The management of waste, energy, and resources has received special attention from academics and practitioners due to the growing evidence for its effects on the environment. The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental drivers of waste, energy, and resource management and, in turn, its effect on the sustainable performance of manufacturing firms. The data were collected from a survey of 173 large manufacturing firms in Malaysia and analysed using partial least squares. The results indicate that although environmental regulatory pressure, customer pressure, environmental uncertainty, and expected business benefits have positive effects on the extent of waste, energy, and resource management, social responsibility has no effect. Furthermore, waste, energy, and resource management has a positive effect on the sustainable performance of large manufacturing firms. The findings of this study extend the knowledge of the drivers and outcomes of waste, energy, and resource management. The results can help policymakers to adjust policies and strategies in a way to inspire managers to implement waste, energy, and resource management.

SummaryThis paper analyzes empirically the effects of innovation on employment at the firm level using a uniquely long panel dataset of German manufacturing firms. The overall effect of innovations on employment often remains unclear in theoretical contributions due to reverse effects. We distinguish between product and process innovations and additionally introduce different innovation categories. We find clearly positive effects for product and process innovations on employment growth with the effects for process innovations being slightly higher. For product innovations that involved patent applications we can identify an additional positive effect on employment.

Sustainable organizational achievement of firms is the dominant approach in today’s world, with an inclination on improving profitability, social condition, and a healthy environment. Based on ability, motivation, opportunity (AMO), and stakeholder theories, this study explored the green human resource management (GHRM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) mechanism towards sustainable performance achievement. A structured questionnaire survey from 305 samples was appropriate for the quantitative study on this research. Moreover, widely used structural equation modeling and analysis of moment structures (AMOS) was used to analyze the proposed structural model of the study. Findings from the study added significance to all posited hypotheses and validated the study model. The current study added literature to the body of knowledge on green human resource management practices and corporate social responsibility in the pursuit of improved performance towards society, the environment, and sustainability of construction firms. For future studies, the inclusion of industries such as transportation-based industries and manufacturing companies that contribute to development should be considered for broad learning.

In recent years, the concepts of human resource management (HRM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have gained significant focus across industries. The role and implications of CSR are vital for organizational success; similarly, HRM plays a vital role in understanding, developing, and implementing CSR strategies. Therefore, we claimed that the nexus of HRM and CSR is worthwhile to study and relevant in the current pandemic situation. Despite recent calls about the role of human resource management (HRM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in achieving sustainable performance, a few studies have investigated their role combinedly in the hospitality industry, especially in a cross-cultural context. Therefore, the present study addresses the current lack of comparative research about the impact of HRM and CSR on sustainable performance in the hospitality industry of Pakistan, the UK, and Italy and shows the mediating role of HRM in such a relationship. A quantitative methodology is applied to the survey of the employees from 354 Pakistani, 438 British, and 520 Italian hotels working in three-, four-, and five-star hotels. The results showed a positive correlation between CSR, HRM, and sustainable performance. Moreover, the results also indicated significant differences among the three countries analyzed concerning the mediating role of HRM in this relationship.

Digitalization is a megatrend, but there is relatively little knowledge about its consequences for service work in general and specifically in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). We studied the impact of digitalization on psychological consequences for employees in tax consultancies as a special case of KIBS. We compare two tax consulting jobs with very different job demands, those of tax consultants (TCs) and assistant tax consultants (ATCs). The results show that the extent of digitalization at the workplace level for ATCs correlates significantly positively with their job satisfaction. For TCs, the same variable correlates positively with their work engagement. These positive effects of digitalization are mediated in the case of ATCs by the impact on important job characteristics. In the case of TCs, which already have very good working conditions, the impact is mediated by the positive effect on self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical consequences of these results are discussed.

The manufacturing sector is one of the major sources contributing towards economies as well as environmental pollution. Contributing to the theory of ability motivation opportunity theory, the aim of the current study was to investigate the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment on the relationship between green human resources management (green recruitment and selection, green training, green rewards, and green performance evaluation), corporate social responsibility, and sustainable performance (economic, social, and environmental performance). The quantitative survey research design was used in the current study and structured questionnaires were distributed for the collection of data. The cross-sectional data were collected from 150 firms. Sample of the study was consisted of HRM managers, directors. Total 200 questionnaires were distributed but 150 completed responses were received and analyzed. A structured questionnaire was used. For data analysis, smart partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used. The measurement model and the structural model were developed and tested in the study. The measurement model aim was to investigate and establish reliabilities and validities of the instrument while to test hypotheses structural model was formulated/developed. Results revealed that the instrument was found reliable and valid; the instrument has met all standard criteria for average variance extracted, composite/construct reliability factor loadings, and alpha values. While structural models illustrated that all hypotheses are accepted. It is concluded from the results that organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment significantly mediated the relationship between corporate social responsibility and green human resource management practices. This implies that organizational citizenship behavior towards environment significantly effects sustainable performance. The originality of the current study lies in highlighting corporate social responsibility, green human resources management practices to enhance sustainable performance through organizational citizenship behavior towards environment.

Profitability is used as a prime indicator to measure the sustainable performance of an organization. The current study made an attempt to apply the DuPont model to investigate the multilevel profitability determinants for the pharmaceutical industry of India. The study also estimates an empirical model to predict the association of profitability with factors such as profit margin, asset utilization, leverage, interest load and tax load of firms in the pharmaceutical industry of India. For this purpose, a dataset for 170 companies from 2010–2011 to 2018–2019 was analysed initially by using panel data regression followed by stepwise panel data regression. The study successfully applied and tested the DuPont model with respect to the firms of the pharmaceutical industry in India. It was found that the factors such as profit margin, asset utilization and leverage had a significant positive effect on the firms’ profitability and the factor interest load had a significant negative effect on the firms’ profitability. The tax load does not have an impact on the profitability of the pharmaceutical firms in India. These findings are expected to provide a guide for understanding the profitability of the firms in a better way.

In today’s increasingly competitive coffee industry, the point of running a good coffee shop is no longer to run a coffee and beverage shop simply, but to focus on the quality of service and the value that customers feel as a result. Previous studies have mainly discussed the customer satisfaction and behavioral intention of restaurants, while few studies have explored the influencing factors of customer satisfaction and behavioral intention of chain coffee shops. Given that the perceived service quality theory and DINESERV model can effectively predict customer satisfaction and behavioral intention, this study took 385 consumers in the first Starbucks Reserve flagship store in China as survey objects. SmartPLS 3.0 software was used to explore the relationship among respondents’ perceived service quality, customer perceived value, satisfaction, and behavioral intention. The results show that service quality has a partially significant positive effect on perceived value. Perceived service quality and customers’ perceived value both have significant positive effects on satisfaction. Customers’ satisfaction has a significant positive effect on their behavioral intention. These results indicate that enterprises should strengthen the emotional bond between consumers and enterprises and improve the reliability, assurance, and empathy of perceived service quality to create a better emotional resonance between consumers and the Starbucks brand to improve customer satisfaction. At the same time, it should also promote the symbolic perceived value of Chinese consumers to Starbucks to realize the sustainable development of coffee-shop operation and consumer repurchase. This study expands the research on the service quality, perceived value, and behavioral intention of coffee chain enterprises in the context of non-habitual coffee-drinking countries. Moreover, it provides case support for the operation and research of regional cultural consumption habits of international catering chain enterprises.

This study focuses on the effects of megaproject social responsibility (MSR) on participating organizations’ performance. Using a survey of the participating organizations in Chinese megaprojects, this study reveals that the impact of MSR on a participant’s performance goes beyond the scope of the current megaproject. The empirical results indicate that MSR positively affects both financial and social performance of the participating organizations. The interactions of primary stakeholders weaken the positive effects of MSR on both financial and social performance, whereas the interactions of secondary stakeholders strengthen the positive effects of MSR on social performance.
