The precision spool valve is the core component of the electro-hydraulic servo control system, and its performance has an important influence on the flight control of aviation and aerospace products. The non-uniform surface topography error causes a non-uniform mating gap field inside the spool valve, which causes oil leakage and leads to deterioration of the spool valve performance. However, the current oil leakage calculation method only considers the influence of size errors, which is not comprehensive. Thus, how to characterize the mating behavior of the spool valve and its effect on oil leakage with consideration of surface topography errors is the key to evaluating the performance of the spool valve. This paper proposes a new way of analyzing the mating performance of precision spool valves, which considers the surface topography errors based on digital twin technology. Firstly, a general framework for the analysis of mating performance of precision spool valve based on a digital twin is proposed. Then, key technologies of assembly interface geometry modeling, matching behavior modeling and performance analysis are studied. Finally, a quantitative correlation between the mating parameters and the oil leakage of the precision spool valve is revealed. The method is tested on a practical case. This proposed method can provide theoretical support for the accurate prediction and evaluation of the mating performance of the precision spool valve.

Spool valves are the main elements in electro-hydro servo valves. Hydraulic measurement is an important method for spool valve’s null cutting measuring process. Because of the flow pattern transition, the discharge coefficient is a variable. This phenomenon causes errors if we assume the discharge coefficient is a constant as we always do. In this paper, the variable discharge coefficient is considered to the submerged discharge equation, and the flow pattern error is defined. For improving the precision of overlap values measurements, a compensation method of flow pattern error is presented in this paper.

Abstract In many applications, digital valves driven from stepping motors are often characterized by quantitative errors and in some cases, slow response. A new means of direct digital control is introduced for a spool valve actuated by a stepper motor. With this control strategy, both excellent speed of response and accuracy are simultaneously sustained for the valve. By way of illustration, the characteristics of a digital spool valve are theoretically and experimentally investigated. This paper also deals with the design of the controller and some concepts concerning the digital control of a valve, such as initialization, false protection, etc. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this digital control approach for a practical electro-hydraulic control system.

Abstract This paper presents the design and modeling process of a flight control actuator using digital hydraulics and a performance analysis that compares the proposed solution and the Servo Hydraulic Actuator (SHA) on a fighter aircraft model. The proposed solution is named Digital Hydraulic Actuator (DHA) and comprises the use of a multi-chamber cylinder controlled by on/off valves and different pressures sources provided by a centralized hydraulic power unit, as proposed in the Fly-by-Wire (FbW) concept. The analyses were carried out using the Aero-Data Model in a Research Environment (ADMIRE), which was developed for flight performance analysis. The actuators were modeled using the software Matlab/Simulink® and Hopsan. They were applied to control the aircraft elevons in a flight mission close to the aircraft limits, to evaluate the actuator’s behavior and energy efficiency. The results show a reduction in energy dissipation up to 22.3 times when comparing the DHA with the SHA, and despite the overshooting and oscillations presented, the aircraft flight stability was not affected.

This paper presents some results from an attempt to characterize hydraulic oil flow inside spool valves with different spool metering notches using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Hydraulic spool valve oil flow under different conditions has been simulated using a commercially available CFD software program. The fluid flow is assumed steady-state, incompressible, isothermal and normally in a turbulent mode. A complete simulation procedure is presented from parametric geometry creation with a 3-D solid CAD program through final post-processing of CFD results. Main focus of this study is to explore the effects of geometric parameters of notches on important hydraulic oil flow characteristics, such as flow force and discharge coefficients. Formulas, intended for predicting such flow forces and discharge coefficients at different stage of spool notch openings, have been generalized and summarized under certain conditions based on a CFD result database from groups of same types of notches. Results comparison to experimental data is also presented.

In order to amend the defects of existing similarity measure formula between vague sets, a new definition of similarity measure between vague sets is proposed and a new formula with higher resolution and highlighted uncertainty is presented on the basis of data mining vague value method. A general fault diagnosis method of Vague sets (GFDMVS) is proposed. The same practical case is studied with three methods and the results demonstrate the validity and reasonability of the method proposed in this paper.
