We report on self-propelled rotating liquid marbles fabricated using droplets of alcoholic solution encapsulated in hollow microtetrapods of GaN with hydrophilic free ends of their arms and hydrophobic lateral walls. Apart from stationary rotation, elongated-spheroid-like liquid marbles were found, for the first time, to exhibit pulsed rotation on water surfaces characterized by a threshold speed of rotation, which increased with the weight of the liquid marble while the frequency of pulses proved to decrease. To throw light upon the unusual behavior of the developed self-propelled liquid marbles, we propose a model which takes into account skimming of the liquid marbles over the water surface similar to that inherent to flying water lily beetle and the so-called helicopter effect, causing a liquid marble to rise above the level of the water surface when rotating.

In this paper we describe and illustrate for the first time the immature forms (larva and pupa) of Ora semibrunnea Pic, 1922, including biological information and behavior observed in the laboratory. This is the first record of the occurrence of this species in the Brazilian Amazon region. Larvae and pupae were found in natural lakes associated with macrophyte banks. Pupae are aquatic and have morphological adaptations (well-developed pronotal siphons) to obtain atmospheric O2 at the water surface.

The suborder Mygalomorphae is generally poorly represented in the cave faunas of the world. The genus Hemirrhagus is endemic to Mexico and has 22 described species. It is the only one with epigean, troglophile and troglobitic species. Lack of urticating setae, loss of eye pigmentation and ocular reduction are interpreted as evolutionary reversals related to their troglobitic habits. From five troglobitic species in the genus, only the male of Hemirrhagus stygius is known. Five new troglobitic species are described with both sexes: Hemirrhagus akheronteus sp. nov., Hemirrhagus billsteelei sp. nov., Hemirrhaugus diablo sp. nov., Hemirrhagus kalebi sp. nov. and Hemirrhagus sprousei sp. nov. The female of Hemirrhagus chilango is described for the first time. Hemirrhagus akheronteus sp. nov. has a group of spinose setae on the opisthosoma; this setal modification was never reported in any other theraphosid spiders. Females of Hemirrhagus kalebi sp. nov. and Hemirrhagus sprousei sp. nov. lay fixed hammock egg sacs, which is an unusual behavior among species in Theraphosinae. Two stridulating setae previously reported only in epigean species are present on some of the new troglobites.

Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), commonly known as the black twig borer, was reported in Sicily (Italy) at the end of 2016, infesting Carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) twigs, large branches, and trunks. Previous research indicated that X. compactus attacks only small twigs and branches, not large branches and tree trunks. This unusual behavior was monitored through the two following years in five sites in Ragusa province (Sicily, Italy). For each of the monitored sites, the diameter of the infested trunks and branches was recorded. Samples of branches and trunks presenting galleries were removed from the trees and analyzed in the laboratory. Xylosandrus compactus occurred on branches of all monitored trees, while the percentage of infested trunks of carob trees ranged from 60% to 80%. Inside the infested galleries, all biological stages of X. compactus were found. Infestations were also recorded on trunks and branches with diameters greater than 80 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The mean number of X. compactus specimens inside the galleries was recorded and gallery shape was described. Unordinary behaviors, like the one described here for the first time, can affect the current efficiency of management recommendations.

Liquid marbles are liquid drops made non-wetting by the use of a powder which coats them. Because of the absence of a contact line, quick motions without leakage of small amounts of liquid are allowed, which can be of interest in microfluidic applications. After characterizing the static liquid marble, we focus on its properties and study experimentally the viscous motion of liquid marbles. Then, we describe qualitatively possible ways for putting marbles into motion and quantify the robustness of this object.

Background: Ordered arrays of 1D iron(oxyhydr)oxide nanostructures have potential applications in magnetic recording mediums, lithium batteries, supercapacitors, and thermal production of α-, β-, γ-type Fe2O3. Large surface areas with three-dimensional architectures, such as nanotubes, are encouraged because the easy access of ion, gas, liquid and radiation assures high ion exchange capacity, sensing and catalytic activities. Objective: In this work, the morphological evolution of Fe-oxyhydroxide electrodeposition inside AAM pores has been followed for the first time by selecting two relevant electrochemical conditions of synthesis producing high quality morphologies of nanotubes. Methods: Iron(oxyhydr)oxide nanotubes have been synthesized by cathodic electrodeposition at a constant current in classic three-electrode cell. Two different electrolytic baths have been studied: (i) an aqueous bath consisting of 5 mM FeCl3+5 mM KF+0.1 M KCl+1 M H2O2 (H-Fe) and (ii) an ethanolic bath consisting of 0.3 M FeCl3 + 0.1 M KCl (Et-Fe). Results: XRD, Raman and SEM results on the iron(oxyhydr)oxide nanotubes suggest different mechanisms of chemical precipitation mechanisms in Et-Fe alcoholic solution (dehydration and rearrangement within the ferrihydrite aggregates) and H-Fe aqueous solution (dissolution/ reprecipitation). The morphological evolution of the growing nanostructure to nanotubes inside AAM in the two baths agrees very well with the overpotential vs. time curves, the kinetic growth of the nanotubes arrays and a growth mechanism governed by the relative mass transfer processes involving both OH- and Fe ions. Conclusion: The morphological evolution of Fe-oxyhydroxide cathodic electroprecipitation inside AAM pores in two relevant electrochemical baths containing Fe(III) (aqueous/H-Fe and alcoholic/Et- Fe) has been followed for the first time by a comprehensive SEM analysis accompanied by electrochemical, structural and kinetic growth of the nano-electrodeposits. : The detailed SEM results collected in this work allowed to recommend template electrogeneration of base in ethanol solution containing Fe(III) chloride as a relevant procedure to obtain high-quality, compact and well-ordered Fe oxy-hydroxide nanotubes.

We study the flotation of deformable, non-wetting drops at a liquid interface – a scenario that may be observed with a liquid marble floating on water, Leidenfrost drops, or by making the interface itself hydrophobic.
