This paper presents the results of forced wear simulation of the friction lift guide rails. The forced wear in the case discussed is an effect of plastic strain of the guide rail surface due to emergency braking of the lift. For the purpose of qualitative and quantitative assessment of wear, the authors applied the numerical simulation of a stray magnetic field. Application of this method allowed evaluating the degree of wear based on the stray field changes. Application of this simulation method allowed obtaining satisfactory results of qualitative and quantitative assessment of the guide rail wear. The intention of this paper was to prove that the permanent magnetic field and the stray field can be applied for the efficient detection of the steel guide rail damages and to verify the possibility of making the quantitative assessment related to the guide rail wear degree versus the personal lift service life.

Magneto-rheological abrasive honing (MRAH) is an unconventional surface finishing technique that relies on abrasives mixed with a unique finishing fluid, which changes its characteristics on magnetic field application. This process imparts nanometric-level surface finish with a significant amount of uniformity. Rotating motion of the workpiece and continuous reciprocation of the finishing fluid in the MRAH process are recognized as the major aspects for adopting this process in finishing non-magnetic materials. The finishing obtained through the MRAH process relies on the workpiece’s material properties and process parameters such as concentration of abrasives in finishing fluid, rotational speed of the workpiece, and magnetic field strength/magnetizing current. To study the efficacy of MRAH process, a parametric study was conducted by performing few experiments on a brass workpiece. Design of experiment approach was adopted to plan the experiments, and the effect of different values of magnetizing current, the concentration of abrasives, and rotational speed on the surface finish were analyzed through the application of analysis of variance (ANOVA). From ANOVA, the rotational speed was found as the most significant parameter with a contribution of 48.90% on % reduction in roughness value (%∇Ra). Around 57% of roughness reduction was obtained at the optimized value of process parameters.

Water salinity and hardness have been regarded as main limitation for field application of polymer floods. It causes not only reduction of polymer concentration, but also injectivity loss in the near wellbore. Based on the mathematical and chemical theory, extensive numerical simulations were conducted to investigate performance of polymer floods in the high-salinity reservoirs. According to results from simulations, the high salinity reduces the viscosity of polymer in contacting area. That causes a poor sweep efficiency of polymer flooding. Moreover, the presence of divalent cations makes the project of polymer flooding worse. That is because of excessively increased bottom-hole pressure in injection well by the precipitation of polymer. The quantitative assessment of polymer floods needs to be required before field application. Therefore, the results in this paper are helpful for optimal polymer flooding design under harsh reservoir conditions.
