Doping rare-earth ions into spinel ferrites can alter their electrical and magnetic properties. The present study delineates the structure–property relationship of the effect of rare-earth terbium doping in NiFe2O4 ferrite. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed unit cell lattice expansion with increased Tb3+ content. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate preferential occupancy of Tb3+ at the octahedral B site. The magnetic parameters derived from room temperature hysteresis loops where both the saturation magnetization, Ms, and coercivity, Hc, value decreased with the Tb3+ substitution and reached a minimum value of Ms ~30.6 emu/g at x = 0.1 and Hc ~102 Oe at x = 0.075. The temperature-dependent magnetocrystalline anisotropy derived from the magnetic isotherm was observed to be the highest for x = 0.1 at 5 K with the value K1 ~1.09 × 106 J/m3. The Tb3+ doping also resulted in the Curie temperature reduction from 938 K at x = 0.0 to 899 K at x = 0.1.

In this paper, we investigated the influence of rare earth ([Formula: see text] and Gd) doped Ba[Formula: see text]RE[Formula: see text]Ca[Formula: see text]Ti[Formula: see text] Mn[Formula: see text]Nb[Formula: see text]Zr[Formula: see text]O3 (BCTMNZ) ceramics were fabricated by using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The doping effects of La and Gd on the structural and magnetic properties were studied. The structural pattern of the ceramic samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction and the results indicated that both samples shows an orthorhombic structure with pure phase. Strain and crystalline size values for Gd and La doped were 0.31–0.33% and [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text]m, respectively. The room temperature hysteresis loops were obtained by using a vibrating sample magnetometer. La doped ceramic showed the higher value of magnetization i.e., [Formula: see text]B/f.u. as compared to Gd doped BLTMNZ ceramics.

We measured the M-H hysteresis loops of n YBa 2 Cu 3 O x: Ag (n = 3, 5, and 7) and 3RBa 2 Cu 3 O x: Ag (R = Gd and Eu) as a function of temperature, and found that the residual magnetization and, hence, pinning is independent of n and the rare-earth ions (R and Y), but depends greatly on the processing conditions. These samples exhibit the strongest pinning force for high-temperature superconductors developed to date.

Three new iron(II) 1D coordination polymers with cooperative spin crossover behavior showing thermal hysteresis loops were synthesized using N2O2 Schiff base-like equatorial ligands and 4,4′-dipyridylethyne as a bridging, rigid axial linker. One of those iron(II) 1D coordination polymers showed a 73 K wide hysteresis below room temperature, which, upon solvent loss, decreased to a still remarkable 30 K wide hysteresis. Single crystal X-ray structures of two iron(II) coordination polymers and T-dependent powder XRD patterns are discussed to obtain insight into the structure property relationship of those materials.

There has been considerable interest over the past several years in materials capable of converting infrared radiation to visible light by means of sequential excitation in two or more steps. Several rare-earth trifluorides (LaF3, YF3, GdF3, and LuF3) containing a small amount of other trivalent rare-earth ions (Yb3+ and Er3+, or Ho3+, or Tm3+) have been found to exhibit such phenomenon. The methods of preparation of these rare-earth fluorides in the crystalline solid form generally involve a co-precipitation process and a subsequent solid state reaction at elevated temperatures. This investigation was undertaken to examine the morphological features of both the precipitated and the thermally treated fluoride powders by both transmission and scanning electron microscopy.Rare-earth oxides of stoichiometric composition were dissolved in nitric acid and the mixed rare-earth fluoride was then coprecipitated out as fine granules by the addition of excess hydrofluoric acid. The precipitated rare-earth fluorides were washed with water, separated from the aqueous solution, and oven-dried.

Background: Rare earth materials are known for its salient electrical insulation properties with high values of electrical resistivity. It is expected that the substitution of rare earth ions into spinel ferrites could significantly alter its magnetic properties. In this work, the effect of the addition of Samarium ions on the structural, morphological and magnetic properties of Ni0.5Zn0.5SmxFe2-xO4 (x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) synthesized using sol-gel auto combustion technique was investigated. Methods: A series of Samarium-substituted Ni-Zn ferrite nanoparticles (Ni0.5Zn0.5SmxFe2-xO4 where x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) were synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion technique. Structural, morphological and magnetic properties of the samples were examined through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) measurements. Results: XRD patterns revealed single-phased samples with spinel cubic structure up to x= 0.04. The average crystallite size of the samples varied in the range of 41.8 – 85.6 nm. The prepared samples exhibited agglomerated particles with larger grain size observed in Sm-substituted Ni-Zn ferrite as compared to the unsubstituted sample. The prepared samples exhibited typical soft magnetic behavior as evidenced by the small coercivity field. The magnetic saturation, Ms values decreased as the Sm3+ concentration increases. Conclusion: The substituted Ni-Zn ferrites form agglomerated particles inching towards more uniform microstructure with each increase in Sm3+ substitution. The saturation magnetization of substituted samples decreases with the increase of samarium ion concentration. The decrease in saturation magnetization can be explained based on weak super exchange interaction between A and B sites. The difference in magnetic properties between the samples despite the slight difference in Sm3+ concentrations suggests that the properties of the NiZnFe2O4 can be ‘tuned’, depending on the present need, through the substitution of Fe3+ with rare earth ions.
