A detrending technique is proposed for continuous-wave (CW) radar to remove the effects of direct current (DC) offset, including DC drift, which is a very slow noise that appears near DC. DC drift is mainly caused by unwanted vibrations (generated by the radar itself, target objects, or surroundings) or characteristic changes in components in the radar owing to internal heating. It reduces the accuracy of the circle fitting method required for I/Q imbalance calibration and DC offset removal. The proposed technique effectively removes DC drift from the time-domain waveform of the baseband signals obtained for a certain time using polynomial fitting. The accuracy improvement in the circle fitting by the proposed technique using a 5.8 GHz CW radar decreases the error in the displacement measurement and increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in vital signal detection. The measurement results using a 5.8 GHz radar show that the proposed technique using a fifth-order polynomial fitting decreased the displacement error from 1.34 mm to 0.62 mm on average when the target was at a distance of 1 m. For a subject at a distance of 0.8 m, the measured SNR improved by 7.2 dB for respiration and 6.6 dB for heartbeat.

Installation and repair of hydraulic installations are carried out by joining the pipes in the field. Pipe connections in aviation are made in a very narrow space and field. For this reason, fitting swaging method is used to connect the fittings to the pipes with a hydraulic hand tool. The basis for developing a swaging tool is knowledge of the design parameters for the plastic deformation of the swaging circle fitting. In addition to the design parameter, pipes have to be joined in cryogenic vacuum conditions, which require sealing in such sensitive and harsh conditions. In this study, the effect of swaged circle fitting designs on tightness and strength was determined and different swaging methods were examined for its improvement. Different geometric swaged circle fittings are designed and analytical and numerical models are solved. The solution results obtained show the characteristic effect of the fitting swaging analysis methodology and the swaged circle fitting design on the sealing of the pipe joint. The innovation is mainly the effect of the swaging circle connection design on the sealing of the pipe joint. With the finding in this work, it is now possible to develop or develop new tools for engineered swaging circle fitting.

Current iris recognition schemes such as IntegroDifferential method, Hough Transform, Watershed Transform Circle Fitting, and Circular Hough Transformation (CHT) are used to find circular parameters between pupil and iris. Segmentation process of an eye image using the circular parameters toextracts the iris region still can be further improved. In this paper, we introduced an optimization method of circular parameters detection for iris segmentation based on Black Hole Algorithm (BHA). The proposed segmentation algorithm utilizes a computational model of the pixels’ value to detect the iris boundary. The BHA searches for center radius of both pupil and iris. The system tests the CASIA Iris Interval V3 database by on MATLAB. The segmented images show an accuracy of 98.3%. In short, the segmentation-based on BHA is efficient to identify the iris for any future access control applications.

The objective of this study was to propose a simple and efficient image processing algorithm for estimating the size and centroid of partially occluded round fruits. In the proposed method, the size and centroid of partially occluded fruit were estimated based on the mathematical properties of the arc-radius. The experimental tests were conducted in a laboratory with orange, Sunkist, apple, and tomato fruits by setting different occlusion conditions. The occlusion percentage was varied between 0% and 90%. The accuracy and processing time of the proposed method were compared with that of the widely-used conic-section circle fitting method. The results showed that the proposed method resulted in an overall accuracy of 95.1% and processing time of 0.66 s, as opposed to 60.2% and 0.68 s, respectively, using the conic-section equation. Compared with the conic-section equation, the proposed method was able to give a more robust prediction, even for low resolution images.

Abstract With the popularization of automounting robots in protein crystal diffraction experiment beamline stations, the coordinate calibration of the robot sample mounting position has become an inevitable task in the daily maintenance of the beamline station. In this method, the image features of the laser sensor spot and goniometer are extracted by color extraction and edge detection, respectively, and the noise is eliminated by median filtering. Then, after locating the pixel coordinates of the center of the circle through the Hough circle detection and the minimum closed circle fitting algorithm, the coordinates in the base coordinate system are obtained using the camera internal and external parameter matrices and the hand-eye relationship matrix. Finally, according to the deviation of the laser spot and the visual positioning coordinate of the goniometer, the position of the robot is compensated to improve the positioning accuracy, and the automatic calibration of the sample point is realized.

Circle-fitting methods are commonly used to estimate diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees from horizontal cross-section of point clouds. In this paper, we addressed the problem of cross-section thickness optimization regarding DBH estimation bias and accuracy. DBH of 121 European beeches (Fagus sylvatica L.) and 43 Sessile oaks (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) was estimated from cross-sections with thicknesses ranging from 1 to 100 cm. The impact of cross-section thickness on the bias, standard error, and accuracy of DBH estimation was statistically significant. However, the biases, standard errors, and accuracies of DBH estimation were not significantly different among 1–10-cm cross-sections, except for oak DBH estimation accuracy from an 8-cm cross-section. DBH estimations from 10–100-cm cross-sections were considerably different. These results provide insight to the influence of cross-section thickness on DBH estimation by circle-fitting methods, which is beneficial for point cloud data acquisition planning and processing. The optimal setting of cross-section thickness facilitates point cloud processing and DBH estimation by circle-fitting algorithms.

In this study, underwater recognition technology and a fuzzy control system were adopted to adjust the attitude and revolution speed of a self-developed autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). To validate the functionality of visual-recognition control, an experiment was conducted in the towing tank at the Department of Systems and Naval Mechatronic Engineering, National Cheng Kung University. An underwater lighting box was towed by a towing carriage at low speed. By adding real-time contour approximation and a circle-fitting algorithm to the image-processing procedure, the relationship between the AUV and the underwater lighting box was calculated. Both rudder plane angles and propeller revolution speeds were determined after the size and location of the lighting box was measured in the image. Finally, AUV performance with visual-recognition control was verified by controlling the target object in the image center during passage.
