Tree growth is a multidimensional process that is affected by several factors. There is a continuous demand for improved information on tree growth and the ecological traits controlling it. This study aims at providing new approaches to improve ecological understanding of tree growth by the means of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Changes in tree stem form and stem volume allocation were investigated during a five-year monitoring period. In total, a selection of attributes from 736 trees from 37 sample plots representing different forest structures were extracted from taper curves derived from two-date TLS point clouds. The results of this study showed the capability of point cloud-based methods in detecting changes in the stem form and volume allocation. In addition, the results showed a significant difference between different forest structures in how relative stem volume and logwood volume increased during the monitoring period. Along with contributing to providing more accurate information for monitoring purposes in general, the findings of this study showed the ability and many possibilities of point cloud-based method to characterize changes in living organisms in particular, which further promote the feasibility of using point clouds as an observation method also in ecological studies.

Airborne and terrestrial laser scanning and close-range photogrammetry are frequently used for very high-resolution mapping of land surface. These techniques require a good strategy of mapping to provide full visibility of all areas otherwise the resulting data will contain areas with no data (data shadows). Especially, deglaciated rugged alpine terrain with abundant large boulders, vertical rock faces and polished roche-moutones surfaces complicated by poor accessibility for terrestrial mapping are still a challenge. In this paper, we present a novel methodological approach based on a combined use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and close-range photogrammetry from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for generating a high-resolution point cloud and digital elevation model (DEM) of a complex alpine terrain. The approach is demonstrated using a small study area in the upper part of a deglaciated valley in the Tatry Mountains, Slovakia. The more accurate TLS point cloud was supplemented by the UAV point cloud in areas with insufficient TLS data coverage. The accuracy of the iterative closest point adjustment of the UAV and TLS point clouds was in the order of several centimeters but standard deviation of the mutual orientation of TLS scans was in the order of millimeters. The generated high-resolution DEM was compared to SRTM DEM, TanDEM-X and national DMR3 DEM products confirming an excellent applicability in a wide range of geomorphologic applications.

In this editorial, we provide an overview of the content of the special issue on “Terrestrial Laser Scanning”. The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together innovative developments and applications of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), understood in a broad sense. Thus, although most contributions mainly involve the use of laser-based systems, other alternative technologies that also allow for obtaining 3D point clouds for the measurement and the 3D characterization of terrestrial targets, such as photogrammetry, are also considered. The 15 published contributions are mainly focused on the applications of TLS to the following three topics: TLS performance and point cloud processing, applications to civil engineering, and applications to plant characterization.

Since the 2000s, terrestrial laser scanning, as one of the methods used to document historical edifices in protected areas, has taken on greater importance because it mitigates the difficulties associated with working on large areas and saves time while also making it possible to better understand all the particularities of the area. Through this technology, comprehensive point data (point clouds) about the surface of an object can be generated in a highly accurate three-dimensional manner. Furthermore, with the proper software this three-dimensional point cloud data can be transformed into three-dimensional rendering/mapping/modeling and quantitative orthophotographs. In this chapter, the study will present the results of terrestrial laser scanning and surveying which was used to obtain three-dimensional point clouds through three-dimensional survey measurements and scans of silhouettes of streets in Fatih in Historic Peninsula in Istanbul, which were then transposed into survey images and drawings. The study will also cite examples of the facade mapping using terrestrial laser scanning data in Istanbul Historic Peninsula Project.

Terrestrial laser scanning systems are characterized by a sampling pattern which varies in point density across the hemisphere. Additionally, close objects are over-sampled relative to objects that are farther away. These two effects compound to potentially bias the three-dimensional statistics of measured scenes. Previous methods of sampling have resulted in a loss of structural coherence. In this article, a method of sampling is proposed to optimally sample points while preserving the structure of a scene. Points are sampled along a spherical coordinate system, with probabilities modulated by elevation angle and squared distance from the origin. The proposed approach is validated through visual comparison and stem-volume assessment in a challenging mangrove forest in Micronesia. Compared to several well-known sampling techniques, the proposed approach reduces sampling bias and shows strong performance in stem-reconstruction measurement. The proposed sampling method matched or exceeded the stem-volume measurement accuracy across a variety of tested decimation levels. On average it achieved 3.0% higher accuracy at estimating stem volume than the closest competitor. This approach shows promise for improving the evaluation of terrestrial laser-scanning data in complex scenes.

The branches of fruit trees provide support for the growth of leaves, buds, flowers, fruits, and other organs. The number and length of branches guarantee the normal growth, flowering, and fruiting of fruit trees and are thus important indicators of tree growth and yield. However, due to their low height and the high number of branches, the precise management of fruit trees lacks a theoretical basis and data support. In this paper, we introduce a method for extracting topological and structural information on fruit tree branches based on LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point clouds and proved its feasibility for the study of fruit tree branches. The results show that based on Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), the relative errors of branch length and number are 7.43% and 12% for first-order branches, and 16.75% and 9.67% for second-order branches. The accuracy of total branch information can reach 15.34% and 2.89%. We also evaluated the potential of backpack-LiDAR by comparing field measurements and quantitative structural models (QSMs) evaluations of 10 sample trees. This comparison shows that in addition to the first-order branch information, the information about other orders of branches is underestimated to varying degrees. The root means square error (RMSE) of the length and number of the first-order branches were 3.91 and 1.30 m, and the relative root means square error (NRMSE) was 14.62% and 11.96%, respectively. Our work represents the first automated classification of fruit tree branches, which can be used in support of precise fruit tree pruning, quantitative forecast of yield, evaluation of fruit tree growth, and the modern management of orchards.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This paper presents a strategy to measure verticality deviations (i.e. inclination) of tall chimneys. The method uses laser scanning point clouds acquired around the chimney to estimate vertical deviations with millimeter-level precision. Horizontal slices derived from the point cloud allows us to inspect the geometry of the chimney at different heights. Two methods able to estimate the center at different levels are illustrated and discussed. A first solution is a manual approach that uses traditional CAD software, in which circle fitting is manually carried out through point cloud slices. The second method is instead automatic and provides not only center coordinates, but also statistics to evaluate metric quality. Two case studies are used to explain the procedures for the digital survey and the measurement of vertical deviations: the chimney in the old slaughterhouse of Piacenza (Italy), and the chimney in Leonardo Campus at Politecnico di Milano (Italy).</p>

This paper presents an analysis of source photogrammetric data in relation to the examination of verticality in a monumental tower. In the proposed data processing methodology, the geometric quality of the point clouds relating to the monumental tower of the castle in Iłżawas established by using terrestrial laser scanning (Z+F 5006h, Leica C10), terrestrial photographs and digital images sourced via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) (Leica Aibot X6 Hexacopter). Tests were performed using the original software, developed by the authors, which allows for the automation of 3D point cloud processing. The software also facilitates the verification of the verticality of the tower and the assessment of the quality of utilized data.

Interest in small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) for topographic mapping has significantly grown in recent years, driven in part by technological advancements that have made it possible to survey small- to medium-sized areas quickly and at low cost using sUAS aerial photography and digital photogrammetry. Although this approach can produce dense point clouds of topographic measurements, they have not been tested extensively to provide insights on accuracy levels for topographic mapping. This case study examines the accuracy of a sUAS-derived point cloud of a parking lot located at the Citizens Bank Arena (CBA) in Ontario, California, by comparing it to ground control points (GCPs) measured using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data corrected with real-time kinematic (RTK) and to data from a terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) survey. We intentionally chose a flat surface due to the prevalence of flat scenes in sUAS mapping and the challenges they pose for accurately deriving vertical measurements. When the GNSS-RTK survey was compared to the sUAS point cloud, the residuals were found to be on average 18 mm and −20 mm for the horizontal and vertical components. Furthermore, when the sUAS point cloud was compared to the TLS point cloud, the average difference observed in the vertical component was 2 mm with a standard deviation of 31 mm. These results indicate that sUAS imagery can produce point clouds comparable to traditional topographic mapping methods and support other studies showing that sUAS photogrammetry provides a cost-effective, safe, efficient, and accurate solution for topographic mapping.

Abstract The base map provides basic information about land to individuals, companies, developers, design engineers, organizations, and government agencies. Its contents include spatial location data for control network points, buildings, land lots, infrastructure facilities, and topographic features. As the primary map of the country, it must be developed in accordance with specific laws and regulations and be continuously updated. The base map is a data source used for the development and updating of derivative maps and other large scale cartographic materials such as thematic or topographic maps. Thanks to the advancement of science and technology, the quality of land surveys carried out by means of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) matches that of traditional surveying methods in many respects. This paper discusses the potential application of output data from laser scanners (point clouds) to the development and updating of cartographic materials, taking Poland’s base map as an example. A few research sites were chosen to present the method and the process of conducting a TLS land survey: a fragment of a residential area, a street, the surroundings of buildings, and an undeveloped area. The entire map that was drawn as a result of the survey was checked by comparing it to a map obtained from PODGiK (pol. Powiatowy Ośrodek Dokumentacji Geodezyjnej i Kartograficznej – Regional Centre for Geodetic and Cartographic Records) and by conducting a field inspection. An accuracy and quality analysis of the conducted fieldwork and deskwork yielded very good results, which provide solid grounds for predicating that cartographic materials based on a TLS point cloud are a reliable source of information about land. The contents of the map that had been created with the use of the obtained point cloud were very accurately located in space (x, y, z). The conducted accuracy analysis and the inspection of the performed works showed that high quality is characteristic of TLS surveys. The accuracy of determining the location of the various map contents has been estimated at 0.02-0.03 m. The map was developed in conformity with the applicable laws and regulations as well as with best practice requirements.

Measurement using terrestrial laser scanning is performed at several stations to measure an entire object. In order to obtain a complete and uniform point cloud, it is necessary to register each and every scan in one local or global coordinate system. One registration method is based on reference points—in this case, checkerboard targets. The aim of this research was to analyse the accuracy of checkerboard target identification and propose an algorithm to improve the accuracy of target centre identification, particularly for low-resolution and low-quality point clouds. The proposed solution is based on the geometric determination of the target centre. This work presents an outline of a new approach, designed by the author, to discuss the influence of the point cloud parameters on the process of checkerboard centre identification and to propose an improvement in target centre identification. The validation of the proposed solutions reveals that the difference between the typical automatic target identification and the proposed method amounts to a maximum of 6 mm for scans of different qualities. The proposed method may serve as an alternative to, or supplement for, checkerboard identification, particularly when the quality of these scans is not sufficient for automatic algorithms.
