The understanding of the beach capability to resist and recover from a disturbance is of paramount importance in coastal engineering. However, few efforts have been devoted to quantifying beach resilience. The present work aims to investigate the shoreline resistance and resilience, associated to a transient disturbance, on a sandy beach. A temporary groin was deployed for 24 h on a micro-tidal sea-breeze dominated beach to induce a shoreline perturbation. Morphological changes were measured by means of beach surveys to estimate the beach perturbation and the further beach recovery after structure removal. An Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the shoreline position suggests that the first EOF mode describes the spatial-temporal evolution of the shoreline owing to the groin deployment/removal. A new one-line numerical model of beach evolution is calibrated with the field surveys, reproducing both the sediment impoundment and subsequent beach recovery after the structure removal. Thus, a parametric numerical study is conducted to quantify resistance and resilience. Numerical results suggest that beach resistance associated to the presence of a structure decreases with increasing alongshore sediment transport potential, whereas resilience after structure removal is positively correlated with the alongshore diffusivity.

The work presents the results of a field and numerical study aimed to investigate the resistance and resilience, associated to an artificial shoreline perturbation, on a sandy beach. A temporary groin was deployed on a micro-tidal sea-breeze dominated beach to induce a shoreline perturbation. Wave conditions during the field experiment were highly correlated with sea breeze wind events, inducing a persistent alongshore sediment transport. A new one-line numerical model of beach evolution was calibrated and verified with the field surveys, reproducing both the sediment impoundment and subsequent beach recovery after the groin removal. Thus, the numerical model was able to simulate the mechanisms controlling the growth and decay caused by an artificial perturbation.

To validate an existing finite volume computational method, featuring a novel scheme to capture the temporal evolution of the free surface, fluid motions in partially filled tanks were simulated. The purpose was to compare computational and experimental results for test cases where measurements were available. Investigations comprised sloshing in a rectangular tank with a baffle at 60% filling level and in a cylindrical tank at 50% filling level. The numerical study started with examining effects of systematic grid refinement and concluded with examining effects of three-dimensionality and effects of variation of excitation period and amplitude. Predicted time traces of pressures and forces compared favorably with measurements.

The overwintering modes of E. necator were studied on Palestinian vineyards, through observations on the differentiation and maturation of cleistothecia and on the occurrence of flag-shoots (deriving from overwintering mycelium) in vineyards. Field surveys were carried out in 17 vineyards for the presence of Flag shoots and cleistothecia, both forms were not observed. Genetic structure and composition of E. necator populations were investigated by application of already available SCAR (Sequence Characterized Amplified Region) primers specific for the "flag-shoot" and "ascospore" biotypes. These primers were used to evaluate the dynamics of the spatial and temporal distribution of the two biotypes, into fungal populations present in 8 vineyards, with different cultivars and spray histories, in various Palestinian districts (Hebron, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Jericho, Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarm). 397 samples were analyzed by the uses of the primer pairs UnE-UnF in PCR reactions. All samples were found to be of the ascospore biotypes. This finding shows that the “flag shoot” biotype, appears soon after bud breaking and disappears later, while the “ascospore” biotype is more frequently associated to later infections and bunches damages. Such information would be helpful to understand the reasons underlying possible temporal evolution of the pathogen's populations in vineyards, and can have important implications for powdery mildew rationale control strategies.

The Riva River is located on the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul by the Black Sea coast, with a wonderful sandy beach and delta formation which has been selected as the study area. The Riva is the largest river in this region, which flows into the Black Sea and also gives its’ name to the area. The river carries some amount of sediments to the Black Sea. These particles cause considerable changes not only in the bed bathymetry and coastal boundaries of the river but also along the coastline of the Black Sea. The aim of this study is to determine these variations by means of satellite data and GIS. In the study, satellite images dated 1975, 1984, 1992 and 2001 have been used. At the end of the study, the possibility of observing bathymetric changes in front of the coastline by means of satellite data has been investigated and results were evaluated and visualised by means of GIS.

AbstractA renowned local wind in Japan, “Hijikawa-Arashi,” is a thermally driven nocturnal gap wind accompanied by fog. The wind is visually identified by the fog along the valley of the Hijikawa River between the Ozu basin and the Seto Inland Sea during the early morning in autumn and winter. A fine-resolution numerical model is employed to reproduce the main observed features of Hijikawa-Arashi. A vertical resolution of 10 m or less at the lowest level is required to express the nocturnal radiative cooling of the land that is required for fog formation in the basin, and fine horizontal resolution is necessary to express a realistic valley through which the fog is advected to the sea. Multiple hydraulic jumps accompanied by supercritical flow occur because of the complex topography. Both moisture transport by the sea breeze during the daytime and evaporation from the land surface are important for accumulating moisture to produce the fog.
