AbstractThe three essays that comprise this section of this issue began as conference papers delivered at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in January 2008, Washington, D.C. The panel was organized by Professor Samuel Yamashita of Pomona College, a longtime advocate of forging links between the fields of Asian Studies and Asian American Studies. In his usual gentle way, Sam Yamashita brought the panelists together, took care of the panel proposal, and then stepped aside and let these younger scholars take the floor. Over drinks after the panel, we all came to realize that Madeline Hsu and Catherine Ceniza Choy had both been students of Sam's as undergraduates. Charles Hayford approached Sam about creating a special issue of this journal based on the panel, and I, as the panel's discussant would serve as guest editor. Charles later suggested that we dedicate this issue to Sam as a token of our appreciation for his scholarship and mentorship. And we do so with great pleasure.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce the three best papers selected from the papers presented at CLEI 2006 in Santiago, Chile. Following well established tradition, CLEI invited the top papers of the conference for consideration as best papers in a special issue of the CLEI Electronic Journal. For the purpose of selecting these papers, the Comité Directivo of CLEI named a committee consisting of Diego Andrade (Ecuador), Ernst Leiss (USA), José Carlos Maldonado (Brazil), Marcello Visconti (Chile); and Adenilso Simão (Brazil). After a careful review of the ranking obtained from the Program Committee of CLEI 2006, the group agreed to invite six papers. The authors of four papers decided to accept our invitation. These papers were subjected to a further review resulting in the three papers that form this special issue. On behalf of the selection committee, we would like to thank all people involved in this undertaking, from the authors to the reviewers, and also the SBC – Sociedade Brasileira de Computação for providing the submission system

It is our great pleasure to dedicate this special issue of Journal of Plasma Physics to our dear friend and colleague Professor Padma Kant Shukla on the occasion of his 60th birthday on 7th July 2010. Padma is one of the most prominent and productive scientists in plasma physics and in neighboring fields, and has published more than 1300 papers in scientific journals. It has for some time been the aim of his friends to honor him on this occasion, and earlier this year we sent out invitations to distinguished scientists who have collaborated with Padma over the years. The response has been overwhelming, and we collected 43 manuscripts, covering a diverse range of topics in plasma physics, which are now published in this issue. We believe that these papers reflect some of the impact of Padma's research in plasma physics.

It is a great pleasure for us to introduce this issue of the IJSG, which is dedicated to the Games and Learning Alliance Conference (GaLA Conf) that was held in Athens, November 27-29, 2019. Almost 70 participants converged in this beautiful, historic city in order to share knowledge and experiences related to serious games and gamification, their techniques and their application. A number of the best conference papers were selected, and the authors were invited to extend their paper with at least one-third new content, and to submit their paper to IJSG for a regular peer-review process. This issue contains three of the resulting articles, which gives an overview of the rich field of serious games.

It is with great pleasure that I am writing this introduction to this special issue of Stream: Culture/Politics/Technology dedicated to the conference proceedings of the Graduate Masters Sessions (GMS) hosted by the Canadian Communication Association/Association Canadian de Communication (CCA-ACC) at our annual meeting with the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Calgary in 2016. As the former President of the CCA (2014-2016), I worked for several years as a champion of the Graduate Masters Session, seeing them as a vital means of professionalizing young scholars in our discipline. Not only an opportunity for master’s students to “experience” a large conference and develop the skills necessary present their research to a conference audience, the GMS provide early graduate students with an important opportunity to network, build a community, and see how their work participates in a conversation with students and more senior scholars of communication from across Canada. I have been delighted to oversee the GMS sessions over the last few years, in no small part because I, like my colleagues on the Board of the CCA, value that conversation and the critical contributions made at our annual meetings. Sibo Chen, the English Language Graduate Student Representative on the CCA Board (2015-2017), is to be credited with the idea to produce conference proceedings of the GMS as without his focused energy it would never have gotten off the ground. Further thanks must be extended to the Guest Editors for this issue, Philippa Adam, Chris Chapman, and Dugan Nichols of Simon Fraser University, for their work in cultivating the four papers that appear here. Their work has undoubtedly contributed greatly to the further professionalization of the contributors as they embark on extending the dissemination of their research through publication.
