To study the mesoscale damage evolution law of irregular sandstone particles, based on RFPA2D and digital image processing technology, a real mesostructure numerical model of irregular sandstone particles is established to simulate the breakage process of particles, the effects of loading conditions and mesoscale heterogeneity on irregular sandstone particle damage are studied, and the calculation method of fractal dimension of irregular rock particles mesoscale fracture is proposed. The results show that the fracture damage degree (ω) and fractal dimension (D) maximum values of the constrained particles are 0.733 and 1.466, respectively, and the unconstrained particles are 0.577 and 1.153, respectively. The final failure mode of constrained particles is more complicated than unconstrained particles, the damage is more serious, and the fracture is more complete. Thus, the larger values of D yield a more complicated final failure mode of the particles. Consequently, with the larger ω, the final damage is more serious, and the breakage effect is comparatively better. The study is of great significance for exploring the laws of rock particle breakage and energy consumption, rock breakage mechanism, and searching for efficient and energy-saving rock-breaking methods.

Abstract The gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires (NWs) in piezotronic applications are usually under cyclic loading, which thus may inevitably suffer the mechanical fatigue. In this paper, the fatigue behaviours of defective GaN NWs are investigated by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our results show no significant changes in the molecular structures of GaN NWs until their final failure during the fatigue process. The final fracture occurring in the GaN NWs under fatigue loading is triggered by the crack that unusually initiates from the NW surface. The GaN NW with a smaller defect concentration or under the fatigue load with a smaller amplitude is found to possess a longer fatigue life. In addition, the ultimate fatigue strain of GaN NWs can be significantly increased by reducing the defect concentration of NWs. The material parameters including elastic constants, piezoelectric coefficients, and dielectric constants of GaN NWs in the fatigue test are evaluated through MD simulations, all of which are found to keep almost unchanged during the fatigue process. These material parameters together with the band gaps of GaN NWs extracted from first-principles calculations are employed in finite element calculations to investigate the piezopotential properties of GaN NWs under fatigue loading. No significant changes are found in the piezopotential properties of GaN NWs during the fatigue process, which indicates the long-term dynamic reliability of GaN NWs in piezotronic applications.

The main focus of the present work was to study corn skin as reinforcement of polyester bio-composite (CSPCs). The effect of reinforcement type, i.e. short fibers and discontinuous chips, on the tensile properties was studied. The corn skin materials were chemically treated with NaOH and added as reinforcement of polyester bio-composite using the hand lay-up fabrication method. Tensile tests were carried out according to ASTM D3039. The tensile strength characteristics of stress and modulus showed a different behavior between the two types of reinforcement due to a slight difference in specimen thickness, which affected the calculated stress and modulus values. Furthermore, from a physical properties point of view, the larger surface area of CSC compared to CSF, which still contains a lignin layer after the treatment with NaOH, could decrease the interfacial bonding between polyester as the matrix and CSC as the reinforcement. The tensile damage characteristics showed brittle behavior, propagataing perpendicular to the loading direction. Matrix cracking and interfacial debonding were identified as the main two damage modes of the CSF bio-composite and the CSC bio-composite, where the final failure was dominated by fiber pull out and chip fracture.

This article explores an African American writer’s revision of a famous English poet Tennyson whose versified medieval portrait of the Arthurian legend appears in Idylls of the King as well as other poems. The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color Line (1899), a story collection by African American author Charles Chesnutt (1858–1932), addresses parameters contextualized in the aftermath of slavery such as esthetic notions of beauty tied to whiteness and intra-racial inequality. The final failure of two protagonists, a man and a woman, to fulfill their romantic aspirations of whiteness connects the collection’s titular story to “Cecily’s Dream.” In addition to the color-line theme, however, Chesnutt is motivated to refer to the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892), including moments in which chivalric codes of honor, whiteness and flawed courtly love are idealized. Tennyson’s parabolic poems provide Chesnutt’s intertextual scheme to engage the implied reader by renewing, transforming and also subverting the motif of courtly love in these Arthurian idylls.

This study concerns the influence of chemical corrosion and geometric parameters on the macroscopic damage characteristics of brittle limestone containing a kinked fissure under uniaxial compression. The specimens are prepared in chemical solutions with different NaCl concentrations and pH values. The acoustic emission (AE) technique is adopted to detect the inner distortion of the failure behaviour. The physical process of the crack coalescence of kinked fissures is synchronously captured by a high-speed camera. Seven failure patterns are identified based on the final failure mode and the failure process. Furthermore, the stress intensity factor of kinked cracks under chemical corrosion is obtained by a theoretical analysis. Chemical erosion with an acidic solution has a relatively strong effect on the compressive strength of the tested specimen, while the initial crack angle is not affected by short-term chemical corrosion.

The failure behavior of composites under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was investigated by acoustic emission (AE) testing and Ib-value analysis. AE signals were acquired from woven glass fiber/epoxy specimens tested under tensile load. Cracks initiated earlier in UV-irradiated specimens, with a higher crack growth rate in comparison to the pristine specimen. In the UV-degraded specimen, a serrated fracture surface appeared due to surface hardening and damaged interfaces. All specimens displayed a linearly decreasing trend in Ib-values with an increasing irradiation time, reaching the same value at final failure even when the starting values were different.

Direct shear tests were carried out on nonthrough jointed rock masses (NTJRM) with three types of joints under five normal stresses. The strength characteristics of shear strength, initial crack strength, and residual strength and the deformation characteristics of tangential displacement and dilatancy displacement as well as the transformation of failure mode and the variation of shear parameters of rock mass with different joint morphology are studied. Under the same normal stress, with the increase of joint undulation, the shear strength of NTJRM increases, and the corresponding tangential displacement of NTJRM increases. Two typical failure modes are observed: TTTS mode and TSSS mode. TTTS model indicates that the initial failure, extension failure, and final failure of rock mass are caused by tensile action, while the failure mode of through plane is formed by shear action. The initial failure of TSSS mode rock mass is caused by tensile action, while the expansion and final failure are caused by shear action, and the failure mode of through plane is formed under shear action. When the joint undulation is small and the normal stress is small, NTJRM will fail in TTTS mode; when the joint undulation is large and the normal stress is large, NTJRM will fail in TSSS mode. The results show that the shear parameters of NTJRM are related to the joint morphology, the bond force increases with the increase of joint undulation, and the internal friction angle increases with the increase of joint undulation. The research results of direct shear test of nonthrough jointed rock mass can provide reference for related research.

This article is part of the special cluster, “National, European, Transnational: Far-right activism in the 20th and 21st centuries”, guest edited by Agnieszka Pasieka. Bolesław Piasecki, the leader of the Polish National Radical Movement (RNR), was one of the influential far-right activists in the 1930s. This article examines his political leadership through the lens of Weberian charismatic authority, enhanced by the analytical Anthony Ammeter’s framework for the analyzing power dynamics of leadership. Through a close investigation of the development of his political career, the article shows—in contrast to much of the existing literature—that Piasecki’s power was forged through triangular interactions between his skills and influential personality, the expectations and needs of his associates, and as a result of a series of events in which he displayed the ability to wield political impact. This approach sheds light on the ways in which political leadership is reliant on a wider network of relationships and shows that Piasecki’s charismatic authority was to a large extent an image constructed by his closest associates. At the same time, it shows parallels and connections between the RNR and other European fascist movements. This approach enables us to define and specify more precisely the nature of the RNR, and dig deep into the complex dynamics lying behind the final failure of the movement and Piasecki’s leadership.

Understanding of fracture mechanics of the human knee structures within total knee replacement (TKR) allows a better decision support for bone fracture prevention. Numerous studies addressed these complex injuries involving the femur bones but the full macro-crack propagation from crack initiation to final failure and age-related effects on the tibia bone were not extensively studied. The present study aimed to develop a patient-specific model of the human tibia bone and the associated TKR implant, to study fatigue and fracture behaviors under physiological and pathological (i.e., age-related effect) conditions. Computed tomography (CT) data were used to develop a patient-specific computational model of the human tibia bone (cortical and cancellous) and associated implants. First, segmentation and 3D-reconstruction of the geometrical models of the tibia and implant were performed. Then, meshes were generated. The locations of crack initiation were identified using the clinical observation and the fatigue crack initiation model. Then, the propagation of the crack in the bone until final failure was investigated using the eXtended finite element method (X-FEM). Finally, the obtained outcomes were analyzed and evaluated to investigate the age-effects on the crack propagation behaviors of the bone. For fatigue crack initiation analysis, the stress amplitude–life S–N curve witnessed a decrease with increasing age. The maximal stress concentration caused by cyclic loading resulted in the weakening of the tibia bone under TKR. For fatigue crack propagation analysis, regarding simulation with the implant, the stress intensity factorand the energy release rate tended to decrease, as compared to the tibia model without the implant, from 0.152.5 to 0.111.9 (MPa) and from 10240 to 5133 (J), respectively. This led to the drop in crack propagation speed. This study provided, for the first time, a detailed view on the full crack path from crack initiation to final failure of the tibia bone within the TKR implant. The obtained outcomes also suggested that age (i.e., bone strength) also plays an important role in tibia crack and bone fracture. In perspective, patient-specific bone properties and dynamic loadings (e.g., during walking or running) are incorporated to provide objective and quantitative indicators for crack and fracture prevention, during daily activities.

To study the fracture characteristics and the permeability change law of the cracked specimens during the complete stress-strain process, a mechanical model was constructed, from which different types of crack initiation angles were obtained. The crack inclination angles under uniaxial compression, confining compression, and confining tension, and the influence of confining pressure and pore water pressure on the crack propagation and permeability of rock mass were investigated and simulated with RFPA-Flow software using prefabricated crack models with crack initiation angles of 30°, 45°, and 60°. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of inrush channel from floor was qualitatively analyzed. The results indicated that the theoretical initiation angles of wing cracks, secondary coplanar cracks, and secondary inclined antiwing cracks were found to be 70.53°, 0°, and 123.8°, which were consistent with the simulation results. The crack propagation was mainly concentrated at the postpeak stage of the complete stress-strain curve, causing the peak of seepage velocity to lag behind the stress peak. For the case with a constant confining pressure, the rate of crack initiation and propagation to final failure was positively correlated with the internal pore pressure. For the case with a constant water pressure, the speed of crack initiation and propagation to final failure decreased first and then increased as the confining pressure increased. In addition, the longitudinal propagation of wing cracks and the increase in permeability were prone to occur in the low confining pressure zone, which induced the formation of water inrush channels. The research result provides an improved understanding for predicting and preventing water inrush disasters.
