The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of newly developed dental dual-energy (DE) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to compare both the voxel values in hard bone tissue of DE-CBCT and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) images, collected in a clinical trial conducted at Seoul National University Dental Hospital. A software implemented as a scripted module of a three-dimensional (3D) slicer was developed to register the volume data from the MDCT space to DE-CBCT, locate the same 3D regions of interest (ROIs) in each image space, and extract the statistics of the ROIs. The mean values were paired and used as representative values of the ROIs. A scatter plot with the line of equality and Bland–Altman (BA) plot of difference for a pair of measured means were used for statistical analysis. Of the ROI pairs, 96% were within ±15% from the identity line, and more than 95% of the measured ROI pairs were within the limits of agreement of the 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with the CI of the limits in BA plots. The newly developed dental DE-CBCT showed a level of voxel value accuracy similar to that of MDCT.

This paper proposes a fast GrowCut (FGC) algorithm and applies the new algorithm in three-dimensional (3D)kidney segmentation from computed tomography (CT) volume data. Users could mark the object of interest with different labels in CT slices.FGC propagates the labels using monotonically decreasing function and color features to derive an optimal cut for a given data in space. The color features play a great role in comparing with neighborhood cells. The experimental results clearly demonstrate the superiority of FGC in accuracy and speed.

Background Lymph nodes (LN) are examined in every computed tomography (CT) scan. Until now, an evaluation is only possible based on morphological criteria. With dual-energy CT (DECT) systems, iodine concentration (IC) can be measured which could conduct in an improved diagnostic evaluation of LNs. Purpose To define standard values for IC of cervical, axillary, and inguinal LNs in DECT. Material and Methods Imaging data of 297 patients who received a DECT scan of the neck, thorax, abdomen–pelvis, or a combination of those in a portal-venous phase were retrospectively collected from the institutional PACS. No present history of malignancy, inflammation, or trauma in the examined region was present. For each examined region, the data of 99 patients were used. The IC of the three largest LNs, the main artery, the main vein, and a local muscle of the examined area was measured, respectively. Results Normalization of the IC of LNs to the artery, vein, muscle, or a combination of those did not lead to a decreased value-range. The smallest range and confidence interval (CI) of IC was found when using absolute values of IC for each region. Hereby, mean values (95% CI) for IC of LN were found: 2.09 mg/mL (2.00–2.18 mg/mL) for neck, 1.24 mg/mL (1.16–1.33 mg/mL) for axilla, and 1.11 mg/mL (1.04–1.17 mg/mL) for groin. Conclusion The present study suggests standard values for IC of LNs in dual-layer CT could be used to differentiate between healthy and pathological lymph nodes, considering the used contrast injection protocol.

A total of 580 patients, who visited and received an orthodontic diagnosis in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 2017 to 2019, were investigated in this study. The aim of this study was to evaluate skeletal patterns of pediatric orthodontic patients determined with lateral cephalometric analysis and to analyze the relationship between skeletal pattern and probable associated clinical features. Also, the modality of orthodontic treatment for each skeletal classification was investigated to aid in therapeutic decisions.<br/>Patients aged 7 year accounted for the largest age group; 54.2% of patients showed a skeletal class I pattern, 22.2% showed a skeletal class II pattern, and 23.6% showed a skeletal class III pattern. Bi-maxillary retrusion for skeletal class I, retruded mandible with normal positioning of the maxilla for skeletal class II, and retrusion of the maxilla with protrusion of the mandible for skeletal class III were the largest subgroups by skeletal pattern. Brachyfacial type accounted for 55.0% of patients, followed by 31.9% of mesofacial type and 13.1% of dolichofacial type. The prevalence of anterior crossbite in the study was 43.3%, higher than that in previous studies.

BackgroundDown-sloping sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in people in their teens and 20s hampers efficient learning and communication and in-depth social interactions. Nonetheless, its aetiology remains largely unclear, with the exception of some potential causative genes, none of which stands out especially in people in their teens and 20s. Here, we examined the role and genotype–phenotype correlation of lipoxygenase homology domain 1 (LOXHD1) in down-sloping SNHL through a cohort study.MethodsBased on the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) genetic deafness cohort, in which the patients show varying degrees of deafness and different onset ages (n=1055), we have established the ‘SNUBH Teenager–Young Adult Down-sloping SNHL’ cohort (10–35 years old) (n=47), all of whom underwent exome sequencing. Three-dimensional molecular modelling, minigene splicing assay and short tandem repeat marker genotyping were performed, and medical records were reviewed.ResultsLOXHD1 accounted for 33.3% of all genetically diagnosed cases of down-sloping SNHL (n=18) and 12.8% of cases in the whole down-sloping SNHL cohort (n=47) of young adults. We identified a potential common founder allele, as well as an interesting genotype–phenotype correlation. We also showed that transcript 6 is necessary and probably sufficient for normal hearing.ConclusionsLOXHD1 exceeds other genes in its contribution to down-sloping SNHL in young adults, rising as a signature causative gene, and shows a potential but interesting genotype–phenotype correlation.
