AlMgTi-based metal–intermetallic laminated composites were successfully fabricated through an innovative dual-step vacuum hot pressing. First, this study prepares the AlTi-based laminated composites by vacuum hot pressing at 650 °C. Then, the researchers place the Mg-Al-1Zn (AZ31) magnesium alloy between the prepared AlTi-based laminated composites at 430 °C for hot pressing. This study investigates the microstructure, phase composition, and microhardness distribution across interfaces of the intermetallics and metal. A multilayer phase (Mg17Al12, Al3Mg2, and transition layers) structure can be found from the diffusion layers between Al and AZ31. The microhardness of the material presents a wavy distribution in the direction perpendicular to the layers; the maximum can be up to 600.0 HV0.2 with a minimum of 28.7 HV0.2 The microhardness gradient of an AlMgTi-based composite is smoother due to the different microhardness of the layers, and reduces the interface stress concentration. The bending strength of AlMgTi-based composites can reach 265 MPa, and the specific strength is 105 × 103 Nm/kg, higher than AlTi-based composites.

Fiber-reinforced laminated composite is often used in harsh environments that may affect their static stability and long-term durability as well as residual strength. In this study, the effect of heavy chemical environments such as acid and alkaline and retaining time for these environments on flexural strength and flexural fatigue behavior of carbon/epoxy laminated composites were investigated. In this context, carbon/epoxy was retained into an acidic and alkaline solution having 5%, 15%, and 25% concentration by weight for 1–4 months. Fatigue behavior of carbon/epoxy was determined under dynamic flexural load, which corresponds to 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, and 40% of static three-point bending strength of the test sample. SEM image of damaged specimens was taken to describe the failure mechanism of damage which occurs after fatigue. Also, to better understand environmental condition on the fatigue life, results were compared with results of carbon/epoxy laminated composites, which were not retained into any environments (unretained). The test results showed that the solution type, solution concentration, and retaining time caused noticeable changes in the static and dynamic strengths of carbon/epoxy laminated composites.

The influence of pressure on the crystallization behavior in SiO2f/SiO2 composites hotpressed at 1350°C was studied. The crystalline phase composition analysis on SiO2f/SiO2 composites revealed that the formation of cristobalite was promoted when the hot-pressing pressure ≤ 12 MPa, however suppressed with higher pressure applied. It can be ascribed to the nucleation mechanism change from surface nucleation to bulk nucleation. Analysis on relative density as well as fracture microstructure of SiO2f/SiO2 composites confirmed the conclusion.
