replacing traditional large-scale summative assessments with innovative measures. However, many of these programs are still in early phases of planning and research and have not yet fully articulated how the innovative system achieves desired outcomes. This conceptual paper presents an argument in the form of a theory of action for a flexible and innovative assessment system already in operational use. The system replaces traditional summative assessments with large-scale through-year Instructionally Embedded assessments. We describe the components of the theory of action, detailing the theoretical model and supporting literature that illustrate how system design, delivery, and scoring contribute to the intended outcomes of teachers using assessment results to inform instruction and having higher expectations for student achievement, in addition to accountability uses. We share considerations for others developing innovative assessment systems to meet stakeholders’ needs.
