In this paper, a model to predict the thermal effects in a flashlamp-pumped direct-liquid-cooled split-disk Nd:LuAG ceramic laser amplifier has been presented. In addition to pumping distribution, the model calculates thermal-induced wavefront aberration as a function of temperature, thermal stress and thermal deformation in the gain medium. Experimental measurements are carried out to assess the accuracy of the model. We expect that this study will assist in the design and optimization of high-energy lasers operated at repetition rate.

Thermal stress can induce birefringence in a laser medium, which can cause depolarization of the laser. The depolarization effect will be very severe in a high-average-power laser. Because the depolarization will make the frequency doubling efficiency decline, it should be compensated. In this paper, the thermal characteristics of two kinds of materials are analyzed in respect of temperature, thermal deformation and thermal stress. The depolarization result from thermal stress was simulated. Depolarization on non-uniform pumping was also simulated, and the compensation method is discussed.

We demonstrate a laser diode end-pumped helium gas-cooled multislab Nd:glass laser amplifier. The design and thermal management of the proposed laser amplifier are discussed. The thermally induced wavefront aberration of the slabs was also measured and compared with simulation results. A small-signal single-pass longitudinal gain of 1.8 was measured with a pump energy of 7.3 J. With an injected seed energy of 0.6 mJ, the output energy from the amplifier reached 0.5 J at 0.2 Hz and 0.43 J at 0.5 Hz in a multipass extraction geometry, thus demonstrating the feasibility of diode-pumped, high-energy lasers with direct gas cooling.

We address the power scaling issue in end-pumped laser rod amplifiers by studying, experimentally and numerically, the magnitude of thermal lensing in a high-energy diode-pumped Yb:YAG crystal. The spatio-temporal temperature profile of the gain medium and the focal length of the induced thermal lens are determined numerically. The influence of the repetition rate and pumping power on the temperature distribution is analyzed. Experimental measurements covered repetition rates between 1 and 10 Hz and up to 4 kW pumping power.

Maximum local thermal effects carpet plots for symmetric laminated composite plates used in the design and optimization for material under heat loads are produced and demonstrated. The independent variables considered in this paper are the proportions of 0, 45, and 90 degrees ply orientations in the laminates. The carpet plots are presented in such a way that when the failure stress or strain of a composite lamina is known, all possible safe ply orientation proportion can be determined. In addition, the dependency of the carpet plots in correspondence to the temperature change is investigated. It is found that the shapes of both thermal stress and strain plots are practically identical.

In this paper, a comparative thermal analysis is carried out according to the bottom of HR-FD51 electric cooker liner about a large or small fillet. And then the thermal analysis results are applied to stress analysis as the body loads. The results show that it can reduce thermal stress and total deformation with a large fillet, thereby, improves the lifespan of electric cooker liner and thermal effects as well.

Abstract Continuous pasteurization of liquid foods has to provide the desired lethality level to guarantee food safety with minimum degradation of quality attributes (sensorial and nutritional characteristics) and high energy efficiency. To optimize quality and cost, a thermal process should be modeled considering flow, heat transfer and mass dispersion principles; however, flow through helical tubes and microwave heating require a complex 3D multiphysics approach. Herein a simplified 2D approach is presented to model a hybrid pasteurization unit with conventional and microwave heating under laminar flow to predict axial and radial distributions of temperature and residual activity of a microorganism or enzyme. A study case of 20 °Brix mango puree (power law fluid) processing is used to test the model based on an existing pilot plant unit. Results were useful to compare conventional and microwave heating regarding the process sterilization value and model can be used for process analysis, design and optimization.

ABSTRACTWe report experimental measurements of the adhesion force between metallic substrates in undersaturated heptane vapor atmosphere, with a surface force apparatus. The attractive force between the substrates is strongly dependant of the condensation of a liquid bridge connecting the surfaces. The results show the importance of wetting phenomena for the maximum attractive force: we find that this maximum attraction varies as the power two-third of the curvature of the meniscus connecting the surfaces, in good agreement with the theory of Van der Waals wetting.
