Network analysis through the lens of traffic flows is becoming the focus of urban-region research in the context of globalization. This study examines the network relationship among 31 cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from the perspective of consumption flow that is serving as an increasingly important engine for China’s growth in general and regional momentum in particular. By tracing the directions and magnitudes of bank card transactions in 2016 as provided by Chinese UnionPay, this paper finds: (1) Three capital cities dominate both outward and inward flow networks and have net outflows, whereas others are featured with inward consumption flow; (2) Most interurban flows occur within provincial boundary, which leaves this whole region without a city-generating global impact; (3) Eight sub-networks composed of adjoining few cities can be further identified that have closer connections to the one containing capital city in that province. Based on these findings related to boundary effect, this paper concludes with a vision for more integrated consumption networks in the context of this region.

This article reflects on the unfinished task of liberation – as expressed in issues of land – and drawing from the work of Franz Fanon and the Durban-based social movement Abahlali baseMjondolo. It locates its reflections in four specific sites of struggle in the City of Tshwane, and against the backdrop of the mission statement of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria, as well as the Capital Cities Research Project based in the same university. Reflecting on the ‘living death’ of millions of landless people on the one hand, and the privatisation of liberation on the other, it argues that a liberating praxis of engagement remains a necessity in order to break the violent silences that perpetuate exclusion.

The 2014 hukou reform introduced by the Chinese central government was a turning point in China’s policies towards migration. Different from the previous hukou policies, which were largely exclusionary, the reformed policy encouraged migrants to permanently settle in their destination cities and make use of the public services available there. However, the actual results and consequences of this policy seem to vary between cities. This is due to the fact that Chinese municipal governments still have their own discretionary power when it comes to defining the criteria for accessing a local hukou. This raises the question of what the real impact of the hukou policy reform has been. This paper attempts to answer this question. It starts with a hukou access policy analysis of 20 different cities in the Yangtze River delta urban region. This analysis shows that the strictness of the local hukou access policy is related to city specific factors such as economic strength, share of migrant population, and population size. In the second part of the paper, we examine the impact of local hukou access policies on the intentions of migrants. Based on two logistic regression models, we find that the stricter the local hukou access policy is, the more willing migrants are to convert their current hukou into a local hukou. Furthermore, we observed that the settlement intention of migrants has a V-shaped rather than a linear relation with the strictness of local hukou access policies. Cities with relatively loose and cities with relatively strict hukou access policies are more desired as permanent settlement location than cities with moderately strict hukou access policies.

In this study, an empirical curve describing the relation between erosion and deposition rate and water/sediment discharge was developed based on the recent evolution trend of the submerged delta at the Yangtze River Mouth, and the one-dimensional mathematical model for unsteady water-and sediment-transport was calibrated using the water and sediment discharge data after water impounding to predict the water and sediment discharge for the future 10 years and the future evolution of the submerged delta at the Yangtze River Mouth. The results showed that the 10 m and 20 m isobaths areas of the submerged delta changed with the water and sediment discharge from siltation to siltation slowing down to erosion. Siltation increased with large amount of rain received by the watershed during 1997-2000, while continuous retreat of erosion happened during 2000-2009. Using the one-dimensional mathematical model for river water and sediment calibrated and tested with data collected after impounding, the water and sediment discharges were calculated for Series 60 and 90, and its evolution in 2013-2022 was predicted for the delta. For Series 60, its 10 cm and 20 cm isobaths areas showed alternative scour and siltation, while the delta showed trends of erosion. For Series 90, its 10 m and 20 m isobaths showed substantial siltation in flood years. The water and sediment discharges since the Three Gorges Reservoirs was filled were lower than the calculated results for both Series 60 and 90. If the water and sediment discharges continue to decease, the delta will take an erosion trend.

Exploring the coupling coordinated relationship between urbanization and eco-environment of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (UAMRYR) from 2000 to 2015 can provide a theoretical basis for the overall planning and healthy development of the region. Therefore, in this article, we took 31 cities of the UAMRYR as the research area, and established an evaluation system to calculate the urbanization level and eco-environmental quality. Then, using entropy method and coupling measurement model, we analyzed the coupling coordination relationship between urbanization level and eco-environmental quality from spatial and temporal perspectives. Temporally, the coupling degree (CD) and coupling coordinated degree (CCD) continually rose during the 16 years. Spatially, the coordinated development level of urbanization level and eco-environmental quality had significant spatial differences. The CD presented the “northwest-southeast” spatial characteristics corresponding to high-low distribution. The CCD showed an inverted Y-shaped spatial pattern that gradually decreases outward from the provincial capital city. The coordinated development level of urbanization and eco-environment in the UAMRYR showed a central-periphery spatial pattern, and had an obvious spatial variation.
