Marine lubricating oil (LO) is deteriorated by contaminants—especially marine gas oil (MGO), which is invariably mixed during its usage—that can damage engine performance. This study investigates a method for determining the content of MGO in lubricating oil. Weight loss from MGO-containing lubricant was evaluated through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and a standard calibration curve was plotted to establish a correlation with MGO content. A comparison of the commonly used ASTM–based gas chromatography (GC) analysis, and this TGA approach revealed that the former was more accurate when the lubricant contained ≤1% MGO; however, TGA afforded higher accuracy when the MGO content was between 0.5% and 15%. Hence, TGA can be used as a simple, reliable, and rapid method to analyze the contents of a lubricant contaminant such as MGO.

Abstract A capillary gas chromatographic (GC) method was developed for the quantitation of cis-9-tricosene in technical material. This method is capable of resolving cis-9-tricosene from the trans-9-tricosene isomer and other impurities in technical 9-tricosene. Samples are dissolved in methylene chloride and analyzed by splitless GC using docosane as an internal standard. The integrity and purity of the peak of interest were confirmed by GC/mass spectrometry. The overall recovery of this method was 101.3 ± 0.82%. The correlation coefficient of the standard calibration curve was 0.9999. The system and method precision for cis-9-tricosene were 0.18 and 0.20%, respectively. The reproducibility of the method by different analysts was within 0.5%.

Abstract A simple and rapid method has been developed for the determination of allicin in garlic and commercial garlic products by gas chromatography (GC) with flame photometric detection. Samples containing allicin are homogenized with distilled water and centrifuged. An aliquot of the superaate is cleaned up on an Extrelut column using diethyl ether as an eluant. The GC separation is carried out on a 1% OV-1 or 2% Advance DS+ H3P 0 4 column. The calibration curve was rectilinear in the range from 0.2 to 2.0 pg/mL. The overall recovery of allicin added to garlic and garlic products at 0.4 mg/g was more than 84% with a detection limit of 0.02 mg/g. Allicin was found in spices; whereas, no allicin was found in garlic products marketed as health foods.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the thermal stability and monomer elution of bulk fill composite resins cured at different irradiation distances. Materials and Methods: Forty cylindrical-shaped (3×4mm) specimens were fabricated from two composite resins (X-tra fil, X-tra base) and cured from 0 and 7mm distances. In 9 specimens, the degree of conversion was determined by the release of monomers. For this purpose, after curing of composites, they were immersed in 5 mL of 99.9% methanol and stored at 37°C for 24h. The eluted monomer was then analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). Also, thermal stability of one sample from each group was assessed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at a rate of 10°C/min. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test (P<0.05). Results: X-tra fil had significantly higher degree of conversion than X-tra base (P=0.001). Specimens cured at 7mm distance had significantly lower degree of conversion compared with those cured at 0 mm distance (P=0.001). The interaction effect of composite type and distance of light curing unit from the surface of samples was statistically significant (P=0.001). Regarding the TGA results, the lowest and the highest percentages of weight loss were detected in X-tra fil cured at 0 mm distance and X-tra base cured at 7mm distance, respectively. Conclusion: X-tra fil composite cured at 0mm distance had the highest degree of conversion and thermal stability, and X-tra base composite cured at 7mm distance had the lowest values.

Biofuels based on vegetable oils offer the advantage being a sustainable and environmentally attractive alternative to conventional petroleum based fuel. The key issue in using vegetable oil-based fuels is oxidation stability, stoichiometric point, bio-fuel composition, antioxidants on the degradation and much oxygen with comparing to diesel gas oil. This provides a critical review of current understanding of main factor in storage method which affecting the biodiesel properties and characteristics. In the quest for fulfill the industry specifications standard; the fuel should be stored in a clean, dry and dark environment. Water and sediment contamination are basically housekeeping issues for biodiesel. Degradation by oxidation yields products that may compromise fuel properties, impair fuel quality and engine performance. The effect of storage method on the fuel properties and burning process in biodiesel fuel combustion will strongly affects the exhaust emissions.

In this study, the effect of SBR concentration (10 Phr, 20 Phr & 30 Phr ) on the thermal behavior of EPDM/SBR blends was studied. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to check weight loss of samples as function of temperature by heating upto 600°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to determine quality and % crystallinity of the elastomer blends. It was seen that % crystallinity improved with an increase in the content of SBR in EPDM/SBR blends. TGA revealed that the thermal stability of EPDM/SBR blends has improved by 17% than neat EPDM. Carbon nano-coatings produced by sputtering have no beneficial influence on thermal behaviour of elastomers.
