There is a lack of research on Korean prospective elderly persons. In particular, there is little research regarding whether social support has a mediating effect on the relationship between physical activity and aging anxiety. Accordingly, this study investigated how social support affected physical activity and aging anxiety in 778 prospective senior citizens (55 to 65 years old) out of a total of 1447 senior citizens who participated in the Embrain Panel Power and Panel Marketing Interactive. Participants completed the IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaires), Social Support Scale, and Aging Anxiety Scale. Physical activity in these Korean pre-older adults affected aging anxiety (p < 0.001), with a fixed effect of physical activity on social support (p < 0.001). Further, social support affected aging anxiety (p < 0.001). Social support was also an important parameter in the relationship between physical activity and aging anxiety. In conclusion, high physical activity of pre-older Korean persons lowered their anxiety regarding aging. Social support acted as a mediator that lowered anxiety regarding aging in the most active pre-older persons.

I explored the relationship between forgiveness and subjective well-being (SWB), and the mediating effect of social support in this relationship. Participants were 443 college students from Henan, China, who completed the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Subjective Well-Being Scale. The results show that both interpersonal forgiveness and self-forgiveness were significantly correlated with SWB. Moreover, social support partially mediated the effects of both self-forgiveness and interpersonal forgiveness on SWB. These findings extend prior research and elucidate how forgiveness can influence SWB in college students.

We evaluated the level of adaptation of city newcomers (CNs) to urban life in China, and their personal well-being, and explored the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between these variables. We used a 2-stage sampling method to recruit 314 participants who completed the Adaptation to Urban Life Scale, Social Support Scale, and Personal Well-Being Scale. Structural equation modeling was used to test full and partial mediation effects. Findings showed that there was a significant correlation between the extent of CNs’ positive adaptation to urban life and their personal well-being. In addition, social support was beneficial for CNs’ personal well-being, and partially mediated the relationship between CNs’ adaptation to urban life and personal well-being. In addition, the adaptation to urban life dimensions of employment prospects, living conditions, and urban environment predicted CNs’ personal well-being. Implications of the findings are discussed, along with directions for future research.

ABSTRACTWhile an association between UI and psychological distress among older adults has been established in the literature, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain less clear. Using a sample of 4,689 older adults from the Canadian Community Health Survey (1.1), we test the potential mediating and moderating effects of four dimensions of social support on the UI–distress relationship. Incontinent older adults are significantly more likely to report higher levels of distress than continent adults. Although we do not find support for a mediating effect of any of the dimensions of social support, we do report a significant interaction between one dimension of social support (tangible support) and UI. A buffering effect of tangible support is evident for continent – but not incontinent – respondents. These findings emphasize the need to assess the types of social support and the context in which they operate.

This study examined the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and prosocial behavior (PSB) and constructed a model for their interaction by examining the mediating effect of social support (SS) and the moderating effect of self-esteem (SE) in this relationship. A total of 742 college students aged from 18 to 20 in Northeast China (Mage =19.42 ± 0.53 years) completed a survey measuring the Emotional Intelligence Scale, Prosocial Tendencies Measurement Scale—Chinese Version, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Self-Esteem Scale. The results showed that: (1) EI positively predicted PSB; (2) SS partially mediated the relationship between EI and PSB; and (3) SE moderated the direct effect of EI on PSB and the relationship between SS and PSB. That is, when the SE of college students was higher, the effect of SS in promoting PSB was enhanced. Therefore, our results suggested that under the influence of both internal and external factors, there is an indirect effect of EI on PSB. This finding may potentially provide a theoretical basis for designing college students' mental health courses and cultivating PSB in college.

Purpose: This study examined the relationship among social support, leisure time physical activity (LTPA), and mental health among people with cancer. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting and participants: Using the 2017 Health Information National Trends Survey, we extracted data of 504 respondents who had been diagnosed with any of the 22 types of cancer listed in the survey questionnaire. Measures: As independent variables, we assessed 3 different types of support: emotional, informational, and tangible support. As mediating and outcome variables, we measured LTPA and mental health, respectively. Analysis: Using AMOS version 22, a path analysis was conducted to measure model fit. A mediation test was then conducted using bootstrapping procedures. Results: The hypothesized model provided an acceptable fit to the data. Specifically, emotional support ( b = .15, p = .005), informational support ( b = .13, p = .008), tangible support ( b = .12, p = .010), and LTPA ( b = .14, p = .001) were significantly associated with mental health. We revealed a significant mediating effect of LPTA on the relationship between emotional support and mental health (Estimate = .037, 95% CI = .001–.098, p < .05). Conclusion: Social support and LTPA played a significant role in promoting mental health among people with cancer. In particular, the results confirmed that individuals with cancer who reported receiving emotional support tended to engage in LTPA and thus reported better mental health.

Our aim was to identify the relationships between self-esteem and social adaptation, and the chain mediating effect of peer trust and perceived social support in this relationship. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Peer Trust Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Scale on Social Adaptability for Secondary School Students were integrated into a paper-and-pencil survey. Participants were 400 adolescents in southwestern China. Results demonstrated that the relationship between self-esteem and social adaptation was partially mediated by peer trust and perceived social support. The results were explained using the ecological systems theory. Self-esteem is inside the core individual; peer trust is in the microsystem and/or mesosystem; perceived social support is in the mesosystem, exosystem, and/or macrosystem. Adolescent social adaptation could be promoted by directly enhancing self-esteem, thus indirectly improving peer trust and perceived social support.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the relationship between well-being and perceived stress, and the functional dimensions of social support in older adults. Method: Data from 306 older adults were obtained in a survey containing the two-way Social Support Scale (2-Way SSS). Also, a subset of the sample ( N = 165) was filled out with measures of well-being and perceived stress, and a follow-up survey was completed 3 months later ( N = 111). Results: Confirmatory factor analyses and reliability analyses provide evidence for a 12-item Brief 2-Way SSS as a reliable and valid measure of the four domains of Social Support. Correlations and regression analyses indicated the scale displayed good concurrent and predictive validity across time points, with receiving emotional support positively associated with well-being at Time 1 (T1) and Time 2 (T2), and Receiving Instrumental Support negatively associated with perceived stress at TI and T2. Conclusions: This study provides support for the importance of examining the influence of separable elements of social support on psychological outcomes in older adults. The Brief 2-Way SSS was found to have good psychometric properties in this sample of older adults.

Objective: The present study examined how expectations regarding aging (ERA) influence physical activity participation and physical function. Method: We surveyed 148 older adults about their ERA (ERA-38), health-promoting lifestyles (HPLP-II), and self-rated health (RAND-36). We tested the mediating effect of physical activity on the relationships between ERA and physical function. Results: Positive expectations were associated with more engagement in physical activity ( B = 0.016, p < .05) and better physical function ( B = 0.521, p < .01). Physical activity mediated the relationship between ERA and physical function ( B = 5.890, p < .01, indirect effect 0.092, CI = [0.015, 0.239]). Discussion: ERA play an important role in adoption of physically active lifestyles in older adults and may influence health outcomes, such as physical function. Future research should evaluate whether attempts to increase physical activity are more successful when modifications to ERA are also targeted.
