Further observations support the role of environmental factors in autoimmune diseases via the alteration of the epigenetic machinery. In this context, ultraviolet light, smoking, chemicals, and psychological stress have been described as likely examples of this phenomenon. For this study, we took advantage of the PRECISESADS IMI project, which gathered joint data from 2500 individuals with systemic autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS), and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), and aimed to determine such epigenetic modifications in SLE, SSc, pSS, and RA patients. Here, we performed a set of measures in several countries from the north and south of Europe. We observed that autoimmune patients from the north of Europe presented a higher hypomethylated profile associated with an increased gene expression than patients from the south. These genes were associated with interferon (IFN) pathways, immunity, and the pathways associated with cellular metabolism. Since the IFN scores were increased in this population, these patients presented a more inflammatory profile. To conclude, the geographical location of patients with autoimmune diseases has an impact on DNA methylation, RNA expression, and immunological profiles.

This article examines the impact of landholding and differences in local economies on age at marriage, on frequency of service and on household size and structure in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Particular stress is placed on the role of economic rather than cultural factors as determinants of regional variations in marriage age and household structures. Households were more complex whenever land, the accumulation of capital and multiple occupations were required for economic activity. Conversely, wage work – whether in fishing or agriculture and regardless of geographical location (for example in eastern as well as western Finland) – favoured the formation of small nuclear households. Some aspects of the family system (servanthood and a late age at marriage) fit the characteristics of the north-west European household system as delineated by John Hajnal and Peter Laslett better than others (frequency of complex households). It is concluded that there is no inevitable correlation between geographic location and the characteristics of a society's family system and that the model of the north-west European household system does not accommodate those societies where people were in a position to build strategies based on the continuous possession of land.

SUMMARY On 28 September 2018, a Mw 7.5 strike-slip earthquake occurred in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, and it unexpectedly triggered a tsunami. To clearly understand the spatiotemporal evolution process of source rupture, we collected the far-field body wave data and utilized the back-projection method together with finite fault inversion method to investigate the rupture kinematics of this earthquake. Results obtained with the two methods have good consistency and complementarity. We hold that the rupture expanded from the epicentre and propagated bilaterally towards the north and south along the strike direction during the first 24 s, and then to the south. Therefore, the whole rupture process consists of two main stages. For the second stage, the fault segment experienced most of the moment release between 0 and 15 km depth, while the fault plane tended to slip at greater depth (down to 20 km) in the first stage. The total length of the rupture was about 200 km and the seismic moment was ∼2.48 × 1020 Nm, which was equivalent to Mw 7.5. The surface rupture was evident and the maximum slip of 6.24 m was observed in the Palu basin, which was close to Palu city. The rupture was dominated by left-lateral strike-slip with both normal and thrust components as well. The normal slip exhibited in the shallow part of the fault on the north side of Palu bay together with the special geographical location of Palu bay likely favored tsunami genesis.

Overall the evolution process of the Red River Delta based on the maps and historical data resulted in a fact that before the 20th century all the Nam Dinh coastline was attributed to accumulation. Then started the erosion process at Xuan Thuydistrict and from the period of 1935 - 1965 the most severe erosion was contributed in the stretch from Ha Lan to Hai Trieu, 1965 - 1990 in Hai Chinh - Hai Hoa, 1990 - 2005 in the middle part of Hai Chinh - Hai Thinh (Hai Hau district). The adjoining stretches were suffered from not severe erosion. At the same time, the Ba Lat mouth is advanced to the sea and to the North and South direction by the time with a very high rate.The first task of the mathematical modeling of coastal line evolution of Hai Hau is to evaluate this important historical marked periods e. g. to model the coastal line at the periods before 1900, 1935 - 1965; 1965 - 1990; 1990 - 2005. The tasks is very complicated and time and working labors consuming.In the paper, the primarily results of the above mentioned simulations (as waves, currents, sediments transports and bottom - coastal lines evolution) has been shown. Based on the obtained results, there is a strong correlation between the protrusion magnitude and the southward moving of the erosion areas.

Some 2,000 Ptiliidae collected in the North and South Islands of New Zealand in 1983/1984 by Peter Hammond of the Natural History Museum, London, are determined to 34 species, four of which are new to the country. As there are very few previous records, most from the Auckland district of North Island, the Hammond collection provides much new distributional data. The three new species: Nellosana insperatus sp. n., Notoptenidium flavum sp. n., and Notoptenidium johnsoni sp. n., are described and figured; the genus Ptiliodes is moved from Acrotrichinae to Ptiliinae, and Ptenidium formicetorum Kraatz recorded as a new introduction. Information is provided to aid separation of the new species from those previously recorded.

North and South Atlantic lateral volume exchange is a key component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) embedded in Earth’s climate. Northward AMOC heat transport within this exchange mitigates the large heat loss to the atmosphere in the northern North Atlantic. Because of inadequate climate data, observational basin-scale studies of net interbasin exchange between the North and South Atlantic have been limited. Here ten independent climate datasets, five satellite-derived and five analyses, are synthesized to show that North and South Atlantic climatological net lateral volume exchange is partitioned into two seasonal regimes. From late-May to late-November, net lateral volume flux is from the North to the South Atlantic; whereas from late-November to late-May, net lateral volume flux is from the South to the North Atlantic. This climatological characterization offers a framework for assessing seasonal variations in these basins and provides a constraint for climate models that simulate AMOC dynamics.
