A direction of arrival (DOA) estimator for two-dimensional (2D) incoherently distributed (ID) sources is presented under proposed double cross arrays, satisfying both the small interval of parallel linear arrays and the aperture equalization in the elevation and azimuth dimensions. First, by virtue of a first-order Taylor expansion for array manifold vectors of parallel linear arrays, the received signal of arrays can be reconstructed by the products of generalized manifold matrices and extended signal vectors. Then, the rotating invariant relations concerning the nominal elevation and azimuth are derived. According to the rotating invariant relationships, the rotating operators are obtained through the subspace of the covariance matrix of the received vectors. Last, the angle matching approach and angular spreads are explored based on the Capon principle. The proposed method for estimating the DOA of 2D ID sources does not require a spectral search and prior knowledge of the angular power density function. The proposed DOA estimation has a significant advantage in terms of computational cost. Investigating the influence of experimental conditions and angular spreads on estimation, numerical simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has advantages in terms of estimation accuracy, with a similar number of sensors and the same experimental conditions when compared with existing methods, and that it shows a robustness in cases of model mismatch.

Distributed sources can be regarded as an assembly of point sources within a spatial distribution. In this paper, we explore the estimation of the two-dimensional incoherently distributed sources using double L-shape arrays. The rotational invariance properties of the nominal elevation and nominal elevation are firstly obtained by taking first-order Taylor series expansions with regard to the generalized steering vectors of two pairs of parallel subarrays. The rotation operators can be solved based on signal subspace. Then the nominal elevation and nominal elevation can be obtained from parameters matching method. Estimation of direction of arrival can be used in multi-source scenario and needn't peak-finding search. Lastly the angular spreads can be solved through two-dimensional Capon search based on nominal angles. The simulation experiments show that the proposed method has good performance on the estimation of two-dimensional incoherently distributed sources. Investigating different experimental conditions, sources with different angular spreads, simulations are conducted to validate better estimation accuracy of the proposed method.

Aiming at two-dimensional (2D) coherent distributed (CD) sources, this paper has proposed a direction of arrival (DOA) tracking algorithm based on signal subspace updating under the uniform rectangular array (URA). First, based on the hypothesis of small angular spreads of distributed sources, the rotating invariant relations of the signal subspace of the receive vector of URA are derived. An ESPRIT-like method is constructed for DOA estimation using two adjacent parallel linear arrays of URA. Through the synthesis of estimation by multiple groups of parallel linear arrays within URA arrays, the DOA estimation method for 2D CD sources based on URA is obtained. Then, fast approximated power iteration (FAPI) subspace tracking algorithm is used to update the signal subspace. In this way, DOA tracking of 2D CD sources can be realized by DOA estimation through signal subspace updating. This algorithm has a low computational complexity and good real-time tracking performance. In addition, the algorithm can track multiple CD sources without knowing the angular signal distribution functions, which is robust to model errors.

In order to reduce the loss of Degree of Freedom (DOF) brought by the transmit subarray splitting of two-dimensional hybrid phased-MIMO radar, this paper presents a design method of transmitting and receiving array based on nested array structure. Firstly, a two-dimensional hybrid phased-MIMO radar transmitting array based on one-dimensional nested array is presented. On this basis, the receiving end is set as a nested array, and finally a virtual array and difference coarray are formed to expand the number of virtual array elements. The expansion increases the DOF of arrays while preserving the advantages of hybrid phased-MIMO radars. Simulation experiments show that compared with the traditional and coprime hybrid phased-MIMO radar, the proposed method can effectively improve the array DOF and Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation accuracy.

An enhanced two-dimensional direction of arrival (2D-DOA) estimation algorithm for large spacing three-parallel uniform linear arrays (ULAs) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, we use the propagator method (PM) to get the highly accurate but ambiguous estimation of directional cosine. Then, we use the relationship between the directional cosine to eliminate the ambiguity. This algorithm not only can make use of the elements of the three-parallel ULAs but also can utilize the connection between directional cosine to improve the estimation accuracy. Besides, it has satisfied estimation performance when the elevation angle is between 70° and 90° and it can automatically pair the estimated azimuth and elevation angles. Furthermore, it has low complexity without using any eigen value decomposition (EVD) or singular value decompostion (SVD) to the covariance matrix. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

The two-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem for noncircular signals using quaternions is considered in this paper. In the framework of quaternions, we reconstruct the conjugate augmented output vector which reduces the dimension of covariance matrix. Compared with existing methods, the proposed one has two main advantages. Firstly, the estimation accuracy is higher since quaternions have stronger orthogonality. Secondly, the dimension of covariance matrix is reduced by half which decreases the computational complexity. Simulation results are presented verifying the efficacy of the algorithm.

We consider the problem of two-dimensional (2D) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for planar array, and propose a successive propagator method (PM)-based algorithm. The rotational invariance property of the propagator matrix is exploited to obtain the initial angle estimations, while the accurate estimates can be achieved through successive one-dimensional and local spectrum-peak searches. The proposed algorithm can obtain automatically paired 2D-DOA estimations, and it requires no eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix of received data, which remarkably reduces the computational cost compared with traditional 2D-PM algorithm. In addition, the DOA estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is better than estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT) algorithm and PM algorithm, and is close to 2D-PM algorithm which requires 2D spectrum-peak search. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and improvement of the proposed algorithm.

The problem of the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for the noncircular (NC) signals, which have been widely used in communications, is investigated. A reduced-dimension NC-Capon algorithm is proposed hereby for the DOA estimation of noncircular signals. The proposed algorithm, which only requires one-dimensional search, can avoid the high computational cost within the two-dimensional NC-Capon algorithm. The angle estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is much better than that of the conventional Capon algorithm and very close to that of the two-dimensional NC-Capon algorithm, which has a much higher complexity than the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can be applied to arbitrary arrays and works well without estimating the noncircular phases. The simulation results verify the effectiveness and improvement of the proposed algorithm.
