Respiratory rate (RR) is typically the first vital sign to change when a patient decompensates. Despite this, RR is often monitored infrequently and inaccurately. The Circadia Contactless Breathing Monitor™ (model C100) is a novel device that uses ultra-wideband radar to monitor RR continuously and un-obtrusively. Performance of the Circadia Monitor was assessed by direct comparison to manually scored reference data. Data were collected across a range of clinical and non-clinical settings, considering a broad range of user characteristics and use cases, in a total of 50 subjects. Bland–Altman analysis showed high agreement with the gold standard reference for all study data, and agreement fell within the predefined acceptance criteria of ±5 breaths per minute (BrPM). The 95% limits of agreement were −3.0 to 1.3 BrPM for a nonprobability sample of subjects while awake, −2.3 to 1.7 BrPM for a clinical sample of subjects while asleep, and −1.2 to 0.7 BrPM for a sample of healthy subjects while asleep. Accuracy rate, using an error margin of ±2 BrPM, was found to be 90% or higher. Results demonstrate that the Circadia Monitor can effectively and efficiently be used for accurate spot measurements and continuous bedside monitoring of RR in low acuity settings, such as the nursing home or hospital ward, or for remote patient monitoring.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that has a relation with respiratory system during sleep. One of the sleep apnea characteristic is suddenly stop breathing during sleep. People have the different of respiratory rate (RR) which is affected by sleep positions and body mass index (BMI).There are four sleep positions affecting the respiratory rate (RR). Polysomnography (PSG) is conventionally used to analysis the sleep apnea. This technique requires body contact that might be uncomfortable for the patient. In this study, the Xethru X4M200 radar sensor is proposed as non-contact tool to detect the RR by implementing the Doppler effect. Furthermore, the relation between RR with the sleep position and the BMI are discused. For that purpose, 20 participants (10 males and 10 females) with dierent BMIs and sleep positions are examined by monitoring their chest movement. This method is able to detect the indication of bradypnoea or tachypnoea. Futher systematic study and more participants are required to confirm our results and provide better non-contact technique for RR measurement.

Abstract. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a popular screening instrument for the detection of social-emotional and behavioral problems in children in community and clinical settings. To sensibly compare SDQ scores across these settings, the SDQ should measure psychosocial difficulties and strengths in the same way across community and clinical populations, that is, the SDQ should be measurement invariant across both populations. We examined whether measurement invariance of the parent version of the SDQ holds using data from a community sample (N = 707) and a clinical sample (N = 931). The results of our analysis suggest that measurement invariance of the SDQ parent version across community and clinical populations is tenable, implying that one can compare the SDQ scores of children across these populations. This is a favorable result since it is common clinical practice to interpret the scores of a clinical individual relative to norm scores that are based on community samples. The findings of this study support the continued use of the parent version of the SDQ in community and clinical settings.

Purpose: The use of technology (e.g., telehealth) in clinical settings has rapidly increased and its use in research settings continues to grow. The aim of this report is to provide detailed methods for conducting a multi-timepoint (test-retest) virtual paradigm, assessing lifestyle, physiological, cognitive, and linguistic factors in persons with and without aphasia. Methods: Procedures for virtual assessment are detailed in a sample of non-brain damaged adults (NB; N=24) and persons with aphasia (PWA; N=9) on a test-retest paradigm (data collection approximately 10 +/- 3 days apart). This report provides practical information about pre-assessment (e.g. recruitment, scheduling), assessment (e.g. aphasia-friendly consent presentation, investigator fidelity), and post-assessment (e.g. data storage, quality check) procedures for human behavior research using a virtual platform.Results: Preliminary study data is provided, demonstrating high retention rates and feasibility. Common technological troubles and solutions are discussed, and solutions offered. The results suggest that our pre-assessment, assessment, and post-assessment procedures were core to the success of our study. Conclusion: We provide practical methodology for conducting a multi-timepoint study, with considerations for persons with aphasia, adding to the body of research on telehealth in clinical populations. Future studies should continue to evaluate tele-methodology, which may be core for diversifying studies, improving study retention, and enrolling larger sample sizes.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to describe exposure to within-household and community adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and to identify child- and parent-level factors associated with exposure to different kinds of ACEs. This cross-sectional study used a clinical sample of 257 Black and Hispanic children ages 3–16 years and their caregivers who were seeking care at two federally qualified health centers in Chicago, Illinois and screened positive for a behavioral health problem. The sample had high levels of within-household ACEs (76% reported at least one) and community ACEs (71% reported at least one). Black children experienced more overall and within-household ACEs than Hispanic children, including forced separation from a caregiver and family member incarceration. Hispanic children experienced more bullying and violent media exposure. Significant associations to all categories of ACEs were observed for depression, child behavioral problems, and older child age. Tailored assessment of ACEs and interventions such as trauma-informed care are needed in pediatric clinical settings, including assessment of ACEs children in experience in communities.

AbstractDemographic changes and increasing air pollution entail that monitoring of respiratory parameters is in the focus of research. In this study, two customary inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used to measure the breathing rate by using quaternions. One IMU was located ventral, and one was located dorsal on the thorax with a belt. The relative angle between the quaternion of each IMU was calculated and compared to the respiratory frequency obtained by a spirometer, which was used as a reference. A frequency analysis of both signals showed that the obtained respiratory rates vary slightly (less than 0.2/min) between the two systems. The introduced belt can analyse the respiratory rate and can be used for surveillance tasks in clinical settings.
