The plastic deformation behaviors of crystalline materials are usually determined by lattice dislocations. However, below a certain particle or grain size, focus is placed on the grain-boundary-mediated mechanisms (e.g., grain rotation, grain boundary sliding, and diffusion), which has been observed during recrystallization, grain growth, and plastic deformation. However, the underlying mechanisms of grain rotation remain to be studied. In this article, we review the theoretical models, molecular dynamics simulations, and experimental investigations on grain rotation. Especially, the development of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray characterization methods for probing grain boundary processes during plastic deformation provides a better understanding of the mechanisms of grain rotation. Moreover, the ability to acquire high-quality X-ray diffraction patterns from individual nanograins is expected to find broad applications in various fields such as physics, chemistry, materials science, physics, and nanoscience.

Abstract In this paper, the mechanical behavior of gradient nano-grained copper under uniaxial deformation was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The stress response was found to be different in the regions with different grain sizes, which was attributed to the different dislocation activities due to the dislocation-grain boundary synergies. The phenomenon of grain rotation was observed and a program was developed to accurately evaluate the grain rotation and explore its dependence on the grain size and the initial crystal orientation. It is found that all grains tend to rotate to the 30° orientation, consistent with the activation theory of the slip systems under the uniaxial deformation. The rotation magnitude is larger for larger grains, but the rotation rate is more diversely distributed for smaller grains, indicating more disturbance from grain boundary mechanisms such as the grain boundary sliding and the grain boundary diffusion for smaller grains. The effect of temperature on the grain rotation is also investigated, showing an increase of the dispersion of grain rotation distribution with the increase of temperature. This paper aims at providing insights into the synergistic deformation mechanisms from dislocations and grain boundaries accounting for the exceptional ductility of the gradient nano-grained metals.

ABSTRACTMolecular dynamics computer simulations of low temperature elastic and plastic deformation of Ni nanophase samples with several mean grain size in the range 3–5 nm are reported. The samples are polycrystals nucleated from different seeds, with random locations and orientations. Bulk and Young modulus are calculated from stress-strain curves and the onsett of plastic deformation is discussed. At higher loads substantial difference in the plastic behaviour with respect to the coarse grain counterpart is observed: among the mechanism responsible for the deformation, grain boundary sliding and motion, as well as grain rotation are identified. An interpretation in terms of grain boundary viscosity is proposed and a linear dependence of strain rate with the inverse of the grain size is obtained.

In this review the investigations of deformation process development are discussed which were carried out by tension and creep in the temperature range Т<0.4Tm (here Тm is the absolute melting point of material) for nanostructured metals produced by the methods of severe plastic deformation. The contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total deformation in the above temperature interval is also considered. An analysis is made of the effect of grain size and grain boundary state on the evolution of grain boundary sliding and cooperative grain boundary sliding in nanostructured metals.

In the present work, modified embedded atom potential and large-scale molecular dynamics’ simulations were used to explore the effect of grain boundary (GB) segregated foreign interstitials on the deformation behavior of nanocrystalline (nc) iron. As a case study, carbon and nitrogen (about 2.5 at.%) were added to (nc) iron. The tensile test results showed that, at the onset of plasticity, grain boundary sliding mediated was dominated, whereas both dislocations and twinning were prevailing deformation mechanisms at high strain. Adding C/N into GBs reduces the free excess volume and consequently increases resistance to GB sliding. In agreement with experiments, the flow stress increased due to the presence of carbon or nitrogen and carbon had the stronger impact. Additionally, the simulation results revealed that GB reduction and suppressing GBs’ dislocation were the primary cause for GB strengthening. Moreover, we also found that the stress required for both intragranular dislocation and twinning nucleation were strongly dependent on the solute type.

AbstractAn unexpected mode of plastic deformation was observed in damascene Cu interconnect test structure during an in-situ electromigration experiment and before the onset of visible microstructural damages (void, hillock formation). We show here, using a synchrotron technique of white beam X-ray microdiffraction, that the extent of this electromigration-induced plasticity is dependent on the line width. The grain texture of the line might also play an important role. In wide lines, plastic deformation manifests itself as grain bending and the formation of subgrain structures, while only grain rotation is observed in the narrower lines. This early stage behavior can have a direct bearing on the final failure stage of electromigration.
